The horse that staged an incredible finishing run to win a historic Kentucky Derby won’t race for the Triple Crown.
Cherie DeVaux, who became the first female trainer to win the 152nd Run for the Roses on May 2, announced Wednesday that Golden Tempo will skip the Preakness Stakes on May 16, ending any chance of reaching the sports’ pinnacle.
DeVaux said the decision was made after thoughtful discussion and with the horse’s long-term well-being in mind. It means there will be no Triple Crown winner for the eighth-straight year.
“We are incredibly appreciative of the excitement and support surrounding a possibility of a Triple Crown run. The enthusiasm from racing fans, our owners and our entire team has meant more to us than we can properly express,” DeVaux wrote.
