The New York Mets have offloaded a third relief pitcher at the trade deadline, moving right-hander Luke Weaver to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a source told ESPN’s Jorge Castillo on Monday.
Infield prospect Sammy Stafura is going to New York in the deal, according to multiple reports.
The addition of Weaver, who is in the first season of a two-year, $22-million deal, signals an unusually aggressive financial push by the typically frugal Pirates, who are looking to end a decade-long playoff drought.
