Tim Howard Criticizes Christian Pulisic’s Departure from USMNT Camp Ahead of Mexico Match

Posted on October 17, 2024October 17, 2024 by Santiago Leon

USMNT legend Tim Howard has voiced his frustration with Christian Pulisic’s decision to leave the national team camp ahead of their highly anticipated match against Mexico. Pulisic, who left to manage his workload and rejoin AC Milan, has faced criticism for his absence during what Howard calls a critical moment for the national team.

“Pulisic is our biggest player, our best player,” Howard said, emphasizing the significance of the camp, which marked the start of the USMNT’s preparation for the 2026 World Cup under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino. “No one can question his commitment to the USMNT, and no one can deny that he needs to look after his body. But even if he’s not playing, he should still be there—to create the culture and set an example.”

Drawing on his own experience as a senior player for the USMNT, Howard reflected on the importance of leadership beyond the field. “I have been a senior player and a big personality in the locker room. I demanded a lot from people, and what I found is that the moments to show your gravitas tend to come off the pitch,” he said.

Howard shared anecdotes from his own career, where even with over 100 caps for the national team, he performed small but meaningful tasks, such as carrying water or picking up gear in the locker room, while younger players rested after matches. “They were small gestures that carried an important message: when we’re in deep, and I’m demanding something of you, it’s nothing I wouldn’t do myself,” he explained. “That’s what makes a good leader. That’s when you build trust and culture—not by leaving camp, but by supporting the team with words and actions.”

Howard also pointed out that at some point, Pulisic, the USMNT, and the player’s club, AC Milan, must come to a mutual understanding regarding his participation with the national team. “Pulisic needs to be there, whether to play or just to be around. At some point, Pochettino, Pulisic, and the USA have to flex their muscles and tell Milan: This is how it’s going to go down.”

While Howard acknowledged that managing Pulisic’s workload is important, he stressed that his presence with the team, especially during such pivotal moments, is vital for building a strong team culture and setting an example for the younger players on the roster.
