When Did the Seattle SuperSonics Leave the NBA? Full History of the Franchise Move

Posted on March 26, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The Seattle SuperSonics officially left the NBA after the 2007–08 season, marking the end of NBA basketball in Seattle for the first time since 1967.

The franchise later relocated and became the Oklahoma City Thunder, making the SuperSonics’ departure one of the most controversial moves in league history.

The Final Season in Seattle

The SuperSonics played their final season in Seattle during the 2007–08 NBA season. Despite a loyal fan base and a long basketball tradition, the franchise faced ongoing arena and ownership issues.

At the time, the team was owned by a group led by Clay Bennett, which purchased the franchise in 2006. Soon after taking over, ownership began seriously pursuing relocation options.

Why Did the SuperSonics Leave Seattle?

Several major factors led to the team’s move:

  • Arena concerns: The team played at KeyArena, which ownership argued was outdated and no longer competitive with newer NBA venues.
  • Failed funding efforts: Attempts to secure public support for a new or renovated arena in Seattle did not succeed.
  • Ownership direction: The new ownership group had ties to Oklahoma City and moved toward relocation after negotiations in Seattle stalled.

The franchise ultimately reached a legal settlement with the city of Seattle, allowing the team to relocate after paying a settlement fee.

Becoming the Oklahoma City Thunder

After leaving Seattle, the franchise was rebranded as the Oklahoma City Thunder for the 2008–09 NBA season.

While the players, front office, and franchise rights moved to Oklahoma City, Seattle retained the SuperSonics’ history, branding, and name for any potential future NBA team.

  • The SuperSonics name, colors, and legacy remain tied to Seattle
  • The Thunder began play in 2008–09 as the relocated franchise

Could the SuperSonics Return?

Seattle is often mentioned as one of the top candidates for a future NBA expansion team. Because the SuperSonics’ identity was preserved, a future franchise in Seattle could potentially revive the original name and branding.

Conclusion

The Seattle SuperSonics left the NBA in 2008, following the conclusion of the 2007–08 season. The team then moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder, while Seattle kept the SuperSonics’ identity alive for a possible return in the future.

Even years later, the departure remains a major moment in NBA history and one that Seattle basketball fans have never forgotten.
