Tampa Bay Rays owner Stuart Sternberg announced Thursday the club won’t proceed with its proposed plan for a new ballpark.
“After careful deliberation, we have concluded we cannot move forward with the new ballpark and development project at this moment. A series of events beginning in October that no one could have anticipated led to this difficult decision,” Sternberg said in a statement.
In December, both the Pinellas County Commission and St. Petersburg City Council voted in favor of helping to finance a $1.3-billion ballpark to keep the Rays in the Tampa Bay area for another 30 years.
