This week the SEC was hit by COVID, four SEC games that were suppose to be played this weekend has been postponed.

This week, the SEC was hit hard by COVID COVID got the SEC eventually did and happened this week couple of games canceled. But we got a man that used to play in Alabama. They used to live in Tuscaloosa Matt CODEL. Welcome back to the sports cast.

Glad to be here. Thanks for having me. And first of all, we want to give a shout out to all our servicemen and servicewomen who served our country in the past when the President just wasn’t

happy Veterans Day as well here the sports cast we love our veterans. We got a few that listen in this show and everything else. So Matt, tell me how have you been this past month? And your overall look on the SEC.

Matt Caddell
I’ve been doing pretty well to have a sec football. So up until this week. I think SEC is you know, kind of how I predicted I predicted Florida coming up the east and like you know, Bama is coming out the West but you know, big surprise for me is Arkansas stuff. I think coach Pittman is doing a very good job with that program. They have really good defense. They just know how to, you know beat teams in sec. You know, Texas a&m, I think for telemon they finally turn it around so they could possibly hop into the playoffs as of late. And you know, I just think you know, Georgia you know this with them their quarterback, this is their biggest issue. I don’t know what it is about quarterbacks you know, I thought Tennessee was gonna be a little bit better this year. But they seem to kind of be you know, digressing. Most champion soccer Lana, I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t know if he’s going to be there. Be out this week or another two weeks, so he’s gonna have to win some games. So, you know, Auburn, a beat LSU pretty bad. So it was very surprising to see LSU just really struggles. So all in all, you know, think SEC is doing well, you know, Mississippi State started off, you know, really on Florida first week versus LSU. But, you know, I think everybody knows how to defend them. And, you know, with Ole Miss, you know, lane, I think once lane gets us guys, they’re gonna be they’re gonna be, you know, very more competitive in sec.

Santiago Leon
Before we move forward, what were your thoughts over the Florida and Georgia game? Which Florida 144 to 28. I was surprised when I saw a score, but what were your thoughts about it?

Matt Caddell
You know, I, you know, products would delete things like 4124 in at half time. And, you know, I know, Georgia has a lot of injuries and that quarterback players was really hurting them. But, you know, for Florida, it only scored three points in the second half. You know, I still think they haven’t made to that league level, like Alabama. I know, Georgia has a defense. But, you know, Florida should at least put at least 10 to 14 points up in that game. To me, they’re good in the east. But something they’re vulnerable, where, you know, team Alabama can really dominate them for for four quarters. You know, Georgia, I just think they just hit hard with injuries, they really haven’t found a quarterback. So and they had chances, even with the backup in the second half to come back. So it was just shocked that Florida just didn’t have that kind of killer instinct. But uh, you know, Florida has a lot of talent speed all around the ball, you know, contrast is up for now one of the Heisman races, as well as Nat Jones. So, you know, you know, I think it was past due for demo to beat Georgia and interesting to see how that affects recruiting both for both schools.

Yeah, Georgia, you know, one of the top two recruiting schools in the country did not perform well, this game. And I mean, I guess there’s some cases where, you know, like, the recruiting ranking doesn’t really translate into like the results on the field, but what are your thoughts about that?

Matt Caddell
Yeah, I mean, I mean, it just goes to show you. I mean, obviously, if the recruits come in for, you know, teams like Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, you know, is going to, you know, show in the program and, you know, being in college football playoff, things like that before Georgia hasn’t So, you know, I don’t know what’s going on over there. I know he had a new offensive coordinator, things like that. It’s just, I mean, they were everybody was hyping their defense, but our don’t put up 4241 on them. Florida put up 44. So, I don’t know, think it’s gonna help affect them probably in a negative way in recruiting, especially for some, you know, and so say guys where, you know, it’s highly competitive, or either, you know, Alabama or Georgia, and places like that. So, I mean, I just don’t know, I mean, I guess it’s, I don’t know, I guess they’re just struggling. But you mean, like you said they’ve had to number one recruiting classes, and it hasn’t showed on the field. So, you know, I don’t know what the talent, the recruits are going to look at that and say so. But you know, Kirby is a good recruiter, so he just got translated on the field.

Santiago Leon
It will be quite interesting what happens and you’re right, like the players that are on the fence of where to go, they might second guess with Georgia, perhaps go to Alabama. But of course, there’s other teams involved. But Alabama was not a bad choice. As we both know, oh, a another big matchup was Clemson and Notre Dame or day one in, in overtime. 47 football already, um, that put Alabama to number one, Notre Dame obviously did not have Lawrence, Trevor Lawrence on the field due to COVID. Um, what are your thoughts about the result?

