Luke Kuechly retired from the NFL on January 14, 2020, bringing an abrupt end to one of the most dominant defensive careers of his generation.
The longtime Carolina Panthers linebacker was only 28 years old when he announced his retirement after the 2019 NFL season. Kuechly spent his entire eight-year NFL career with Carolina after the Panthers selected him with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Kuechly never framed his retirement as being caused exclusively by concussions.
However, his concussion history was well documented and contributed to concerns about his long-term health during his playing career. He missed games after suffering concussions and was visibly emotional following a particularly frightening head injury against the New Orleans Saints in 2016.
When announcing his retirement, Kuechly emphasized that he believed stepping away was the correct decision rather than pointing to one specific injury as the reason.
Did Luke Kuechly Ever Return to the NFL?
No. Kuechly never returned as an NFL player after retiring.
He did, however, remain involved with the Panthers. Carolina hired Kuechly as a pro scout in 2020, allowing him to evaluate players and remain around the organization following his playing career.
