Boston Eyes WNBA Team as Connecticut Sun Near $325M Sale & Possible Relocation by 2027

The Connecticut Sun WNBA team could relocate to Boston by 2027, following a reported $325 million purchase agreement between the Mohegan Tribe and a group led by Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca. If finalized and approved by the WNBA’s Board of Governors, it would mark the highest sale price ever for a professional women’s sports team.

Pagliuca plans to invest an additional $100 million in a new practice facility in Boston. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey supports the move, emphasizing Boston’s basketball heritage and fan base.

While Boston has often been mentioned in WNBA expansion talks, teams in Portland, Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia are set to join the league first. This would be the second relocation for the Sun, who started as the Orlando Miracle in 1999 and moved to Connecticut in 2002.

Pagliuca confirmed his interest but noted the deal is not yet finalized and is contingent on league approval.