Matt Caddell
Um, you know, I was, you know, I was very surprised, you know, especially on the defensive end for Notre Dame. You know, there were, you know, a lot of push on the quarterback. It was a close game, we’re going back and forth. But, uh, you know, Clemson and kudos to them, you know, they’re playing the backup quarterback. It took it to overtime. You know, it’s just a good game, you know, kudos Notre Dame. You know, I think they probably have the personnel from that, you know, net assessors will out in essence championship game versus Alabama. But, you know, they look pretty good. You know, I’m, you know, I’m happy for him. So it’s going to be interesting. You know, how What does comes into Deus trivialize come back, like dinner? because Obama in my mind, I’m Trevor Lawrence. You know, I have the COVID. I’m like, I don’t know, if I’m coming back. You know, I’m just gonna focus on get prepared to deal with the Jets or the Patriots or, you know, maybe the Falcons but I don’t know if I come back. But you know, you probably will. But, you know, it’s gonna be interesting, because they’ll probably play again in the national championship, I mean, acc championship. And Notre Dame wins. You know, that’s definitely going to put Crimson out, but cleanser wins. I don’t think you get to see ACC teams. So that’s going to be kind of tough. I think you definitely have Alabama, and you definitely have probably Ohio State. I don’t know about the West Coast, I think is where you might be able to have two, maybe a Clemson and Notre Dame. So that’d be pretty interesting.

You brought up something very significant there, Matt. Trevor Lawrence not coming back into the college football field, which I think I heard something earlier this week as well. How significant is that? Do you think that’d be a? Do you think there’ll be a very strong consideration for him? I mean, obviously, I mean, you know, there’s nothing else to prove for him. He knows he’ll be a, a first round draft pick, possibly a number one. But do you think there’s a very strong possibility he would not step on a college football field?

Matt Caddell
I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s a strong possibility. But me just thinking about it. Like if I’m in his shoes, you know, you know, I played and I watched the backup quarterback. You know, I

can which which, which, which, which? He’s pretty good, too.

Matt Caddell
Yeah, he’s pretty good. I can easily say, you know, I’m just gonna focus on, you know, the NFL, you know, working out those sight things, and I don’t think it’s going to hurt the team. You know, it’s just that, you know, he’s proved I think he’s won two national championships. He’s been one of the, obviously one of the top quarterbacks the past, you know, two to three years. So, I mean, I don’t think he has anything approved for him to go out there. You know, maybe possibly risk an injury. I just don’t think that’s a smart idea. If I was him, I was just sit out. I mean, you already play some games. So I just if it was me, I would just sit out what are your thoughts?

Unless he doesn’t wanna play for the Jets? He will play?

Matt Caddell
Yeah, I think I don’t think I think the Jets just trying to get more first round draft picks. So I think somebody is going to come up. want that spot

for Trevor Large I don’t know if it’s maybe the Patriots, you know, they used to have a lot of pits. I was about to say the Patriots because the Patriots could make a move to tank to get this guy. Yeah. And no, the Patriots probably spoke to his people.

Matt Caddell
Yeah, the Patriots probably finished what maybe like, no probably usually have a top 10 draft pick. And I think what the Jets are trying to do is accumulate as many draft picks as possible. So, you know, I wouldn’t be surprised if somebody you know, jumped out there. Maybe I don’t know what’s going to be with Ravello and San Fran maybe Shanahan jumps the gun or, you know, anything, so I definitely wouldn’t be surprised to see the Patriots might try to grab Trevor Lawrence.

Trevor Lawrence could replace anyone in the NFL right now. Man Really? Easily is unbelievable. I’ve never seen him be like this. Maybe since Dan Marino.

Matt Caddell
Yeah, He’s good. He’s good. But yeah, it’s gonna be interesting to see. I think he gets to a good situation. He put some pieces around him, you know, I’m just focused on the Patriots. If he gets the Patriots and maybe the Patriots, you know, you know, pick up Mike Watteau, or you know, devise a snare then he does is put more pieces around him they will be in contention, I believe.

Interesting. You put an Alabama player there waddle. Anyways, um, right now, the top 25 Alabama is number one back at it, which is not very foreign to them. Notre Dame, Ohio State and then Clemson then Texas a&m, which you mentioned earlier. Florida, Cincinnati, BYU Miami, Indiana. How do you feel about my by Alabama’s prospects? Obviously, you know, there’s been some second thoughts about their defense, but it’s Alabama on their way to on the way to, you know, to stay at the number one spot?

