Veteran center Kevon Looney has agreed to sign a one-year, $3.9 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, Looney’s agent, Todd Ramasar, confirmed to The Athletic on Tuesday.
Looney, 30, was an unrestricted free agent who last played for the New Orleans Pelicans. He is a three-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors (in 2017, 2018, 2022) who served as a key role player known for his rebounding. ESPN was first to report the news of his deal with the Lakers.
In the wake of the Lakers’ stunning decision to land 24-year-old big man Walker Kessler via a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz last week, Looney gives the Lakers more frontcourt depth at a time when size is sorely needed to contend in the West. Whether it’s the San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Chet Holmgren, the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokić, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert or the Houston Rockets’ Alperen Şengün, there is no shortage of excellent big men in the conference.
