When Davante Adams was traded to the New York Jets in 2024, the No. 17 was already occupied by one of his new teammates. Rookie Malachi Corley picked that number after he was drafted in the third round, but considering Adams wore it his entire career up to that point, it’s no surprise he wanted to buy it off the young receiver.
On the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast, Adams revealed he brought a backpack filled with $17,000 in cash to the facility, which he was going to give to Corley for No. 17.
“I’m thinking, like, this ain’t nothing crazy,” Adams said. “But certainly, to give up your number as a rookie, like, you ain’t did s— yet. It was like Week 6 and I think he played four plays at that point. Like, you have no attachment to this right now. I’ll pay for your whole family to get new jerseys, because they go out and spend money on it. ‘However many jerseys you need me to buy, I’ll do that. And how about $17,000 for the number 17?”
