The United States men’s national team advanced to the Gold Cup semifinals on Sunday with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Jamaica in the quarterfinals. It was Schalke striker Matthew Hoppe who grabbed the winner, heading home with pace in the 83rd minute for his first international goal.
It was a match where Jamaica were the sharper team for large stretches, but the U.S. improved as the match went on. Despite it not being pretty, they hung in there, competed hard and got the victory to advance to Thursday’s semifinal where they will face Qatar.
