NBA Game 1 Scoring Legends: Historic Performances That Set the Tone

Posted on April 20, 2025 by Santiago Leon

In the NBA Playoffs, Game 1 is often a tone-setter — a moment where stars rise to the occasion and announce their postseason intentions. Over the years, several players have delivered legendary performances in Game 1 matchups, but a few stand out for their record-breaking scoring feats.

Donovan Mitchell’s 57-Point Masterclass

On August 17, 2020, Donovan Mitchell etched his name in playoff history with a stunning 57-point performance for the Utah Jazz against the Denver Nuggets. Despite the Jazz falling short in overtime, Mitchell’s explosion ranks as the highest-scoring Game 1 performance ever and the third-highest single-game scoring effort in NBA playoff history. Only Michael Jordan (63 points) and Elgin Baylor (61 points) have scored more in a playoff game.

Trae Young’s Emergence on the Big Stage

In Game 1 of the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals, Trae Young dropped 48 points on the Milwaukee Bucks, leading the Atlanta Hawks to a shocking road win. It was a coming-of-age performance for Young, showcasing his ability to dominate under pressure and carry his team deep into the playoffs.

Michael Jordan’s Game 1 Dominance

Michael Jordan, known for his clutch playoff performances, also holds a place in Game 1 lore. In the first round of the 1986 playoffs against the Boston Celtics, Jordan scored 50 points in Game 1. Though the Bulls would lose the series, Jordan’s efforts set the stage for what would become one of the most iconic careers in basketball history.

Paolo Banchero’s 2025 Playoff Debut

In the 2025 NBA Playoffs, Orlando Magic’s Paolo Banchero made headlines by scoring 36 points in Game 1 against the Boston Celtics. While the Celtics ultimately won 103–86, Banchero’s effort showcased his growth into a franchise player capable of delivering on the league’s biggest stage.

The Significance of Game 1 Brilliance

These standout Game 1 performances reflect more than just individual talent; they often symbolize a shift in momentum, the rise of a new star, or the start of a memorable playoff run. Whether it’s Mitchell’s unforgettable night in the bubble or Young’s icy demeanor in a hostile environment, Game 1 continues to serve as a proving ground for the NBA’s elite.

As each postseason unfolds, fans eagerly await which player will write the next chapter in the history of Game 1 greatness.
