Cleveland Guardians star third baseman José Ramírez sustained a hamate bone fracture in his left wrist and will be placed on the injured list, the team announced, according to Zack Meisel of The Athletic.
Ramírez exited Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers in the sixth inning after suffering the injury leading off in the fifth.
“He had a similar injury, I think, to his right hand a few years ago,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said postgame, according to Tom Withers of The Associated Press. “He tried to go back out. He knew the position we were in, grabbed his glove, and said, ‘Maybe I can still play defense,’ but he couldn’t squeeze his glove.”
The four-time AL MVP finalist has appeared in 72 games this season, leading the majors.
