Chicago Fire Nearing Deal with Former USMNT Coach Gregg Berhalter for Head Coach and CSO Roles

Posted on September 20, 2024September 20, 2024 by Santiago Leon

Chicago Fire FC is reportedly close to finalizing a deal with former U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) head coach Gregg Berhalter, according to local Chicago press. Berhalter is expected to take on the dual roles of head coach and Chief Soccer Officer (CSO) next year, granting him full control over the team’s soccer operations.

While the agreement is not yet official, sources indicate that discussions between the Fire and Berhalter have been ongoing for several weeks. If finalized, this move would bring Berhalter’s tactical acumen and leadership experience to a Chicago Fire team eager to revamp its competitive edge in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Before his tenure with the USMNT, Berhalter was the head coach of the Columbus Crew from 2013 to 2018, where he consistently demonstrated his ability to build competitive teams. Under his leadership, the Crew reached the MLS playoffs four times in five years, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s top coaching talents.

Berhalter’s most recent coaching stint with the USMNT was marked by significant successes and challenges. He led the national team to a 44-17-13 record, capturing titles in both the Nations League and the Gold Cup. However, his time with the national squad came to an end on July 10, 2024, after the team’s disappointing early exit from the 2024 Copa America during the group stage.

Chicago Fire fans and analysts alike are watching closely as the deal develops, hopeful that Berhalter’s arrival could signal a new era for the club. His potential appointment would mark a significant shift in the Fire’s management structure, giving him unprecedented authority to shape the team’s roster, strategy, and overall direction.

If Berhalter is indeed confirmed, his experience and proven track record in MLS and international competitions could provide the Fire with the leadership and vision needed to become a perennial playoff contender once again.
