Both LAFC and the Vancouver Whitecaps are interested in Italian superstar Giorgio Chiellini.
LAFC did not offer Chiellini a designated player contract, but a targeted allocation money-level deal, meaning it could pay him no more than $1.65 million in 2023. The sources did not specify whether or not the 37-year-old is still entertaining the offer.
The sources also said that the Vancouver Whitecaps are interested in Chiellini. The Whitecaps, who are led by Italian head coach Vanni Sartini, would have to acquire the MLS discovery rights to Chiellini from LAFC before they could sign him.
One of the most decorated players of his generation, Chiellini has been with Juventus since 2004. He’s made more than 550 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning Serie A nine times and twice finishing runner-up in the UEFA Champions League. He’s appeared 23 times in all competitions for Juve this season.
Chiellini has 116 career caps for Italy, tied for fifth-most in the country’s history. A veteran of two World Cups, he captained Italy to the Euro 2020 championship last summer and will retire from the international game after the country’s friendly against Argentina this summer.
