San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans is pushing to play in Week 4 despite a rib injury, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Evans was able to practice late in the week and told the team he will do his best to be available for Sunday’s matchup against the Denver Broncos at Levi’s Stadium.
The 49ers have expressed optimism about his status, though tight end George Kittle offered a blunt assessment of the injury: “Fractured ribs suck.” Evans remains officially questionable and is expected to be a game-time decision ahead of the 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff.
How Mike Evans Suffered the Rib Injury
Evans exited the 49ers’ Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals in the second quarter after a hit in the rib area. He finished that game with three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown before being ruled out at halftime and carted to the locker room. Coach Kyle Shanahan later described the issue as a rib/oblique injury and indicated it was not expected to be long-term.
Evans later explained the pain, saying on the play where he left the field it “felt like somebody stabbed me in my chest.” He missed Wednesday and Thursday practices before logging a limited session on Friday. The veteran has played through similar discomfort before and plans to use a padded compression shirt rather than a traditional flak jacket.
49ers Outlook and Evans’ 2026 Role
Evans signed a three-year contract worth up to $60.4 million with San Francisco in free agency after 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Through three games in 2026 he has 12 receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. The 49ers entered Week 4 at 3-0 but have dealt with multiple injuries at receiver and along the offensive line.
Shanahan has called Evans a game-time decision, and general manager John Lynch has said the receiver “will make every attempt” to play. Evans himself framed the decision simply: “It’s my job. I take pride in trying to suit up every chance I get.”
Fantasy Football and Betting Impact
Evans is viewed as a risky WR2 or flex option in fantasy lineups because of the late kickoff window and true game-time status. If he is inactive, targets are expected to concentrate among Deebo Samuel, Jordan Watkins, and George Kittle. Betting markets have been cautious, with limited receiving props available until his official status is confirmed roughly 90 minutes before kickoff.
The Broncos (2-1) present a physical secondary, so Evans’ ability to win contested catches and operate in the red zone will be limited if the rib injury restricts his movement or breathing. The 49ers’ next game after Week 4 is on the road against the Seattle Seahawks, giving the team limited rest before another tough NFC West matchup.
Fans and fantasy managers should monitor the inactive list closer to the 4:25 p.m. ET start. Evans’ history of playing through pain makes his availability plausible, but fractured ribs remain a painful limitation regardless of the team’s optimism.
