The New York Giants will not pick up the fifth-year option for quarterback Daniel Jones, according to multiple reports, meaning the 2019 first-round pick will be entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2022.
New York did exercise the fifth-year option for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence on Thursday. The Giants drafted Jones with the No. 6 pick and Lawrence with the No. 17 pick in 2019.
With the decision to decline his option, the Giants avoided guaranteeing $22 million to Daniel in 2023, putting the ball in his court to justify an extension or moving on with a clean slate.
As expected, the @Giants are not picking up QB Daniel Jones’ fifth year option, according to a source with knowledge of the team’s plans. But if he plays well, obviously, chance to cash in with the franchise tag.