Matt Caddell
You know, I believe so I think they’ve hit the hardest part of their schedule in the first six games, you know, obviously plan. Georgia, you know, Tennessee’s a tough out those type games, you know, and I think, you know, playing Lane Kiffin and that type of offense, the sole challenge and I think that’s what helped boost our confidence moving forward. I think the defense took on a lot of ownership and just change their mentality moving forward. So, you know, there’s gonna be a tough out. So I think for Alabama, right now, they just got to focus on improving, getting better, you know, just finding ways to replace water down the field if they have to, but, you know, I don’t think if you know, it’s funny, like I was watching the Mississippi State game, you know, it doesn’t see Baker and I just think Sark and kasavin had such a vanilla game plan for that game. They’re really not so much and they probably want to show Baker and then this LSU game, but since we’re not playing in them, so we prophesy there we go a few more games with our best game plan until we like maybe face Auburn, or I don’t know about the rescheduled LSU game so I was fine. I think places that need to be just continue to get better, stay healthy, and just continue to improve.

Yeah, you’re right each week. as Matt mentioned, Alabama hat has gotten there over with their toughest part, the schedule, they just went through it. The next couple of games, Kentucky, Auburn and Arkansas, which Arkansas you mentioned, they’re not as bad as people thought they were, um, the game they were supposed to play this weekend was the LSU Tigers the SEC. They, they were saying today that the weight that the game of LSU and Alabama will be postponed because there was an outbreak at LSU. Alabama has been doing really well with these protocols. I think just Saban had had a little bit of a mishap it wasn’t as bad. And some assistant coach, but um, they canceled a couple games this weekend. Alabama LSU, Texas a&m, Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri and Auburn and Mississippi State. Matt. It feels like it’ll be a sec. No sec. I mean, there’ll be not as good sec games this weekend, you can say?

Matt Caddell
Yeah, I mean, you know, it’s just it’s 2020. You know, COVID is spiking up and across the country. So I just think nobody album LSU game. You know, I was very shocked to hear the news. You know, I thought it would have broke this news. You know, maybe last week during the bye week, that waiting, probably a little bit more prepared. So it didn’t seem like they handled the situation very well at LSU programs seemed like they lacked discipline, but I feel like it just shows you how this went out on the football team program players are, you know, to really have take ownership and doing what they can to, you know, stay healthy. And, you know, just Reagan you know, all across the country. I think it has something to do with polite I think airplanes has a lot to do you know, you kind of circulating the same air.

has to please read. Yeah. Yeah, you know, Florida had their big spread a couple weeks ago. They seem to have it under control. So, you know, I just think, you know, this week would be a pretty rough week. But I think you know, after that we’ll probably be fine with COVID. But, you know, I don’t know how the SEC if they’re gonna try to reschedule the games, I just don’t know looking at the schedule. I think the SEC championship games tonight, I believe.

Santiago Leon
I will double check on that. I believe it’s so I think it’s December 19. Um, but that’s something that within the sports guys we were talking about, like the will have to post I mean, that they’ll have to push back the playoffs? Yeah, I wonder reschedule these games?

Matt Caddell
Yeah, I don’t see that happening. Because you got Kentucky this week. They have Auburn next week. They have Arkansas and I think that puts us at like, what, December 1 week in December? Maybe you can add them late.

Yeah. LSU is not really a LSU game decider. Anything?

Matt Caddell
Yeah. LSU still has the reschedule that Florida Yang. Oh, no, this was for the LSU Florida game. So that’s gonna put a wrinkle so I just don’t see a pathway of rescheduling the LSU Alabama game.

So yeah, and this is the championship game is a December 19 as we mentioned before, so it is a pretty tight schedule, because you’re kind of kissing towards Christmas and New Year’s. Not saying the weeks but

Matt Caddell
yeah, I don’t see it. I didn’t probably just have to play it next year. Because I mean, if LSU didn’t have their they already played Florida. Then you got obviously plug it in, you know that week before the SEC championship game. I think that’s the 12th. So but since they have the play for what and probably have to reschedule that game. I just don’t see how it’s

gonna happen. And plus LSU is not playing for a playoff spider anything. Yeah. So anyways, as Matt was saying it could be postponed or it could be canceled No word yet. From the SEC, they announced it today. I’m sure we’ll get a word with from them this week. But one plus side about these games being postponed is for players to get themselves healthy for the next game. So it’s always a good to have a week week off because football is brutal. When it comes to injuries. Let’s look at another conference. The big 10 a big game Maryland, Ohio State was canceled as well. Maryland football had a spike in COVID positive test. And the highest a game scheduled for Saturday was is canceled completely. So that will not be rescheduled. Big 10 is also running on a tight schedule. How significant is that? For Marilyn and to Leah? Take a look.

