Quarterback heavy combine and of course is pretty exciting for the scouts and also very excited to our our scouting recruiter contributor Ty Turner. Welcome back to the sports cast. Good to go a lot of a lot of speculation this week with who’s going where things are keep changing it but the but the combine you DC you DC you DC some shifts a little bit what’s happening so far.

Just to clarify, it’s not over. No, it’s not the weakest. Yep. Yeah, there’s still three more days. Today is running backs and I want to say that running backs it up. It’s right back in offensive lineman. And then tomorrow is defensive lineman linebackers and in the final day is the back. So we still got three more days. I think kind of the headliner was yesterday. People like quarterbacks, let’s be honest, and people like why fast wide receivers. So and it’s a great wide receiver draft. So very big. I just say last night, first day, headliners quarterback wide receivers, and I think it got a lot of airtime. Got a lot of social media buzz going so yeah, I thought it went pretty well. As far as juice, let me go through and break down kind of how people are Formed or what do you want me to do with it? Let’s go

Let’s go with Justin Herbert. Let’s get your favorite quarterback. How’s he doing so far? I mean obviously had a good January in December, but I’ve been hearing from your comments not the best week but let’s see what you say so far.
Tyler Turner
hasn’t had the best week. I don’t think that’s accurate. Um, he had a pretty good day yesterday. He I think he ran the third fastest 40 time he pretty much had like tested he was I mean, it’s arguable he third, third and the third best 48 468 second best vertical at 35.5. He had the third best broad second best vertical corrective correction, third best broad jump at 10 three and he had the Best three cone drill at 7.03. So it is it could be argued he tested best of anyone I did Jalen hurts tested very well. Stephen Montez tested pretty well, but Herbert tested extremely well, especially for a guy that six six to 35 He also veloce ball velocity his 60 mile per hour ball velocity with second only to Jacob Beatson. So that’s our second best arm arguably one of the fastest one of the best overall explosive testing. I mean, pretty good. And then if you just go by the drills, how he performed, he was he had I would say probably performed about seven people accuracy. He threw a very accurate deep ball. He was a little bit ragged at the beginning and some of the stop routes. But then he was pretty accurate when it came to a slant is pretty accurate when it came to post. I think he was Bathroom they did the Phaedra I thought he’s the only quarterback to actually gave the receivers a good chance. It were you referring to the interviews? Possibly.

Yeah. Well I remember you got to get with someone’s given like takes at the moment that’s not it’s more of a it’s more of a micro aspect of something instead of the macro. So the macro of the combine, in regards to Justin Herbert is pretty good of the takeaways are yet he as athletic castine He is one of the best. He has drill testing. He was one of the best. It The only thing was the interviews he had picked apart by some of the analysts. Some of the analysts don’t like Justin Herbert. Especially if it’s more of the kind of just color commentators I’m talking about, like the Emmanuel ARCHOS Dan on the chesky those kind of guys are not very high at herber. Now when it comes to the scouting community well I don’t know this scout down straight scouts that scout like the analysts that are close to the scout so I’m talking about like, Daniel Jeremiah NFL Network, Dan burglar of the athletic Todd mcshea Mel Kiper of ESPN. There. They’re more. There’s definitely some questions. But then they are also are like, I mean, he has what he has, he has the probably the best talent, probably the best overall talent at any quarterback. But what are the what are the? Well, the concerns are when it comes to his consistencies. And I agree with those. That’s what I’d be a concern for myself. He’s just inconsistent, inconsistent play. And then there’s also some concerns about Is he a leader, is he really introverted? Is he to himself? does he lack confidence, some of That and then you could boil some of the inconsistencies to well, you seem sometimes inconsistent, because possibly he lacks confidence. He sometimes seems to not trust himself so he doesn’t let the ball go so it takes x. So it could all be a national one. So the concerns are to do with its consistency, possible lack of confidence, possibly not being a very vocal leader being more introverted. Those are the concerns. But that being said, I would be pretty shocked if Justin Herbert does not land in the top 10 to 15. And he’ll be one of the first four quarterbacks where do you quarterback Jake?

