Women’s World Cup expanding to 48-team tournament for 2031 Women’s World Cup

Posted on May 10, 2025 by Santiago Leon

FIFA has approved a plan to expand the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams starting with the 2031 tournament, which will be hosted by the United States. This move mirrors the men’s World Cup expansion set for 2026 and aims to boost global participation and development in women’s football. FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the goal of using the expansion to help more national associations grow their women’s programs.

The 2027 Women’s World Cup will still feature 32 teams and be hosted by Brazil. FIFPRO welcomed the expansion in principle but stressed the need for improved labor conditions, inclusive decision-making, and sustainable development throughout the sport.

The expansion offers commercial upside, including increased revenue from sponsorships, broadcasting, and ticket sales, but also raises concerns about competitive balance, hosting logistics, and readiness at the youth levels. The proposal is widely expected to move forward despite potential challenges, with ongoing pressure on FIFA to ensure equitable investment and governance in the women’s game.
