Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin ventured into previously unchartered territory in Wednesday’s 6-1 win over the St. Louis Blues, becoming the first player in NHL history to join the 900-goal club.
The 40-year-old scooped up a loose puck and backhanded it into the net with Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington out of position.
Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s all-time leading goal-scorer with his 895th tally last season. He scored a remarkable 44 goals in 65 games, missing time with a broken leg early in the season.
