Averaging a triple-double over the course of an NBA season is one of the rarest and most celebrated feats in basketball. It requires not only elite skill in scoring, rebounding, and playmaking, but also remarkable consistency and endurance. As of the 2024–25 season, only three players in NBA history have accomplished this legendary milestone:
1. Oscar Robertson (1961–62 Season)
Team: Cincinnati Royals Averages: Points: 30.8 Rebounds: 12.5 Assists: 11.4
The first to ever do it, Oscar Robertson set the standard during the 1961–62 season. His all-around dominance and revolutionary style paved the way for generations of versatile players. For over 50 years, he stood alone in this achievement.
2. Russell Westbrook (2016–17, 2017–18, 2018–19, 2020–21 Seasons)
Teams: Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards Most Notable Season (2016–17): Points: 31.6 Rebounds: 10.7 Assists: 10.4
Westbrook shattered expectations in 2017 by not only becoming the second player to average a triple-double for a season but also by breaking Robertson’s record with 42 triple-doubles in a single year. He would go on to accomplish the feat in four separate seasons, a record that may never be matched.
3. Nikola Jokić (2024–25 Season)
Team: Denver Nuggets Averages (through 69 games): Points: ~26 Rebounds: ~12 Assists: 10.0+
Nikola Jokić etched his name into the history books during the 2024–25 season, becoming just the third player ever to average a triple-double over a full season. It became mathematically certain on April 11, 2025, when he recorded his 700th assist of the season during Denver’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. With 70 games played, that guaranteed he would average at least 10.0 assists — solidifying the triple-double season even if he did not record another assist.
Jokić’s accomplishment is particularly unique among centers and big men, showcasing his elite vision and playmaking ability. Known for his unselfish style, high basketball IQ, and versatile skill set, Jokić’s triple-double season is a testament to the evolving nature of the NBA.
A Historic Club
With only three names — Oscar Robertson, Russell Westbrook, and now Nikola Jokić — the triple-double season remains one of basketball’s most exclusive clubs. As the modern NBA continues to prioritize pace, spacing, and ball movement, we may see more players flirt with the milestone. But achieving it still demands greatness — night in and night out.
