The Miami Dolphins are releasing veteran cornerback Byron Jones when the new league year begins on March 15, the team informed him on Tuesday according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
By designating Jones as a post-June 1 release, the Dolphins save $13.6 million in 2023, according to Spotrac. They will also take on $4.7 million in dead cap in 2023 and $10 million in 2024.
Jones’ release was expected somewhat after he tweeted on Feb. 25 that he was no longer able to run or jump due to injuries he sustained over the course of his eight-year NFL career:
The #Dolphins have informed CB Byron Jones that he will be released, per @AdamSchefter. The team will save $13.6M in cap space with the move.
Jones signed a 5-year, $82M deal with Miami in 2020, and was the highest-paid CB at the time.
Since then, he has 95 tackles, 14 passes… https://t.co/yc5YNWOl2Q pic.twitter.com/uWBWdUtAEE
