The Pac-12 is back, its set to return on November 6th

The turning point for the return of fall sports for the Pac-12 came this month when it entered an agreement with a diagnostic testing company that will give each school the capability to conduct daily antigen tests on their athletes.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement “From the beginning of this crisis, our focus has been on following the science, data and counsel of our public health and infectious disease experts,” . “Our agreement with Quidel to provide daily rapid-results testing has been a game-changer in enabling us to move forward with confidence that we can create a safe environment for our student-athletes while giving them the opportunity to pursue their dreams.”

PAC-12 to plays seven games
Every Pac-12 team will play the five opponents in its division, plus a divisional crossover game, prior to the Dec. 18 conference championship game. The teams that do not qualify for the title game will play an additional conference game against a squad from the opposite division the same weekend. The Pac-12 will release its full schedule of games in the next few days, the conference said.

The Pac-12 has not received an indication it would be ineligible for the College Football Playoff due to its reduced schedule, sources said. Even if the Pac-12 doesn’t have a team worthy of inclusion in the four-team field, the eligibility component is important so it can be in position to collect the sizable payout. Last season, there was a $66 million base payout to each of the Power 5 conferences.

The Pac-12 said its decision to restart sports is subject to approval from state and local public health officials.

Daily testing helped the Pac-12 convince state and local officials in California and Oregon to lift restrictions that have made it impossible for teams to prepare for a football season.

There is still work to be done on that front, now in Colorado. Due to a recent spike in COVID-19 cases, Boulder County officials Thursday halted gatherings for college-aged residents for two weeks.

No fans will be permitted at Pac-12 sporting events taking place on campus, the conference said.

So that was a big component for the PAC 12 and joining us person that is a PAC 12 expert and also Ryan Krista a somewhat Pac 12 expert, Ryan Krista and Ty Turner. Welcome to the sports guys. Yeah, let’s start with Tyler Pac 12. You know, announced last night tell us what led to the announcement last night?

Tyler Turner
Oh, I think it was. Ah, where do I start? Well, I think what led to the mountain last night was the fact that there may be going to be the only conference in the FBS not plane. So that played a pretty strong role. I also think the fact that they’re financially just getting destroyed. I also think the fact that they did get so they really couldn’t use the excuse that they didn’t have a very good safety measure in place to keep the student athletes safe. I think what maybe I heard some rumblings that actually wasn’t as unanimous, they almost split out. And they some of them still wanted to push it back to January. And ultimately, there was a majority that didn’t 10 they’re able to convince the other ones and start now. But the way I see it between just you cannot possibly be left behind it would destroy the conference. It’s already behind all the other conferences as far as revenue, as far as really competitive liability. To join that conversation, and rut start back up.

Ryan, Crystal, tell us your your first reaction when you first heard Pac 12 was coming back this fall.

Ryan Christa
I was excited because obviously I’d like football in the last couple of weeks, you know, 10 o’clock at night, you know, all the games are over 11 o’clock. And it’s like, you’re just you’re itching for the you know, little Pac 12 after dark, you know what, like Kylie said, I think it came down to perception and reality that they can’t be the only league playing and in the springtime or winter time. So it just they got to bite the bullet and finish it, you know, and they got this good deal with the testing company, which I really don’t know why everybody you know, I know its price issue, but I feel like everybody should be hopping on these daily testing, you know, cuz let me work. we’re averaging about five cancellations a week, which is okay. But what kills you is that, you know, let’s just say Notre Dame, and you see out you know, Notre Dame has a couple of people test positive forces UCF to do all this contract tasting, and now, therefore, their game is canceled, you know, if we can get everybody involved in these daily testing, you don’t have all that contract tasting issue. But if the sidebar was good for the PAC 12, you know, good for, you know, the teams out there and players first and foremost, you know, we’re learning that you can play safely and keep these players safe. Especially because, I mean, there’s really no one on this campus, because I don’t think either, you know, because most of these schools are virtual. So it’s basically like having their own little bubble there. So it’s always good because I think there’s some quality teams, you know, this year, Oregon, and USC, you know, those are quality teams that could compete, I think, for the getting into playoffs.

Pac 12. Tyler, it’ll be a short season, and only seven gaming games. Um, we think about that amount, obviously, I believe they’re gonna play one non conference game. Tell us what is all format going to be looking like?

