Bills New Highmark Stadium Capacity vs. Old Stadium: How Many Fans Does It Hold?

Posted on September 17, 2026September 17, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The Buffalo Bills have officially moved into their new Highmark Stadium, giving the franchise a modern home in Orchard Park, New York. However, one of the biggest differences between the new stadium and the Bills’ former venue is the number of fans it can hold.

What Is the New Highmark Stadium Capacity?

The new Highmark Stadium has an official seating capacity of 60,108 fans.

Additional standing-room configurations can increase the number of people inside the stadium for certain events, with the venue designed to potentially accommodate roughly 63,000 fans.

Despite being significantly more expensive and technologically advanced than its predecessor, the new stadium was intentionally designed with fewer seats.

What Was the Old Highmark Stadium Capacity?

The Bills’ former Highmark Stadium had a capacity of approximately 71,608 fans during its final years.

The stadium originally opened in 1973 as Rich Stadium and served as the Bills’ home for more than five decades. It was later known as Ralph Wilson Stadium, New Era Field, Bills Stadium and Highmark Stadium.

New Highmark Stadium vs. Old Highmark Stadium Capacity

Here is the basic capacity comparison:

StadiumCapacity
New Highmark Stadium60,108
Old Highmark Stadium71,608
Difference11,500 fewer seats

That means the new Bills stadium has approximately 11,500 fewer permanent seats, representing a reduction of roughly 16% compared with the old venue.

Even if the new stadium reaches approximately 63,000 spectators with standing-room areas, it would still accommodate fewer people than the former Highmark Stadium.

Why Is the New Bills Stadium Smaller?

The smaller capacity reflects a broader trend in modern NFL stadium construction. Instead of maximizing the number of seats, newer venues often dedicate more space to premium seating, clubs, suites, wider concourses, improved concessions and other fan amenities.

The new Highmark Stadium also features a canopy designed to cover a significant portion of the seating bowl while still maintaining the outdoor atmosphere traditionally associated with Bills football in Western New York.

The design places greater emphasis on the overall game-day experience rather than simply fitting as many spectators as possible into the building.

Is the New Highmark Stadium a Dome?

No. The new Highmark Stadium is not a dome.

The Bills will continue playing in an open-air stadium, meaning Buffalo’s famous cold temperatures, wind and snow can still become factors during late-season games.

The canopy provides considerably more protection for spectators than the previous stadium, but the playing field remains exposed to the elements.

Where Is the New Highmark Stadium?

The new Highmark Stadium is located in Orchard Park, New York, near the site of the Bills’ previous stadium.

Keeping the franchise in Orchard Park allows the Bills to maintain their long-established connection to the location while providing fans with a substantially upgraded NFL venue.

When Did the Buffalo Bills Start Playing at the New Highmark Stadium?

The 2026 NFL season marks the Buffalo Bills’ first season at the new Highmark Stadium.

The stadium represents one of the biggest changes in franchise history after the Bills spent more than 50 years playing at their previous Orchard Park venue.

Final Comparison

The biggest number to remember is 60,108 vs. 71,608.

The new Highmark Stadium holds 60,108 seated fans, compared with approximately 71,608 at the old Highmark Stadium, resulting in about 11,500 fewer permanent seats.

While the new stadium is smaller in terms of seating capacity, it was designed to provide a more modern NFL experience with improved amenities, premium spaces, weather protection and updated infrastructure.

For Bills fans accustomed to crowds of more than 70,000 in Orchard Park, the new stadium will feel different — but it begins a new era for one of the NFL’s most passionate fan bases.
