A Complete History of MLS All-Star Game Formats (1996–2025)

Posted on July 22, 2025July 22, 2025 by Santiago Leon

Since its launch in 1996, the MLS All-Star Game has undergone several format changes, reflecting the league’s growth and changing strategies. From traditional East vs. West matchups to international club showdowns and the fierce MLS vs. Liga MX All-Stars rivalry, the format of this annual event has adapted to keep fans engaged and showcase Major League Soccer’s top talent.

Below is a comprehensive look at how the MLS All-Star Game format has evolved over the years.

East vs. West Format (1996–2001, 2004)

In the early years, the MLS All-Star Game mirrored the structure of other major American sports leagues, pitting the Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference. This format helped introduce fans to top players across the league in a familiar style.

A brief return to this format occurred in 2004 due to scheduling conflicts with Real Madrid.

USA vs. World Format (1998)

In 1998, MLS experimented with a unique USA vs. World format, dividing All-Stars by nationality. American players faced off against international players in the league. Although innovative, the format was only used once.

MLS All-Stars vs. National Teams (2002–2003)

The early 2000s introduced exhibition-style games:

  • 2002: MLS All-Stars vs. the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT)
  • 2003: MLS All-Stars vs. Chivas (Mexico)

These years laid the groundwork for future international matchups.

MLS All-Stars vs. European Clubs (2005–2020, 2023)

From 2005 onward, MLS shifted focus toward competing with elite international clubs, attracting major names like:

  • Manchester United
  • Chelsea
  • Juventus
  • Bayern Munich
  • Arsenal

This era boosted MLS’s global profile and provided fans with marquee matchups each summer.

In 2023, MLS returned to this format with a high-profile game against Arsenal, showcasing international star power.

MLS vs. Liga MX All-Stars (2021–2022, 2024–2025)

One of the most exciting modern shifts came in 2021, with the introduction of the MLS All-Stars vs. Liga MX All-Stars format. Designed to tap into North America’s growing soccer rivalry, this format returned in 2022, 2024, and 2025.

These matchups added intensity and regional bragging rights, attracting strong fan interest from both U.S. and Mexican audiences.
