Dabo Swinney Clemson Buyout: How Much Would It Cost to Fire Him?

Posted on September 6, 2026September 6, 2026 by Santiago Leon

Dabo Swinney has one of the largest and most unusual contract buyouts in college football.

The longtime Clemson head coach signed a massive contract extension in 2022 that keeps him under contract with the Tigers through the 2031 season.

So, how much would it cost Clemson to fire Dabo Swinney?

Clemson would owe Dabo Swinney $57 million if the university fired him without cause during the 2026 season. Beginning in 2027, however, the buyout changes to the remaining total compensation on his contract, meaning Clemson could owe approximately $60 million if it waited until 2027 to make a coaching change.

That unusual contract structure means firing Swinney could actually become more expensive after the 2026 season.

Here is everything to know about Dabo Swinney’s Clemson contract, buyout, salary and the unusual Alabama clause included in his deal.

What Is Dabo Swinney’s Buyout at Clemson?

Dabo Swinney’s buyout is $57 million if Clemson fires him without cause during the 2026 season.

The amount comes from the 10-year contract extension Swinney signed with Clemson in September 2022.

Under the agreement, Clemson’s buyout for terminating Swinney without cause was structured as follows:

YearClemson Owes Swinney
2022$64 million
2023$64 million
2024$60 million
2025$60 million
2026$57 million
2027Remaining total compensation
2028Remaining total compensation
2029Remaining total compensation
2030Remaining total compensation
2031Remaining total compensation

The key year is 2026 because it is the final season in which Clemson’s obligation is based on a predetermined flat buyout amount.

Beginning in 2027, Clemson would instead owe Swinney the remaining compensation specified under his contract.

How Much Would It Cost Clemson to Fire Dabo Swinney in 2026?

It would cost Clemson $57 million to fire Dabo Swinney without cause during the 2026 season.

That would represent an enormous financial commitment simply to move on from its head coach.

The $57 million payment would also come before Clemson hired and began paying Swinney’s replacement.

Swinney’s contract allows Clemson to make the required payments on a regular schedule over the remaining term of the agreement or pay the amount in full within 90 days of termination.

Another important provision makes the buyout particularly expensive for Clemson.

Swinney’s contract does not require mitigation.

That means Clemson’s financial obligation would not necessarily be reduced if Swinney took another coaching job after being fired.

Could Dabo Swinney’s Buyout Increase in 2027?

Surprisingly, yes.

Waiting until 2027 could initially make firing Swinney more expensive.

The predetermined $57 million buyout applies during 2026. Starting in 2027, Clemson would owe the remaining total compensation under Swinney’s contract.

Based on his scheduled compensation, that would leave approximately $60 million remaining entering 2027.

The approximate remaining amounts would then decline significantly as Swinney approaches the end of the contract.

YearApproximate Clemson Buyout
2026$57 million
2027$60 million
2028$48.5 million
2029$37 million
2030$25 million
2031$12.5 million

Therefore, Clemson could theoretically save approximately $3 million by firing Swinney during 2026 rather than waiting until 2027.

The amount then begins declining considerably as the contract approaches its expiration.

How Long Is Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Contract?

Dabo Swinney is under contract with Clemson through the 2031 college football season.

Clemson announced a new 10-year, $115 million agreement with Swinney in September 2022.

The deal made Swinney one of the highest-paid coaches in college football and represented Clemson’s long-term commitment to the coach who transformed the Tigers into a national championship program.

The contract runs through December 31, 2031.

How Much Does Dabo Swinney Make at Clemson?

Dabo Swinney is scheduled to make $11.5 million during the 2026 season.

His compensation gradually increases during the remaining years of the agreement.

SeasonDabo Swinney Compensation
2026$11.5 million
2027$11.5 million
2028$11.75 million
2029$12 million
2030$12.25 million
2031$12.5 million

The original contract was worth approximately $115 million over 10 years.

Swinney can also earn additional money through performance incentives tied to accomplishments such as conference championships, College Football Playoff appearances and national championships.

What Is the Alabama Clause in Dabo Swinney’s Contract?

One of the most interesting provisions in Swinney’s contract is commonly known as the “Alabama clause.”

This provision applies if Swinney voluntarily leaves Clemson to become the head coach at Alabama.

Swinney has significant ties to Alabama.

He played wide receiver for the Crimson Tide and later began his coaching career at the university.

Because of those connections, Clemson included a provision requiring Swinney to pay more if he leaves for Alabama than if he takes another college head coaching position.

For 2026, Swinney would owe:

  • $3 million if he leaves Clemson for another college head coaching position.
  • $4.5 million if he leaves Clemson to become Alabama’s head coach.

The Alabama penalty is 1.5 times the amount Swinney would owe for leaving for another college program.

How Much Would Dabo Swinney Owe Clemson If He Leaves?

The financial situation is very different if Swinney decides to leave Clemson voluntarily.

His employee buyout decreases as his contract approaches its expiration.

YearOther CollegeAlabama
2026$3 million$4.5 million
2027$3 million$4.5 million
2028$2 million$3 million
2029$2 million$3 million
2030$1 million$1.5 million
2031$0$0

Therefore, there is an important distinction when discussing Swinney’s buyout.

If Clemson fires Swinney, Clemson owes him tens of millions of dollars.

If Swinney voluntarily leaves for another college head coaching job, Swinney owes Clemson a much smaller amount.

Would Dabo Swinney Owe Clemson If He Leaves for the NFL?

Swinney’s contract also includes an interesting exception for the NFL.

Swinney would not owe Clemson a buyout if he left to become an NFL head coach.

The employee buyout provisions primarily apply if Swinney terminates his Clemson contract early to accept another college head coaching position.

That makes an NFL departure financially different from Swinney leaving Clemson for another university.

When Does Dabo Swinney’s Contract End?

Dabo Swinney’s Clemson contract runs through December 31, 2031.

Unless the contract is extended, terminated or Swinney voluntarily leaves before then, the agreement covers the Tigers through the 2031 college football season.

Because Swinney’s salary increases toward the end of the agreement, Clemson still has a significant amount of guaranteed compensation remaining on the contract.

Perhaps even more remarkably, waiting until 2027 could increase the obligation to approximately $60 million because the contract switches from a predetermined buyout to the remaining total compensation.

The amount begins declining after 2027 as Swinney moves closer to the end of his contract in 2031.

Regardless of when Clemson might consider making a change, Swinney’s contract ensures that moving on from the most successful coach in program history would carry a significant financial cost.