Tyler Turner
No, they’re not playing conference. Okay. Yep, they’re gonna be playing five divisional? One crossover. So divisional, there’s north and south, all the North play against each other, all the south and then there’s gonna be one crossover game between the North and the South. And then the final weekend, they are going to do just like the big 10 like their big brother, you know, what big brother does? You follow? Right? The Pac 12 following their daddy, the big 10 they’re going to all they’re going to play like one versus one, two versus two. Three versus three. Obviously, you’ll get a PAC 12 champion. And yeah, seven games is not ideal. course you’re kind of if you get a couple games canceled, you get the risk of playing three, four games, it’s just not very many. Um, but you know what, have a chance to crown a champion that will lead to a new york six, birth and who knows what happens who knows what happens, let’s say, Oregon, and people keep mentioning Oregon and USC, because I think they’re the only two teams that I think would have the ability this year to go seven to know. Um, and it’s kind of frustrating to me, I’m an Oregon guy. Oregon had unquestionably a college football playoff roster. But because they delayed Oregon lost a soul to the draft. They lost their students to starting corners, the Commodore Eleanor and Thomas Graham to the draft. I also heard Jevon Holland who is a projected high round draft pick I heard he’s probably going to apt out even though they’re doing a season. So Oregon’s not going to even be quite as good as they were. Because, I mean, he was the best lineman college football that affects your offensive line. So it’s kind of frustrating, but I think they’re the only two teams that could run the table. And USC last couple of players have their own officer best offensive lineman Vera Tucker, the best defensive interior lineman and jfa lay on and I you know, he just never know if he’s gonna show up in be able to put a top end performance week after week, and pretty inconsistent under clay Helton. But I think talent wise those two teams possibly could go seven at all, would seven and a know allow them to make the playoffs? I’d say probably not if you’re looking at it in a vacuum. But you know how unpredictable the seasons then if you have a bunch of other teams canceled games and you’re then comparing an eight versus seven and or a nine and two. Yeah, maybe maybe maybe then Oregon does get it or USA

college football playoffs. That’s the big elephant in the room. Obviously, a whole lot of these conferences are starting at different times. Ryan, obviously, Canada playoffs happen and Canada conference like the PAC 12 make it to the playoffs.

Ryan Christa
Like Tyler said, you know if everybody plays 10 games or in 11 games, which is an ideal situation for these other conferences, it is going to be hard for our team you know, they’re proven seven games that they’re worthy of making the playoffs but I think that’s ideally and the other teams on the play nine games or eight games. And you know you have an Oregon a USC who just blows everybody out of their conference. I think that’s what you gotta do. You gotta have a lot of IHS I think this is going to be a ridiculously hard year for the playoff committee to evaluate who the four best teams are because no you’re not playing the same amount of games you know, you’re dealing with, you know, on a week to week basis who’s going to be playing for you who you’re playing against is available. So I mean, it’s gonna be a lot of eye tests, you know, it’s not gonna you know, all games aren’t created equally. All conferences are definitely not created equally this year. So I could definitely see you know, a pack. One of the orientations that Oregon a USC making it but I think it is a long shot. Well, what it does is just make it more of a long shot for USC, another group of you CF, another group of five teams that make us so they’re the ones who kind of lose out on the news. This last couple weeks of the big time and Pac 12 coming back, but, you know, is is not like you just will get to the, you know, December and see what happens whether they play the playoffs or not. I think they’re pretty safe, you know, as long as the season doesn’t go totally into a dumpster fire, but I think they could be moving back a little bit just to see if we have more cancellations, you know, maybe announcing it, you know, a week or two later moving the games back a week or two.

How about you tie? What are your thoughts of that with the PAC 12 chances to make into the playoffs?

Tyler Turner
Like I just touched on that? Um, I think that’s dependent upon if other teams cancel how good the teams Look, if, if they are really dominant. And like I said, That’s why I was frustrated because I think Oregon, especially when they happen a school Domino, nor jevin Hall and Thomas Graham, I think they had the ability to be a team that would win every game by like 20 points like, and just be able to be so dominant. They’d be like, Damn, maybe Oregon is maybe they would get in on that. I don’t know now, because they lost some players. I don’t know if they’re going to be as dominant. I could still see Oregon being Saturday. No, I still think I don’t think I look, I just I’m gonna do an article on it. But I compared the rosters and even despite those losses, I still second best roster on baseline talent. And then as far as productivity and coaching impact called, still put Oregon one. Ah, and then USC probably falls there too. So there is a possibility they go seven and oh, but I just don’t know if it will be good enough to quit. Okay, yeah. I’m going walking in. There’s like a falcon flying around my head. I’m cool. Do you think it’s cool? I don’t know. But yeah, that’s my opinion. Ah, I think the only two possible teams that even remotely have the talent to make the college football playoff is Oregon and USC. from just a baseline perspective, from a returning production perspective, I have a team like Washington does have talent, a roster. The problem is, is they have a new head coach, they have a new offensive coordinator do pretty much all the cancellation stuff. I just don’t really have a really proficient offensive season. And even though I think they’re gonna be very good defensively, I know at least two teams, can they? Can they look really impressive data that I look at? I just don’t think there’s actually not playing a game. I just don’t know if there’s a team in the panel. Good enough this year to make the call.

