Why Was Jarell Quansah Sent Off Against Mexico? England Defender Shown Straight Red Card After VAR Review

Posted on July 6, 2026July 6, 2026 by Santiago Leon

England defender Jarell Quansah was sent off during the second half of England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after a dangerous tackle on Jesús Gallardo.

The dismissal left England with 10 men for more than 35 minutes, but the Three Lions held on to secure a place in the quarterfinals.

Why Was Jarell Quansah Sent Off?

Quansah was initially shown a yellow card following a challenge on Mexico defender Jesús Gallardo in the 54th minute.

However, the referee was instructed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. After watching the replay, the official upgraded the decision to a straight red card for serious foul play.

The tackle was deemed dangerous because:

  • Quansah’s studs were exposed during the challenge.
  • His foot made high contact with Gallardo after riding over the ball.
  • The force of the challenge was considered excessive.
  • The tackle endangered the safety of the opponent.

Under FIFA’s Laws of the Game, these factors are sufficient for a player to be sent off for serious foul play.

Was the Red Card Controversial?

The decision sparked debate among supporters and pundits.

Some believed Quansah was unfortunate because he appeared to win part of the ball before his momentum carried his boot into Gallardo. Others argued that the exposed studs and high contact made the dismissal the correct decision under the current interpretation of the Laws of the Game.

Following the VAR review, the referee determined that the challenge met the threshold for a straight red card.

How England Responded

Despite being reduced to 10 players, England managed to protect their lead and defeated Mexico 3-2 in one of the most entertaining matches of the Round of 16.

The victory sends England into the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, where they will face Norway.

Will Jarell Quansah Miss the Quarterfinal?

A straight red card for serious foul play normally results in at least a one-match suspension, meaning Quansah is expected to miss England’s quarterfinal clash against Norway unless the disciplinary committee overturns or reduces the suspension after reviewing the incident.

Final Thoughts

Jarell Quansah’s sending off was one of the defining moments of England’s Round of 16 victory over Mexico. After a VAR review, the challenge on Jesús Gallardo was upgraded from a yellow card to a straight red due to excessive force, exposed studs, and dangerous contact. Although England finished the match with 10 men, they held on for a memorable 3-2 win to book their place in the World Cup quarterfinals.
