J.J. Watt’s Sports Team Ownership: Burnley F.C. and RCD Espanyol

Posted on September 20, 2025 by Santiago Leon

J.J. Watt, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and future Hall of Famer, has transitioned from dominating on the football field to making moves in the global sports ownership arena. Alongside his wife, Kealia Watt, a former U.S. Women’s National Team soccer player, Watt has invested in professional soccer clubs in both England and Spain.

Burnley F.C. – Premier League Stake

In May 2023, Watt and his wife announced they had become minority investors in Burnley F.C., a storied English club currently competing in the Premier League. The investment marked Watt’s first official step into European football ownership.

Burnley’s history and passionate fan base made it an appealing opportunity. Watt has been outspoken about embracing the culture, attending matches, and connecting with supporters. His presence has helped boost the club’s visibility, particularly among American fans who now follow Burnley more closely.

RCD Espanyol – La Liga Expansion

Not long after joining Burnley, Watt extended his sports ownership portfolio into Spain’s La Liga. He became part of the group acquiring RCD Espanyol, a Barcelona-based club with over 120 years of tradition.

The move demonstrates Watt’s belief in soccer’s global growth potential. By investing in both the English and Spanish leagues, he has aligned himself with two of the most competitive football ecosystems in the world.

Why Watt Chose Soccer

Watt has explained that his interest in soccer ownership comes from both his wife’s career in the sport and his recognition of soccer’s international reach. While American football dominates the U.S., soccer has unmatched global popularity, offering Watt the chance to connect with fans across continents.

The Bigger Picture

Watt’s ownership stakes in Burnley F.C. and RCD Espanyol highlight a growing trend of American athletes investing in soccer clubs. With stars like LeBron James (Liverpool F.C.) and Tom Brady (Birmingham City), Watt joins a powerful wave of U.S. athletes expanding their influence overseas.

For Watt, the move is about more than finances—it’s about legacy, community, and global connection. Whether on the field or in the boardroom, Watt continues to make an impact.
