The MLS Cup Playoffs Conference Semifinals mark one of the most intense rounds of the postseason — where every second counts and only one team moves on. Under the league’s current format, this round is a single-game elimination match, meaning there’s no second leg or aggregate score. One game. One winner. One step closer to the MLS Cup.
How the Format Works
Starting with the 2023 playoff redesign, Major League Soccer shifted to a format where only the first round features a best-of-three series. Once teams advance to the Conference Semifinals, the rules change:
- Single-Game Elimination: Each matchup is decided in one match only.
- Host Advantage: The higher-seeded team from the regular season hosts the game.
- Tiebreakers: If the score is tied after 90 minutes, the teams play two 15-minute extra-time periods. If the deadlock continues, the match goes to penalty kicks to decide the winner.
This setup creates a thrilling, high-stakes environment where one mistake or one moment of brilliance can end or extend a season.
Why MLS Adopted This Format
The league’s goal is to balance fairness, intensity, and fan excitement. By limiting the semifinals to one game, MLS ensures that every round feels like a true knockout event — much like the UEFA Champions League final stages or NFL playoffs. The format rewards teams that performed well in the regular season with home-field advantage while keeping matches unpredictable and dramatic.
When and Where the 2025 Conference Semifinals Take Place
The 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs Conference Semifinals are set for late November, following the conclusion of the first-round series. Matches are hosted by the higher seed in each conference, meaning supporters will pack stadiums from Los Angeles to Cincinnati for one-night-only showdowns that determine who advances to the Conference Finals.
Key Takeaways
- Round Type: Single-game elimination
- Host: Higher-seeded team
- Tiebreakers: Extra time + penalty shootout if needed
- Importance: Winners advance to the Conference Finals; losers are eliminated immediately
Final Thoughts
The MLS Cup Playoffs’ single-elimination semifinals embody everything that makes soccer in North America exciting — intensity, unpredictability, and passion. With no margin for error, teams must bring their best tactics, fitness, and mental toughness. As fans gear up for the 2025 postseason, one thing’s certain: the Conference Semifinals will once again deliver must-watch drama on every pitch.