Also, can you know, can the other teams come along? I know, there was some recent reports about Colorado University in Boulder that is shut down due to a spike. Do you think all teams can come around in the PAC 12? like Colorado? Um, well, I got till November anyways.

Tyler Turner
Well, what do you mean, exactly? Do you

think? What do you think? I mean, you know, obviously, Pac 12. would be a interesting conference, and obviously, with the politics and the officials. Yeah. Do you think there might be teamwork to that, you know, that that will have issues with their state governments? Or city like

Tyler Turner
actually like?

Correct.

Oh, I have an agreement. And I got further clarified yesterday, I think you’ll set I think what will happen is it’ll put California for instance, Colorado, for instance, Oregon was for instance, I’ll put the baby in behind the eight ball in regards to preparation, I think. And I’m saying I think that they will be able to play games. I just think that for instance, a team like Colorado that needs all the help that they can get. The only people think convenient and might put them upon the eight ball where they’re just even less competitive than they would be possibly in California, a team like Cal, which is returning some pieces are returning the quarterback but because the fact that they didn’t weren’t able to practice they’ve had very strict requirements in the county in Berkeley where they were they are, that maybe their teams just won’t be quite as good. As even they’re going to be, I think you’ll maybe more than anything, impact their competitive the competitive equity than it does actually the ability to play. Do you understand what I mean? I just think because of the lack of ability to play in as a team and practice as a team, they just won’t be as good. And so someone like cow who you could say, maybe because returning quarterback, pieces on the offensive side of the ball, you would have been like, oh, maybe they’re a dark horse, maybe they could upset. I don’t know if they can now because they need all the help division get operation standpoint, in order to the lack of overall talent. And because it had so many restrictions, I don’t know, I think that could could impact and pulling off like an upset that situation.

We have till November. So there’s plenty of time for all that to be settled through. It’d be on November 6. So quite interesting date. Ryan, any closing thoughts on the PAC 12 coming back?

Ryan Christa
Now, obviously, it’s good to have all five power five conferences, you know, I think it’s just it’s good day players are game playing, you know, whether they’ll make a big impact, you know, in the playoffs, we’ll see. But it gets them back on the schedule of everybody else. And hopefully, you know, get through this year, and then we’ll hope everything will kind of be better going into the 2021 season. So

right off the top of your head. Do you think there’s anyone in the PAC 12 that could go undefeated?

Ryan Christa
Oh, I think you definitely Oregon, I mean, I think them not slipping up in one game will be hard. I’d be hard pressed not to do that. USC has got the talent, too. But other than that, now, there’s no overall there’s no dominant team in the PAC 12 I think roster wise to come, you know, that’s gonna actually take over the other teams on a week to week basis. So yeah, that’s why I said it’s kind of a long shot. And I think what’s gonna hurt Oregon in USC is the mediocrity of the rest of the conference to

so you think so you think like Oregon could be undefeated? You just think it just might not be enough being undefeated in the back?

Ryan Christa
Yeah, I mean, I mean, it’s hard to say a seven and no team gets in over, you know, oh, you know, a 10 in one Ohio State team from the big time, you know, like I said, or maybe, you know, attending one Alabama or LSU or something, you know, I mean, like,

Tyler Turner
Yeah, because because as a you know, I take out my formula, and I just am looking at the baseline and other than Oregon USC, I just don’t think there’s even a team that’s just plain and simple. Good enough. And us USC because of coaching impact, the fact that clay Helton has done so much less with having more, and Oregon missing. There are some really good players that ended up opting out because the fact of all, you know, supposedly cancel their season, I think if there was going to be a team who was going to be Oregon with everyone, and they possibly could have been so dominant beaten everyone by 21 plus points, you know, put it over despite only playing seven games, I just don’t know if they’re gonna be that dominant, because of the losses of like guys like Peninsula, Commodore Lenore, Javon Holland, and Tom,

hey, this is my closing thought, Oregon USC, kind of Excel and recruiting. It keeps them fresh in the minds and recruits for next, you know, coming up and signing, you know, yeah. Yeah. I think if any of anything else, it keeps them in the minds of these elite players, they have commitments from, you know, whether they make it or not, this year is a weird year. And you know, you just gotta keep that momentum that you’re going on recruiting. I think that’s the biggest takeaway from least playing is that you stay fresh in the minds of these high school kids, you know, who got commitments to your school?

