What Happens if Broncos Win, Tie or Lose vs Chiefs? NFL Week 1 AFC West Impact

Posted on September 14, 2026September 14, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The Denver Broncos visit the Kansas City Chiefs tonight, Monday, September 14, 2026, in a major AFC West matchup on Monday Night Football.

Denver and Kansas City both enter the game 0-0, making tonight the season opener for both AFC West rivals. Kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium is scheduled for 8:15 PM ET / 7:15 PM CT.

Although a Week 1 result cannot clinch or eliminate either team from the playoffs, the game carries additional importance because it is a division matchup.

A Broncos victory would immediately give Denver an important road win over an AFC West rival, while a loss would give Kansas City the early advantage in the season series.

Here is what happens if the Broncos win, tie or lose against the Chiefs tonight.

What Happens if the Broncos Beat the Chiefs?

If the Broncos beat the Chiefs, Denver will improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the AFC West.

Kansas City would fall to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the division.

Denver would also earn an important head-to-head victory over Kansas City, which could become significant later in the season if the Broncos and Chiefs finish with identical records.

The Broncos would join the Las Vegas Raiders at 1-0 among the early leaders in the AFC West.

A victory would give Denver:

Overall Record: 1-0
AFC West Record: 1-0
Record vs Chiefs: 1-0
Playoff Status: Not clinched
Division Status: Early advantage over Kansas City

Winning at Arrowhead Stadium would be an especially valuable start for Denver because it would combine a road victory, division victory and head-to-head victory in one result.

What Happens if the Broncos and Chiefs Tie?

If the Broncos and Chiefs tie, both teams will move to 0-0-1.

Denver and Kansas City would also have 0-0-1 records within the AFC West.

Neither team would earn the full head-to-head advantage from the first meeting of the season.

A tie would leave Denver with:

Overall Record: 0-0-1
AFC West Record: 0-0-1
Record vs Chiefs: 0-0-1
Playoff Status: Not clinched or eliminated

For NFL standings purposes, ties are included when calculating winning percentage.

The result could become significant later in the season if the AFC West or AFC playoff races are decided by narrow margins.

What Happens if the Broncos Lose to the Chiefs?

If the Broncos lose to the Chiefs, Denver will fall to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the AFC West.

Kansas City would improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the division.

The Chiefs would also take a 1-0 head-to-head advantage over Denver entering the second meeting of the season.

A loss would leave Denver with:

Overall Record: 0-1
AFC West Record: 0-1
Record vs Chiefs: 0-1
Playoff Status: Not eliminated
Division Status: Kansas City owns early head-to-head advantage

Denver would begin the season behind the 1-0 Raiders and 1-0 Chiefs in the AFC West.

However, with 16 regular-season games remaining, a Week 1 defeat would not put Denver in an elimination situation.

Can the Broncos Be Eliminated From the Playoffs if They Lose Tonight?

No. The Broncos cannot be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to the Chiefs in Week 1.

Denver would simply begin the 2026 NFL season with an 0-1 record.

The Broncos would still have 16 regular-season games remaining to compete for the AFC West championship or one of the AFC’s Wild Card playoff spots.

The biggest immediate consequence would be falling behind Kansas City in the division standings, division record and head-to-head series.

Can the Broncos Clinch Anything With a Win?

No. The Broncos cannot clinch the AFC West or a playoff berth by beating Kansas City tonight.

It is only Week 1 of the regular season.

However, a Broncos victory would provide an important early advantage because Denver would have defeated a division opponent on the road.

Head-to-head and division records can become important NFL tiebreakers when teams finish the regular season with identical records.

Why Is Broncos vs Chiefs Important for the AFC West?

Broncos vs Chiefs is important because both teams compete in the AFC West alongside the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers.

The Raiders already opened the season with a victory, while the Chargers started 0-1.

Denver therefore has an opportunity to move to 1-0 and join Las Vegas among the early AFC West leaders.

A Broncos victory would also push Kansas City to 0-1 and give Denver the first victory in the two-game season series.

The Chiefs and Broncos are scheduled to meet again on November 1, 2026, in Denver.

If Denver wins both meetings, the Broncos would complete a season sweep of Kansas City and own a major head-to-head advantage if the teams eventually require a divisional tiebreaker.

Broncos vs Chiefs Win, Tie or Loss Scenarios

If Broncos Win: Denver moves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the AFC West.

If Broncos Tie: Denver moves to 0-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the AFC West.

If Broncos Lose: Denver falls to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the AFC West.

No outcome tonight will clinch or eliminate Denver from playoff contention.

The biggest immediate impact is on the AFC West standings, division record and head-to-head series against Kansas City.

What Time Is Broncos vs Chiefs Tonight?

Fans should tune in before the scheduled 8:15 PM ET kickoff for pregame coverage.

What Is at Stake for the Broncos Tonight?

The Broncos are not facing a must-win situation in Week 1, but defeating Kansas City would provide Denver with an excellent start to the 2026 NFL season.

A Broncos win means a 1-0 overall record, a 1-0 AFC West record and an early head-to-head advantage against Kansas City.

A tie would put Denver at 0-0-1 and leave the season series undecided heading into the second meeting.

A Broncos loss would drop Denver to 0-1 and give Kansas City the early advantage in both the AFC West standings and head-to-head series.

With an entire regular season ahead, tonight’s result will not determine Denver’s playoff fate. However, earning a road division victory over the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium could prove extremely valuable later in the 2026 AFC West race.
