Colorado State defensive coordinator Tyson Summers is no longer with the program following the Rams’ 56-26 loss to Oregon State.
During the first half, first-year head coach Jim Mora removed Summers from defensive playcalling duties, replacing him with assistant Kenny McClendon. Summers then chose to leave the sideline on his own. Mora emphasized that he did not order Summers to leave and confirmed after the game that the separation was permanent.
The move comes amid major defensive struggles for Colorado State. The Rams, now 2-3, have surrendered 193 points through five games (38.6 points per game), including 59 points against UTSA the previous week and 56 against Oregon State.
Summers had remained on the Colorado State staff after serving as interim head coach for the final five games of last season following Jay Norvell’s departure. He has more than 20 years of coaching experience, including stops at Florida, Georgia and Colorado.
