Crochet’s gem leads Red Sox past Yankees in Game 1 of Wild Card

Garrett Crochet pitched like the ace the Boston Red Sox traded for, outdueling Max Fried with 11 strikeouts over 7.2 innings of one-run ball in a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the best-of-three AL wild-card series.

Pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida had the winning blow for Boston, ripping a go-ahead two-run single off Yankees reliever Luke Weaver in the seventh inning. Aroldis Chapman then finished off his former team with a four-out save, striking out Trent Grisham after loading the bases with none out in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the Red Sox win.
