Major League Soccer (MLS) is exploring significant changes to its calendar and competition format, including a possible shift to the international (fall-to-spring) calendar and revamped playoffs. However, no decisions have been made, and any changes will not take effect before the 2027 season.
At a recent owners’ meeting, all 30 teams gave input, but no vote occurred. Commissioner Don Garber called the discussions among the most important in league history, noting unresolved concerns like commercial impact, player feedback, and stadium logistics. LAFC owner Larry Berg expressed optimism but acknowledged the need for further evaluation.
While the 2026 World Cup presents a potential opportunity for promotion, MLS leaders clarified it was never a deadline for change. Further discussions with partners, players, and stakeholders will continue ahead of a possible vote, with the next major meeting scheduled for July 23 at the MLS All-Star Game in Austin.
