The New York Giants have made a significant quarterback decision heading into Week 7. According to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the team plans to start J.J. McCarthy this Sunday against the Houston Texans.
This marks a notable shift for a Giants squad sitting at 3-2-1 and currently atop the NFC East, even after losing original starter Jaxson Dart to a season-ending knee injury earlier in the year.
How J.J. McCarthy Arrived in New York
The Giants acquired McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, from the Minnesota Vikings in late September via a trade that sent a 2027 fifth-round pick to Minnesota. The move came shortly after Dart’s injury left New York relying on veteran Jameis Winston as the starter.
McCarthy, a former Michigan standout known for his athleticism and winning pedigree in college, had struggled to secure a consistent role in Minnesota behind other options. The Giants viewed him as high-upside depth who could potentially develop into a longer-term solution.
The Saints Game That Changed Everything
McCarthy’s case for the starting job strengthened dramatically in Week 6 against the New Orleans Saints. With the Giants trailing 34-10 in the fourth quarter, coach John Harbaugh inserted McCarthy after Winston threw his second interception of the game.
In limited action, McCarthy completed 11 of 21 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also led the team in rushing with 26 yards on the ground. His production in roughly 11 minutes of play was historically productive—one of the highest single-quarter yardage totals in recent Giants history.
McCarthy helped engineer three consecutive scoring drives that cut the deficit to 34-27, nearly completing an improbable comeback before a final drive fell short. Harbaugh later praised the performance given the circumstances.
Why the Giants Are Turning to McCarthy Now
Harbaugh had previously indicated the team was still evaluating the quarterback situation, but the decision to start McCarthy against Houston suggests the coaching staff is ready to ride the hot hand. Winston had gone 2-1-1 in his starts, yet turnover issues and limited explosiveness opened the door.
McCarthy’s mobility offers a different dimension that fits well with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s scheme. His ability to extend plays and create with his legs was evident against the Saints and could provide a spark against Houston’s defense.
Looking Ahead: Giants vs. Texans
The matchup takes place Sunday, October 25, at 1:00 p.m. ET in Houston. The Texans enter at 2-4 after winning their last two games, including a narrow victory over the Jaguars in London. They have been competitive offensively but face a Giants team motivated to solidify its NFC East lead.
A strong outing from McCarthy could lock him in as the starter moving forward, especially with a bye week following this game that would give him additional time to prepare. For Giants fans, this represents a high-upside bet on a young former first-round pick after Winston’s recent struggles.
The decision also highlights the franchise’s willingness to be aggressive at the position while Dart recovers. Whether McCarthy can sustain the production he showed in relief remains the key question heading into Sunday.
