2026 NBA Finals Ratings Reach Highest Levels Since Michael Jordan Era

Posted on June 17, 2026June 17, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The 2026 NBA Finals delivered historic television ratings, becoming the most-watched championship series in nearly three decades. The five-game showdown between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs averaged 20.6 million viewers on ABC, marking the highest NBA Finals audience since Michael Jordan’s final championship run with the Chicago Bulls in 1998.

According to Nielsen data released by ESPN, the Knicks-Spurs matchup became the most-watched NBA Finals broadcast in the history of the ABC and ESPN era, surpassing several memorable championship series featuring LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and the Golden State Warriors.

2026 NBA Finals Viewership Reaches Historic Heights

The 2026 Finals averaged 20.6 million viewers, representing a massive 157% increase compared to the 2025 NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers, which averaged just 10.3 million viewers.

The championship series also became the most-watched NBA Finals since the 1998 Finals, when Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to their sixth NBA title and averaged 29.04 million viewers on NBC.

NBA Finals Viewership Since 1998

The chart from Front Office Sports highlights how the 2026 NBA Finals reversed a years-long decline in championship ratings.

Key milestones include:

  • 1998 NBA Finals (Bulls vs. Jazz): 29.04 million viewers
  • 2016 NBA Finals (Cavaliers vs. Warriors): 20.28 million viewers
  • 2017 NBA Finals (Cavaliers vs. Warriors): 20.38 million viewers
  • 2025 NBA Finals (Thunder vs. Pacers): 10.3 million viewers
  • 2026 NBA Finals (Knicks vs. Spurs): 20.6 million viewers

The 2026 series outperformed both the 2016 and 2017 Cavaliers-Warriors Finals, which were previously considered the gold standard of modern NBA television audiences.

Game 5 Delivers Biggest NBA Finals Audience in a Decade

The championship-clinching Game 5 attracted 24.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched NBA Finals game since Game 7 of the 2016 Finals between Cleveland and Golden State.

That legendary 2016 contest, which featured LeBron James and Stephen Curry, drew approximately 31 million viewers as the Cavaliers completed their historic comeback from a 3-1 series deficit.

Why the Knicks-Spurs Finals Drew Massive Ratings

Several factors helped fuel the surge in viewership.

The New York Knicks captured their first NBA championship in 53 years, ending one of the longest title droughts in professional sports. As the largest television market in the United States, New York generated significant national interest throughout the series.

The matchup also featured two of the NBA’s biggest stars:

  • Jalen Brunson, who scored 45 points in the title-clinching Game 5
  • Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs’ generational superstar and one of the league’s most marketable players

Additionally, the Finals rekindled a historic rivalry. The Knicks and Spurs previously met in the 1999 NBA Finals, a five-game series won by San Antonio that averaged 16.01 million viewers. The 2026 rematch generated approximately 28% more viewers.

NBA Finals Outdraw Recent World Series Matchups

The 20.6 million average audience also compares favorably to other major American sports championships.

The last World Series to draw a larger audience was the 2016 Fall Classic between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, which averaged 22.8 million viewers and featured the Cubs ending a 108-year championship drought.

While the NFL’s Super Bowl continues to dominate American television with audiences exceeding 100 million viewers annually, the 2026 NBA Finals demonstrated that compelling storylines, superstar talent, and major-market franchises can still attract enormous audiences.

A New Era for NBA Television?

The strong ratings performance comes at a critical time for the NBA as the league enters a new media rights era.

The success of the Knicks-Spurs Finals suggests that marquee franchises, emerging stars, and compelling championship narratives remain powerful drivers of television viewership. With Jalen Brunson leading a resurgent Knicks franchise and Victor Wembanyama emerging as one of the faces of the league, the NBA appears well-positioned to build on its strongest Finals audience since the Michael Jordan era.

For the first time in nearly 30 years, NBA Finals viewership has crossed the 20-million-viewer threshold, signaling a major win for the league and its broadcast partners.
