Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has resigned following his team’s shock last-32 exit from the World Cup at the hands of Paraguay, and the federation is already lining up a move for Jurgen Klopp to replace him.
“In the days since we went out I’ve done a lot of thinking and spoken with trusted people in my personal life and at the (federation),” Nagelsmann said in a statement. “This decision was anything but easy for me. My main aim has always been the team’s success. After such a bitter disappointment, they’ve earned the chance for a completely fresh start.”
Nagelsmann, who was under contract until the 2028 European Championship, accepted the German Football Federation’s (DFB) request for him to step down, Bild and Sky Germany reported.
His departure leaves the door open for Klopp.
The federation said it plans to speak with the ex-Liverpool manager, adding that he has “already signaled his willingness in general to take on the role.”
Klopp, who left Liverpool in 2024 after a hugely successful stay during which he won the Champions League and Premier League, is currently Red Bull’s global head of football but reportedly has a release clause that would allow him to take the Germany job.
