To enhance fairness and efficiency, modern tournaments are turning to Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT), a system designed to support Video Assistant Referees (VARs) in making quicker, more accurate, and more consistent offside decisions.
What Is SAOT?
SAOT is an advanced technology that combines artificial intelligence and tracking cameras to automatically detect offside situations. It doesn’t fully automate the decision-making process — instead, it provides alerts and data that assist VAR officials in their final call.
How SAOT Works
Tracking Cameras Up to 30 specialized cameras are installed around the stadium to track both the ball and 29 data points on each player, capturing movements at a rate of 50 times per second. Data Analysis AI algorithms process this data in real time to precisely determine the positions of all players and the ball during gameplay. Kick-Point Detection The system pinpoints the exact moment the ball is played (known as the kick-point) to assess whether an attacking player is in an offside position at that instant. Automated Offside Alerts If the system detects a potential offside, it sends an automatic alert to the VAR. VAR Confirmation The final decision still lies with the human VAR, who reviews the alert, cross-checks with match context (such as player involvement), and confirms whether the offside call is valid.

Despite its high-tech nature, SAOT still requires human oversight. VAR officials must validate the system’s findings and judge whether an offside situation warrants a formal decision. This hybrid model ensures technology supports — but does not replace — human judgment.
