Tiger shoots 1-over at Genesis Invitational

Posted on February 16, 2024February 16, 2024 by Santiago Leon

During the 2024 Genesis Invitational, Patrick Cantlay shone in the round preceding Tiger Woods’ debut, leading with a score of 7-under 64 after opening with three birdies in four holes. His performance briefly faced a setback due to a sycamore tree but remained strong. Jason Day, Luke List (both scoring 65 without bogeys), and Cam Davis, who finished strongly with birdies in three of his last five holes, closely followed Cantlay.

Jordan Spieth also started well, matching Cantlay’s early pace but ended with a 66. Despite a smaller field of 70 players, the event was filled with memorable moments, including Woods’ unexpected shank on the 18th and his recovery, albeit finishing with a 72 after mentioning back spasms. Justin Thomas and Sam Burns had notable recoveries, while Rory McIlroy’s potential climb was thwarted by a difficult back nine, leading to a score of 74.

Cantlay and Spieth set the early pace, with Cantlay notably overcoming a difficult position on the 16th to limit his losses. The tournament also saw references to past local winners Max Homa and John Merrick, highlighting the significance of Southern California natives winning at Riviera.

Woods, now the tournament host, expressed concern over his back affecting his play, indicative of the competitive rust after his absence from official PGA Tour events since the Masters due to surgery. The event also noted the introduction of a 36-hole cut for the top 50 and ties, plus anyone within 10 shots of the lead, a rule favoring Woods’ preference.

McIlroy’s chance at reclaiming the world No. 1 spot was jeopardized by his performance, whereas Scottie Scheffler, the current No. 1, remained in contention despite putting challenges, finishing with a 68. The narrative encapsulates a day of high performance, surprising setbacks, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in the face of adversity.