I mean, what I like about him is he’s a good athlete. He tests as well. He tested probably. I’m talking about comparatively across the board probably second best to erver he’s also has all the measurables six with three and a half big hands on his tape shows a guy that has the ability to improvise very well. He did not play with great talent. He made big plays against good teams. He played really good against Michigan State I saw that game. What you might not like about him is that he throws a lot interception he threw like eight interceptions his junior year. lot there’s like about him and and He’s an intriguing talent. He reminds some of Patrick mahomes. Well, Patrick mahomes won the NFL MVP in 2018. And in 2019, he won Super Bowl glad to be so to be compared to him is a really good thing. So I think the buzz around him is he’s just a guy that is really good talent and he can make some plays and he has the ability to improvise. And he’s kind of that new wave quarterback who you know, when stuff breaks down, he makes things happen. So yeah, there’s a blood going applause and I think it’s enough that I think he’s gonna go the

top 10 Steve Montana’s Colorado quarterback, he wasn’t very impressive this week. What were your thoughts about his performance?
Tyler Turner
His before was good. And, and he he’s a good athlete, and he had a great arm and he was very good. He was very prepared, but I think the tape is just, you know, he’s too inconsistent. Like, I’ve talked about her being inconsistent or Herbert Kip Scylla. are 27 and eight one a PAC 12 Title One a Rose Bowl MVP so his his consistency was pretty successful launches is it consistent was like it seemed didn’t make a whole game last two years. So I don’t know that’s kind of hard to overcome as much as it helped himself maybe get drafted

Really? Really there’s no other employ in that. That’s crazy. Um yeah that’s not good. And he’s not a very good athlete. Members of 40 when it comes to the quarterback is not the end all be all because if it was Jalen hurts the quarterback drafted or second is the second. But I mean freedom is who he is. He’s a skilled quarterback. He’s a Good leader I heard he interviewed very well. He’s not very athletic. He does not have a great arm he he you know you saw when he started throwing the long balls and in the passenger lt is he does not have the zip that like an Easterner Herbert has. I think from is a guy that’s looking at being a day three pack. I wouldn’t pick him before then there is some people will take he’s to go into day two. I don’t think taking the day to either hurt from maybe Anthony Gordon or guys that could be badly now in the third fourth round to be back.

I can round No, I don’t think so. I wouldn’t I just don’t think he’s, I don’t think he’s a future starter. I mean, maybe a guy that fills in I think he’s a guy that will play in the league. I think he’ll be a solid backup. I think he’s a last athletic versions and like a Colt McCoy. And before this already, you’re too so I mean, is that a solid backup? I just yeah, I never logged from and then just seeing how he tested just how not athletic he is. And he’s not a big guy. And he doesn’t have a great arm. Yes. I think he’s a third fourth round guy. That’s my vision.

And Jalen hurts the second fastest quarterback of yesterday. Not surprising ran for 4.59 for the 40 yard dash. What What do you think are his prospects

I mean, he played well and and and I heard was it I was just listening to a podcast actually about it and they said yeah you know if you look at it he he obviously tested Well, all the athletic drills, maybe the best athlete at quarterback position. I mean he still is strong and and you know he was really prepared when it came to the passing and he was accurate it is on the money and he through pretty much every past he was pretty pretty consistent. And you know, he’s a great leader no one questions that the thing is they said that you just you know, when you go the game film and it didn’t ability sometimes to go through progression, inability to read defenses really successfully. It just kind of there. And he’s a guy that maybe in the third, third or fourth round, when you’re saying hey, I want this guy that just you know that leader, he could be a backup the Toronto starter, give him a chance and franchise of looks at it that way, is kind of where he’s going to go. Don’t think from what I hear what I gather he will go be any earlier than third or fourth round I think it’d be dead

let’s into get into wide receivers Henry rugs the third highly anticipated 40 yard dash blaze two, two and 4.27 not breaking the john Ross record tie which was the thing about race performance.

I mean, I knew is gonna be fast. I guess the only question was was he gonna break it? And he did? No, no, no still doubt he ended up getting hurt though. I believe he got hurt running. He actually did not even perform and in the drill.

