The Premier League is joining a new legal challenge against FIFA for expanding the international football calendar, which they argue endangers player health. The European Leagues, including England’s professional leagues, and FIFPRO Europe are filing a complaint to the European Commission on competition law grounds. They are particularly concerned about the new 32-team men’s Club World Cup and the lack of formal consultation by FIFA. The Professional Footballers’ Association, part of FIFPRO Europe, is also involved, claiming that FIFA’s dual role as regulator and competition organizer creates a conflict of interest and constitutes an abuse of dominance under EU competition law.
