Xherdan Shaqiri became the first Major League Soccer (MLS) player to score at a European Championship with his goal for Switzerland against Scotland. Playing for the Chicago Fire, Shaqiri equalized the match to 1-1 with a curling left-footed shot from the edge of the area, capitalizing on a defensive error by Scotland. The goal was scored at RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne. Shaqiri, who joined the Fire in 2022 as their most expensive signing, has made 75 appearances, scoring 16 goals and providing 13 assists. Before his MLS career, he played for notable European clubs including Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and Liverpool. He has 123 caps and 31 goals for Switzerland. Switzerland had earlier defeated Hungary in their opening game of Euro 2024 and will conclude Group A against hosts Germany on June 23.