I think is pretty significant. You know, Ohio State’s Ohio State but you know you look at to Leah i mean he’s just on fire right now the Maryland program ever since that first game, so he’s, you know, he’s been putting up numbers. You know, I think better than Justin feels. So I think that would be a significant game because I don’t think the big team has enough space in their calendar to reschedule the game. So, you know, I think Ohio State probably dodged a bullet. I still think they have to play Indiana and ruk while they play at Rutgers, but I still think they had to play Indiana who I think is the biggest surprise in the big 10 this year, so it’s going to be challenging, so I was hoping I was looking forward to Maryland playing Ohio State I know that would have been a great matchup just to see where you know if there’s going to be a shootout I think if there’s going to be a shootout be played and more in favor for Marilyn. Possibly upset but we’ll never know.

We’ll never know for sure the games are canceled. How um, how do you see Ohio State this season?

Matt Caddell
I think I think they’re pretty good. I think it starts with Justin bills. He’s pretty accurate. You know, he’s seems to be every game seems like 25 or 27 or something like that. With a couple touchdowns. They look okay, you know, I haven’t been I haven’t been watching. I’ve been more impressed with you know, Maryland and Indiana. So I’ve been kind of like following them. I know what Ohio State brings, you know how they are. So it’s been interesting, but I’m really excited. Like I mentioned about Indiana, Maryland, just see what type of noise they’re gonna make.

Indiana is right now in the top 10 of the AP top 25 which was released this week. They have any great performance. They’re not. They’re doing well in football, they usually do well in basketball. So really happy for them. So we’ll see what happens with the big 10 of course SEC is making a lot of noise. Let’s another big news today for now bound player by running back. Scarborough got signed by the Seattle Seahawks the practice squad. He was with the lions but got cut a couple weeks ago. Both Scarborough you’re very familiar with them. Do you think this is a break to break in and hopefully Haley have a permanent spot in a NFL team

Matt Caddell
you know I really do think it is you know i think is thinner down and DJ Dallas and they probably need to spark you know I think he’s kind of fits what he want to do just a downhill run a big bruising type runner with really good speed so not just think that’s a good fit so for Seattle but I don’t think the problem Seattle is not the offense you know to have Russell Wilson I think the problem with Dan is that defense I think David danger Meyer posted that the reason they’re losing so much on defense they go majority of the game covers zero on cover one so I think I need to play more zone just to kind of keep everything underneath them and you know, kind of have a bend but don’t break defense.

Yeah, we’ll see how a bowl Scarborough does. Of course, he’s not had some good luck. He was drafted two years ago into the NFL 2018. So hopefully he’ll get a permanent spot. And the lions was his team they was really looking around with But no, no luck there. Other Alabama players in and the NFL to attack a low to an O mat with the dolphins. Great, great two games. They beat the Cardinals this past weekend by three points to is looking good.

Yeah, it was looking good. You know, I just I you know, I kind of figured out a better career probably in the NFL because you know, they protect the quarterback a lot more than what they do in sec. So you know what, for me, I’m just you know, I think that football teams kind of mind the dolphins football team especially deepens kind of rally behind to, you know, they they start the LA Rams defense, I mean offense now with a lot of turnovers and you know, to stop as Sean McVeigh lead offense with Jared Goff you know, to be talent challenging, but, you know, they, they took the bull by the horns and stopped them and they just played Kyler Murray, you know, kokis Barrett was, you know, DeAndre Hopkins layer zero. And you know, I gotta prove I think, you know, obviously statistically, polymer had the better game with three passing touchdowns and one Russian but I just think you know, he made the plays that need to be made in the second game and he looks very good. So I think the sky’s the limit for us and the dolphins You know, I think they keep on this track and keep getting better. You know, the thing that on a four game winning streak, they have the charges this week, don’t think that’s gonna get a great game herbivorous to match up and I got the dolphins in that game. It’s gonna be interesting. So they’ve been a strong I wouldn’t be surprised to see 200 dolphins and coach for is in the NFL playoffs?

Yes. Which which? Which actually, I was gonna bring that up to you. They’re second place in the AFC East Patriots are looking at a lot I mean, I mean pages are not looking good jets are definitely a another team looking to tank Um, can we see this dolphins team going into the playoffs?