Oh, no, I agree

Can you hear me? Yeah. Yeah, no, I think that he’s right. And right now, Oregon has a number three class in the nation. So they have a lot to play for. I mean, by next year, especially with all the experience they’re going to give to get to younger guys, Oregon, I unquestionably will be a national champion contender, college football playoff contender in 2021. And USC, they need to turn it around number they had a horrible class last year, the number 63 class clay Helton thought he was gonna get fired the year before they didn’t have a great class. So USC really needs to turn the momentum and get some recruits in there because they’re actually have been heading rendre usual for USC all season so they’re on the trail. Because if Oregon can really finish off the top five classes Oregon up for a pretty successful period where they can dominate the pack.

And there you have it, Pac 12 assembling things together. Number six is the starting date for the PAC 12. Looking forward to where we might have Pac 12 week, but to TBD, Mountain West also made their announcement they’re coming back October 24. They’re gonna be back playing and playing eight games with the schedule yet to be released. The conference will hold this championship game on December 19. Ryan, you’re caught familiar with the Mountain West, what are your thoughts about them returning

same thing as Pac 12 that he carries, you know, get you back in the cycle let you let your players that are on your roster basically have three year playing college football year league and get their year back of eligibility. Again, this is does not really reflect on the playoffs because there’s only one team I’ve been has is you know, upper echelon as Boise State and they you know, return a good amount of players and I think a really good quarterback and Hank break Meister. But again, it’s it’s good to have you know, even a group of five teams back is still quality football, they’re just not played at the upper echelon as a PAC 12 does. But I think you know, again, it’s good for recruiting and it’s good for publicity, because you don’t want to, you don’t want to be that conference that misses out. So as I’m saying that, hopefully we’re you know, we get these Mac computers on and we have all 10 conferences playing football here by November, you know, obviously, this is a weird year, there’s a lot of different circumstances. But again, the, you know, the players who, you know, are still working hard to keep themselves safe and devoted to their team, you know, deserve a chance, even if it’s for a short season to play the game that they really love.

Tyler, your thoughts on on the Mountain West returning next month.

Tyler Turner
I’m very excited for the Mountain West and I appreciate them coming up with a plan and then like setting in stone, but if they’re not playing, I don’t they’re not gonna talk to me for the reason why San Jose, Fresno State and San Diego State all California schools, they still haven’t had the thing the restrictions completely lifted yet they have they have a temporary approval. They have a contingency plan, but it actually hasn’t been set in stone. How are they going to be prepared? San Jose State, for instance, is in the same county as Stanford. So that is some of the strictest COVID rules in California in the country. They’re not going to be able to play I mean, What’s the date today? September 24 25th. I mean, and there’s no you’re just gonna jump right into fall camp here on it hasn’t even been limited. So yeah, I mean, basically, I so I appreciate them, like kind of like being gung ho and saying, Hey, we’re gonna do this a game schedule, and that’s cool. Um, but they’re, I don’t see it. I think they’re gonna play November 7, two,

but here’s your favorite team for the Mountain West.

Favorite or do I think fast? I don’t really. I don’t really have a favorite. I guess if I’m Marcus royal. He was the offensive coordinator for Oregon. He was a very maligned offensive runner. He’s coaching you and Lv so I I’ll be rooting for them. I’m rooting for him to do well. I think Boise State’s the best team I think you have compared to other teams that are competitive. You know Fresno State San Diego State damn third years definitely where they’re competitive. I don’t know what transfers they’ve had come in because a lot of times can impact how good you are if you get a good transfer out from I think Jake Sears from USC went to one of the schools I’m not sure which one but um, so but I think Boise State’s definitely there has been a class for a long time with a Mountain West. And yeah, but I’m probably gonna leave this here.

