With the Toronto Blue Jays battling it out for a wild-card spot rather than the AL East title, the club on Wednesday fired manager Charlie Montoyo.
Montoyo, 56, signed a contract extension through the 2023 season in April, so the front office and ownership must believe a change is really necessary to cut bait so early in that extension. Montoyo was in the middle of his fourth season as Blue Jays manager.
