Giants Lions scrimmage
The Detroit Lions kick off its 2023 preseason schedule at home on Friday (Aug. 11) against the New York Giants at 7 p.m. ET. at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

The Lions and Giants have been doing joint practices ahead of their preseason game on Friday. It is expected that Detroit rests most of their starters while the Giants are expected to do the same, as both teams want to get a good look at prospects and players battling for a roster spot.

Lions: Newly-signed Teddy Bridgewater should be the starting quarterback with Nate Sudfeld and Adrian Martinez also seeing some game action. We’ll also likely see Jameson Williams, who’s suspended for the first six weeks of the regular season. Defensively, we’ll certainly not see Aidan Hutchinson as well as veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone.

For the Giants, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux could suit up but wide receiver, Jalin Hyatt should see some sun, as with center John Michael Schmitz who is projected to be the starting center. If Daniel Jones doesn’t go, New York will likely see Tyrod Taylor get to run this offense. we likely will not see much — if any — of Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, Darren Waller, and several of the defensive starters.

The Detroit Lions are +124 underdogs while the Giants are -148 favorites, while the spread has the Giants as three-point favorites.

Part of the reason why New York is the favorite is due to the fact that Tyrod Taylor will likely be one of the best backup quarterbacks this season. Taylor has been a starting quarterback in this league, and he should be able to have success in the preseason game.

Ultimately, I do have faith that Taylor will leave the game with a bit of a lead and the Giants’ defense will do enough to hold onto the win.

Jets Panthers scrimmage
The Carolina Panthers will host the New York Jets in Week 1 of the 2023 preseason at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

While Aaron Rodgers won’t play, fans can expect to see No. 1 pick Bryce Young make his debut with the Panthers. The Panthers will play some of their starters, coach Frank Reich said.

Jets running back Breece Hall is still recovering from his injury, so the backfield will be split between Zonovan Knight, Israel Abinakanda and Michael Carter. Abinaknda led the backfield last week with 27 yards and a touchdown.

The Panthers will see wide receiver Adam Thielen, tight end Hayden Hurst and others make their debuts this preseason.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Panthers are currently a -3.5 point favorite over the Jets, likely due to being the home team. The Jets are +150 Moneyline while the Panthers are -175.

Bieniemy situation
Eric Bieniemy’s voice is one of the clearer ones on the practice field. On his first day of training camp since joining the Washington Commanders, it wasn’t hard to understand his message.

“Let’s go!” Bieniemy shouted. “It’s work time.”

Bieniemy is now at work in his new job as Washington’s offensive coordinator, bringing a vocal approach and two Super Bowl rings to an organization that hasn’t won a playoff game in nearly two decades. It’s his chance to get out from under the shadows cast by Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid and prove he should be a head coach in the NFL, working under Ron Rivera and with unproven quarterback Sam Howell.

Falcons-Dolpins Preview
The Atlanta Falcons (0-0) are kicking off their preseason slate with a game against the Miami Dolphins (0-0) Friday at Hard Rock Stadium in south Florida.

The Falcons and Dolphins have held joint practices together for the past two days, leading up to their preseason openers.

The Dolphins are expected to play incumbent starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for a little bit and it will give Miami a chance to gain some rhythm on offense going into the season.

For the Falcons, second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder is expected to draw the start. Ridder started four games for the Falcons at the end of the 2022 season, throwing for 708 yards and two touchdowns across his appearances. Now, he looks to seize the starting quarterback job over backup Taylor Heinicke, who signed with the team last season.
