Steelers to Start Will Howard vs. Jets as Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph Sit

Posted on August 19, 2026August 19, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The Pittsburgh Steelers will give their young quarterbacks an opportunity to lead the offense in Friday night’s matchup against the New York Jets.

Head coach Mike McCarthy announced Wednesday that second-year quarterback Will Howard will start the game. Rookie Drew Allar is expected to take over afterward.

Veteran quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph will not play against New York. Their absence gives Pittsburgh’s coaching staff an extended look at two developing players competing for roles in the Steelers’ quarterback room.

Will Howard Gets the Start Against the Jets

Howard enters the matchup with a chance to demonstrate his command of the offense and growth entering his second season. Starting against the Jets should provide him with valuable experience working with Pittsburgh’s offensive personnel in a game setting.

His performance could also help the Steelers evaluate their depth behind Rodgers and Rudolph.

Rookie Drew Allar Set to Follow Howard

Allar will receive his own opportunity after Howard’s appearance. The rookie quarterback will look to make a positive early impression as he adjusts to the speed and demands of the professional game.

Although McCarthy did not specify how the available snaps will be divided, both young quarterbacks should have meaningful chances to operate the Steelers’ offense.

Rodgers and Rudolph Rested

Holding Rodgers and Rudolph out allows Pittsburgh to protect its veteran quarterbacks while focusing on player evaluation. Rodgers is expected to lead the offense, while Rudolph provides the team with an experienced backup option.

Friday’s Steelers-Jets matchup will therefore center on Howard and Allar as Pittsburgh continues assessing its younger quarterback talent.