Matt Caddell
I think so. You know, I think that’d be the Jets. The game in New England. That’s going to be a tough one. I just think that defense is just so stout. You know. The pages don’t look the same without Edelman I just think he’s been kind of banged up. I think they can I think usually Miami as assuming last year they play the dolphins and they play the Pacers better in the second game, so I think if they win that one, I think not a play on in Miami so that’d be good. And I think they have to go to Buffalo which is going to be a challenging game because I think you know the bills are getting healthy you know even if they lose that game you know, they’re still number two but uh, they win that game you know they can they can make a lot of noise to be number one ALCS but you know, who’s got some great matches I just hope he continues to you know, get better and better because, you know, Miami could be a sneaky team because the defense is so good.

They’re so good. Like he got some good matches you know, he’s got to play the charges this weekend. He’s gonna play borough to borough again. matchup will be good.

So far, the rookies have been doing good. Herbert’s been doing great two has been doing good. love to see the Herbert versus to match up finally, because we didn’t see it in college, of course, but this could be an interesting matchup.

Matt Caddell
But the end of the match, I want to see which I can’t wait to see will be the dolphin sees to mahomes I think that’s gonna be like sling that’s gonna be like, it’s gonna be like back office, especially tools on the like, winning streak, and they have been everybody else and he’s just writing it up. That is a game. I want to see. Matt. I

Yeah. Yeah, let’s do it. I think it’s like week 12 or 13.

I think so. Yeah, I think I think my blues week 13. So I’ll definitely put that my calendar to watch the closely and probably Now watch redzone instead. For Pittsburgh Steelers, players got into the COVID list, including Ben Roethlisberger. There ain’t no Matt. The plan the Jags next. Do you think they’ll be nine to now or eight in one after this weekend?

Matt Caddell
No, I think they’ll win. You know, I think Ben was going to play even though he was a little banged up. I think he’s had some medical tests since he tested positive. So you know, I think there’ll be not enough. And I think there’ll be 10. And so I think it’s going to come down to, you know, one of those divisional rivals, whether it’s the Ravens, or, you know, I don’t know if they play the chiefs, that’s going to be one of the teams that probably, you know, maybe give them a bonus but, you know, shocking Sunday with the the Cowboys with Garrett Gilbert at the quarter at the helm. You know,

This is interesting, but yeah, hey, but hey, like that fourth quarterback came to play. He’s like, Look, I mean, this is my time to shine. If I ever have a shot to be a NFL quarterback. I got to do it within. Like within this game. Yeah. So anyways, yeah. Anything else before we head into predictions? Anything else you want to bring up?

Um, I just, you know, I’m just excited, man, we got football, I think everybody’s, you know, kind of handling the COVID situation a lot better than what I imagined. So, you know, I’m just excited to get ready for Thanksgiving. So hopefully some

Yeah, and then watch some cowboys and, and, and your boy does Brian is with the Ravens Matt. Yeah. Which he was active this past weekend. But I think he played a few minutes. I don’t know if he played a lot. But I know he was active. He went to Brighton. He went to like unempioyed to practice squad for two days and then went, you know, straight active. So

I will say this. This is my last point. Ryan Clark did bring up a good point. He said Kyler Murray was at the Baltimore Ravens. They will be one of the top Super Bowl contenders. Instead, you know, since instead of Lamar Jackson, I thought though he’s very compelling. Kyler Murray, Oregon. Yeah. Because, you know, he’s such a great passer. He can run he can do it all. So I think that’s a valid point.

Do you think Lamar Jackson, like every team, I mean, like most teams have figured him out yet, already.

Matt Caddell
You know, I just think maybe, I think it’s part of that. And I think the way that they try to run their offense, they have to stretch the field with their receivers, they need to like, they have to stretch it with the passing game. I know, they try to run first, but sometimes you have to pass the run. And I think, you know, not just passing to the tight ends, you know, they’re gonna get covered. But if you just stretch the field, maybe with a Hollywood brown at the end of the game, you know, just keep some deep passes going, that’s gonna really open up their offense. Whereas last year, you know, they kind of took everybody by surprise during the regular season that nobody could stop him. But you know, he really lost in the playoffs. So I just think they have to pass the ball more downfield to really open up to having an effective offense.

And they’re not using much with like the running backs with DK Dobbins right they’re not using much Yeah,

Matt Caddell
yeah, they run the same like song replays but you know, I think they need to like sign up and shotgun and just you got to take shots at something you have to open up the defense because if not, they’re gonna stack the box cover the tight ends and really limit the mark Jackson as you can see what the Steelers do

we’ll see what happens with the Ravens because AFC is a lot going up up top with the Chiefs Titans bills and possibly elephants No, I’m kidding. It’s too much that’s too much x for the dolphins Yeah, you can put too much pressure on to the dolphins are looking good.
