Lou Holtz, the beloved and long-serving college football coach, has died. He was 89.
Holtz’s family confirmed his passing in a post to X, writing that he died in Orlando “surrounded by family.” A cause of death was not provided.
Born in Follansbee, West Virginia, in 1937, Holtz would spend five decades in college athletics. He led the programs at the College of William & Mary, North Carolina State, the University of Arkansas, the University of Minnesota, Notre Dame, and the University of South Carolina across 33 seasons. He also spent one season with the New York Jets.