Ah, no, I guess I said just good to get more West Coast football more football to watch you know, like your favorite team from the Mountain West. Oh, what Boise State? Blue Yes. I mean, I feel like I’m always kind of got that underdog you know, you know me Johnny group of five but here. Like I said, you know, stylight kind of hit on San Diego states a good team. Guy, new coach Brady Hoke going back to San Diego State, Fresno State. You know, there were Yeah,

I mean, really, really hot took one good year from San Diego State, you know, roll that into getting the Michigan job. But yeah, see, they’re good. You know, it like I said, you and Lv is always I think, a sleeping giant, you know, out there, and you know, the desert, you know, playing in that brand new spaceship stadium out there, I think it’s going to be good for recruiting. So, again, you know, like I said, I think Boise State this year, especially got the town they got the quarterback and I don’t think they’ll be really tested too much. But again, they really doesn’t matter. I live in a bowl system’s going to look like this year. So I mean, we’re just really all we can do is we’re guaranteed that, you know, the regular season games after that it’s you know,

the thing is, if Boise State can go eight no seven, and American has a couple losses, Boise State could end up being the team that gets out large, which is the new year.

I think, you know, they if they’re playing evenly stach I think you wait I’ve seen from UCF against Georgia Tech. They just got the athleticism a group of five teams usually don’t have and they got the quarterback you know. I mean, he’s a difference maker, you know, but it just I just don’t see speed and athleticism out a group of five teams like I saw Saturday against Georgia Tech.

I did not. I saw that Liberty one. I saw them week Willis was really really impressive. But no, I did not watch him

You know this is definitely you know, last year they were kind of an arid out team with buckshot and Gandy golden but you know with with Willis i mean he’s a big thick guy and speed you know he’s definitely an SEC athlete You know? So it’d be interesting you know he’s definitely you know, there’s gonna be games are gonna be asked to throw the ball you didn’t have to this week but you know eventually teams are gonna load up the box and force him to throw it but I think there was an impressive victory against an above average group of five team in Western Kentucky

all I know that a couple of you know that are lovely media sources are really pushing out the narrative that if you freeze can have a really good season he might take off to Southern Miss where he has connections possibly if a job like Vander Ville opens up in the sec, you know, they want to move him on from Liberty as quickly

I I mean, I think it’s interesting I don’t know how many jobs that can be opened up this year. But I mean, if he can, you know, really, you know, have another successful year which i think you know, other than ACC teams are playing you know, which I think they can town wise either what I’ve seen a circulation evenly you know, in a row game we’re gonna start with no fans, they should be able to you know, win that game but you know, Virginia Tech and NC State might be tough. You know, you’re looking at an eight in 273 team I think the best which is definitely gonna keep in mind looks good power five radar. Now, do it, do it.

I could see in a year like this with no fans, it could possibly pull up an upset against Virginia Tech in North Carolina State. It’s definitely possible.

And you know, it’s interesting, you know, five years ago last time, Florida and Ole Miss playing was my first every time venturing down to the swamp as I think I saw Santiago that day San Do you remember that? We did. We met in Gainesville. Nice. Things have changed. You know, Hugh, free you know, Ole Miss was number three in the country. You know, gators had will Greer when Jim McElwain was a coach, you know, in Florida, I think upset by at least 30 points that day. You know, I think they’re just they’re in the mission after missing the playoffs last year. They got a big bend back, you know? That, you know, that defense is tough. And he I thought he played very well other than one play. And actually, when that play I’ve watched, went back and watched some analysis on it. Even that bad interception. He just should have seen that he started coverage. Oh, I yeah. I think you said like in your home release. You have a rhythm going on? Yeah. I mean, in your Pro, you’re probably you’re coming you’re staying in your house. Like I mean, I think right now traveling the NFL is crazy. Because I think, you know, normally I think on a normal Sunday game you’re getting there, you know, Friday afternoon or Saturday, or Saturday morning now you’re you’re getting there. Either on the day of the game or really late Saturday you get in you get out and you know, it’s a lot different circumstances, I think you’re not getting the rest and relaxation you normally get any NFL in college is the same idea. Everything is. So the actual gameplay is probably minimal effects. But I think the whole travel situations a lot different, especially if you’re going cross country, or you don’t have as much in college. But I think in the NFL, I think that’s affects you a lot. You know, I kind of have a roaring crowd, but you know, 20 if you have a certain amount of college students in a game who are allowed in with noxious that can make a difference, you know, more in the NFL, you know, you look at the NFL, you stay empty, especially in Miami, San Diego, they looked like they had hundred yards between fans, you know? Yeah, I can read that voice. You know, when you’re separated like that, that’s gonna make little no impact. But you know, on college days, I feel like they’re gonna be a little bit closer. They’re probably the CDC would probably recommend but um, so I think you could have a little bit of an impact there with no eyes But again, I yeah, it’s it’s definitely not the same as it normally is for sure.