During the wide receiver class, it’s honestly it’s just really good this year. You know, every year like last year his defensive lineman it was edge rushers, you know, it’s just a great year for that some years. Well, this year is pretty good quarterback. I say this quarterback, the wide receivers and I think that’s why even yesterday was the main day because when it comes down to it, I think in the first round, you could have four or five quarterbacks get drafted. And you could have five six wide receivers so they’re having a third of the draft be those two positions. And it’s a great year it’s a great year for wide receivers you know, CD lamb is who he is ran a four four, made some terrific catches, especially on that stayed route. Jerry Judy ran Well, you know, once again, just a great route runner, George Jefferson, a guy who’s just, you know, a terrific route runner a great great hands. Many people didn’t think he’s gonna run as well. He ran a 443 I think he’s solidified himself in the first round. Jalen Rhaegar. A great athlete, you know, can do a lot offers a lot of our special teams and receiving I think he could go into personnel Kj hammered and run but he’s a possible first round, Brandon. I you, Pac 12. Guy. super talented. Late first round second round pick. Michael Pittman ran Well, obviously a good drill, second round guy. I mean, I could go on and on. I love them. Denzel Mims from Baylor. I think he’s a second round guy. kJ Hill and Austin Mac. very experienced guys will Ohio State great route runners maybe not quite as athletic, but they’re probably third round guys. I mean, in the first three rounds, you could have 1314 wide receivers. I didn’t even chase Claypool, a guy you could play wide receiver or tight end absolutely blaze or one guy 4.4 Yeah, just and he’s a guy that could play either position. I think he’s a possible first round guy, second round guy for sure. So you just have a lot of real good option. So if you’re like a Packer fan, Packers need wide receivers. I would maybe take two in the, you know, just your first two pics take wide receivers. It’s really good for that. So you get a year that you can possibly get a guy that could in the second or third round that another year might have gone first round, because there’s like, you’re going to get good value because there’s just so many. And not every team needs that many receivers. You could have a guy that some years would have gone higher, drop the second round. Use your first two picks on a wide receivers, use a very blazing fast slot guy and then do like an outside guy. Do a guy that’s versatile that can play tight end wide receiver. If I was if I was Green Bay, hey hack draft, TJ Hamlin, the first round of chase Claypool, the second round draft chase played well in the first round, maybe draft Brendan I you can the second round. So, you know, I just think you got a great draft that comes to wide receiver value and I yeah, I could see, you know, six or seven going in the first round. I could see four gold in the top 15. So it’s process what group is is right now going into the draft?

Would you say that this is a better quarterback class than, than the 2018? class?
Tyler Turner
Oh, I mean 2018 they hyped up so much. Um, I think there’ll be as many so I think for going to top 10 that year for within the top 11 five within the first round. I think Ford on the top 10 maybe five in the first round. I think the wild card is Jacob Beason. He has the big arm. That’s applause he has a size at the plus he’s not a great athlete. That’s a negative and he did not interview well. I guess there I did not know this but there’s some character concerns. He was known to not take football very seriously when he was at Georgia or the reason why he lost the job to Jake Fromm. I already was not exactly a plus lead. Early partying and stuff like that. So I could maybe see a son not end up going in the first round. If he does, it’ll probably be late to someone like the Titan. So your question, is it better than 2018? Well, if you don’t get five in the first round, and it’s basically the same, it’s probably follow little shorts. Um, is a good question. Ah. Because then at the time, like, bro and two, I think are better than may feel that Donald the top two bags, and Josh Allen Oh, I think I think we had a pretty good been a pretty good for all. I mean, so and then you have Lamar Jackson who won the league MVP. Yeah. And he got you have the number 32 pick. He will. Yeah, number 32 pack is maybe maybe the best quarterback, always tactical, football. And then Josh Allen. I believe it’s verbal or what I mean. He was very good that he realized he was well he could season so but Mayfield Baker Mayfield and Donald have not been maybe as good as they advertise. I don’t know it’s close if you like if we draft five the best is Harvard and Harvard Law. I don’t know it

