Roger Goodell: NFL Poised for 16-Game International Slate Within Five Years

Posted on May 21, 2025May 21, 2025 by Santiago Leon

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reaffirmed the league’s ambitious global expansion plans during a CNBC event this week, declaring that a 16-game international schedule is on the horizon — potentially within the next five years.

This vision aligns with remarks Goodell made last fall and reflects a key pillar of the NFL’s global strategy, which includes seven international games scheduled for the current season.

“International is an open market for us,” Goodell said. “We are excited about our potential.”

Global Growth Accelerates

The NFL’s push for international growth is further evident in the continued expansion of its Global Markets Program. As of this week, all 32 NFL teams now participate, with recent additions including:

  • Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, who have secured marketing rights in Canada
  • Tennessee Titans, who have been granted rights to Ireland

This brings the program’s reach to 21 international markets, enabling clubs to promote their brand, build fanbases, and activate sponsorship opportunities abroad.

The Future of International Football

A 16-game international slate would effectively mirror one full week of the regular season being played outside the U.S., a move that underscores the league’s commitment to growing its global footprint. While no exact timeline has been confirmed, Goodell’s consistent messaging indicates the plan is rapidly moving from concept to execution.

From games in London and Frankfurt to growing interest in new territories like Ireland and South America, the NFL is banking on international momentum to drive its next phase of growth.

As Goodell puts it, the league’s global strategy is not just experimental — it’s foundational.