Well, that’s stupid. I mean, the guy’s been there one year, even two years. You can’t say Josh rose. It hasn’t panned out. Like let’s say he does another 12. I mean, the dolphins are gonna draft a quarterback. Rosen might be on a third team. But after about three years if a guy hasn’t shown it very much improvement, he’s basically was drafted in the top 10. And it looks like he’s only going to be at best a part time starter, more of like a backup kind of guy. Yes. I would say he hasn’t panned out. There is Josh Rosen trend in the right direction. No, he’s not. No, he’s not. It is Dwayne Haskins. I don’t think you could even say that yet. He started as a as a rookie. I mean, he started on a bad team. That’s not his fault. So I would so I would say Rosen, not looking great for give him another year to Dwayne Haskins. I literally say you cannot say it’s too early

well he’d go or maybe he drives the Giants get him yeah I mean cuz there’s I mean okay so let’s say I’m just being devil’s advocate here let’s say you get um so you draft first borough goes to Bengals second you draft to to Redskins and at that point did did the lions go with young but do the lions draft quarterback do the dolphins trade up with the lions to get Justin Herbert and then all the sudden you have chargers drafting up to get love. I mean, I heard that people say that there’s possible three quarterbacks go one, two and three. And the more I see it trending, and yeah, I mean quarterbacks just gets the most value good. Is there a possibility that you see three quarterbacks goal in the top three? I mean, I think there is a possibility yet

Yeah, and I think some people are saying that the lions like you know, Mac first came out and really supporting Stafford so that might have put an end to it a little bit, but we’ll see. And then another thing to watch is will the lions maybe trade with like the dolphins will the lions maybe trade with the Panthers? I just think there’s gonna be some jockeying around. I’m just pretty convinced that four quarterbacks in the end goal in the top 10 and I think The four will be borough to Herbert and love is the order I would predict as of today. If I had to pick as of today I think borough goes first to ago second I think love those third and then I think Herbert go for but that could change

I don’t know why it said I just I don’t know I just seems like the one guy who who everyone team that’s really, really cooling on two of all of them is determined from what I hear. Are they just throwing out smoke screens? It makes me wonder if it’s it could be they could be bluffing. You know? Yeah, I mean, I couldn’t like everyone else’s fine but the team that everyone was like taken for to take it for to I mean, I thought like they would trade away their franchise for two of them. Wow, I heard about it all. off season and now all of a sudden the dolphins are the one team that’s like not like just a Berber bar I don’t know see but basically changed then and then there’s and then you got the Panthers who I know really like bro because of Joe Brady. I don’t know yet you’re getting a lot of crap out there but I am going to stick with what I kind of like, you know I was really predicting for a long time three quarterbacks in the top five. And now I’m just gonna, you know I’m just gonna lay down and I’m just like, there’s gonna be four quarterbacks in the top 10 I’m not gonna say three in the top five not gonna say three top four picks or quarterbacks. I’m not gonna say top three quarterbacks. But I think when all of a sudden done of the top 10 players drafted for will be quarterback. I feel pretty. I feel pretty. I feel that’s gonna happen.

you know He did pretty well. He ran while he ran a 458. And you know, he’s a guy 640 34 six or a guy that size. He might be a tight end candidate. He’s a guy that if he put on another 10 pounds, you know, six, four to 40 he’s actually a very good blocking tight end. That sorry, blocking wide receiver. He never played that. He was a he blocked very well, for a lot for a wide receiver. There is a chance that he could play tight end. I think he may be a late round guy. I could also indicate that this is a pretty good wide receiver class because, you know, I don’t know, I could pick games where he doesn’t get drafted. And then Jake breeland are tied in Yeah. Was. Yeah. And he was unable to, to really participated in a drill and I, I wouldn’t be shocked if he ends up getting drafted, which is unfortunate because you’re probably going to be at all American until I heard it and he probably should have been all American one likely would have been a mental around tech but after the injury happened you know I don’t know if it gets drafted I just want to kind of talk to you guys which is unfortunate really thoughts here oh

No it kind of like the how Jeffrey photo. I think he’s a top five for sure. Top 10 tech quarterbacks while staying. I’m kinda interested, what he runs. And you have to say only about participating and I’m trying to think of another square that I might be, you know, drop, do the running backs run. What is the honors with what is JK Dobbins Jonathan Taylor. From LSU What do they run and Why minutes not very eventful when it comes off as linemen defensive lineman there’s not really any big time to think of a pass for pass me a Derek brown the tackle I think he will go probably in the top 1015 cJ Henderson, the guy from Florida, how much can he improve his draft stock? He’s a first round guy. Yeah, that’s about it. Honestly, the best day was the first I was wanting to see the wide receivers run and see if I could beat it and see how they all look. And then the quarterbacks the barber performance stuff. So yeah, definitely much the first day was about Yeah,

obviously, just what what Ty was taking tomorrow you’re able to see the linemen. defensive linemen in linebacker and defensive back will be on Sunday and can watch it all on the NFL Network. It’s kind of reminds you of the Olympic Trials a little bit but it’s a little bit more exciting. But definitely fall. Yeah. And, of course, you know, Devon, you know, hearing different reports on different players opinions of a Herbert, you know, and one positive thing about Herbert is that from a lot of quarterbacks, he never had like a quarterback coach in high school or something. I’ve never had a quarterback consultant. So he’s always been a zone and that’s why he’s So I don because of his talent.

Yeah, I mean, remember he was you know, like when he came up high school, he was three star he was he did not get our five offer until he got it midway through me here from Oregon. He was really under the radar kid, actually, I remember. Remember when he was in high school and when he got recruited, he was kind of given an offer out of nowhere that he would pat myself back on play. I’m like, man, he seems a little underrated. He’s awful athletic, and has such a good arm for a guy that he thought middle the last three stars and you know he’s going to be a top 10 tech so I think he was underrated. I mean, that should have been a lifetime. So and and I would not, some people seem to be a little bit prize elite media is like, Wow, he ran really well, you know, jumped? Well, I wasn’t surprised. I mean, you could see. I mean, when he got out in front of people in college, it couldn’t catch him. So I assumed, you know, you’re playing against guys that can run pretty well. You’re probably running about a four, six. And he did. So I was actually surprised by how he tested. I thought he was going to be one of the most athletic and, and he’s obviously six foot six and a half. That’s a good guy. And he weighs two weighs just up to 40. And he’s skinny. I mean, if he actually put on some, like, more bulk, he could get up to 50 to 55. He could play tied me. I mean, he’s a good enough athlete. So yeah. I think he could only get better. The only thing that I question about Herbert and I think other people do is there is an I watched more Justin Herbert than pretty much Most people watch what is it? 35 straight games of his. He can be inconsistent. And I is that just who he is? is it just an instinctive thing? Is it just kind of a part? I mean, I don’t know.

I don’t think it’s an interesting person. I don’t think he’s an inconsistent person. I mean, he’s a high character person. But you know, it just does things get like, it could be you. Okay, so this is such a weird. I mean, you ever played sports?

I played soccer in high school a little bit, but you played it way more than I did.

Yeah. But sports is so weird because the little like a little thing that throws someone off. If you get to a higher level can be magnified. So let’s just say and I’m just as a hypothetical, let’s say that Justin Herbert is a perfectionist. I’m coming to reason why I’m picking perfectionist is because he’s a 4.1 student, someone who does that well. school might tend to be perfectionist. Let’s say he all of a sudden something breaks down. Like a guy doesn’t run the right route, right? And he then throws the ball and it gets incomplete. All of a sudden it gets to him. And he starts thinking about that. He’s like, oh, my goodness, why did he run the wrong route? Why did he run the mile run, then play 40 seconds later, they give the play and all of a sudden, you just pass rush and he just like he thinking about that play about how he he the guy was ran the wrong route, and then all of a sudden he gets sack, and then then the play 40 seconds later, and then all of a sudden, there’s no one open and he throws it and gets intercepted. Do you see that? That little mental block of a player running the wrong route, all of a sudden led to three bad plays. Yeah. And the reason why I go with the perfectionist is someone that gets 4.1 grade in biology clearly is someone that probably takes things very seriously.
