The NFL’s international growth is accelerating at record speed. After completing a historic seven-game international slate in 2025—including a debut matchup in Spain—the league is preparing for an even larger global presence in 2026. Commissioner Roger Goodell revealed that several new markets are under consideration, as the NFL continues drawing major interest from cities around the world eager to host games.
NFL to Debut in Australia and Rio de Janeiro in 2026
One of the most anticipated additions to the global schedule is Australia. The Los Angeles Rams are set to host a yet-to-be-named opponent in Melbourne, marking the NFL’s first-ever game on Australian soil. Goodell called it the league’s “big learning test,” signaling that the Australia debut will help shape the NFL’s future ambitions in the Asia-Pacific region.
Brazil will also gain another spotlight event. After a successful game in São Paulo, the league will expand by hosting a game in Rio de Janeiro, making it the second Brazilian city to welcome the NFL.
NFL Planning Up to Nine International Games Next Season
Goodell stated that the NFL is “close” to finalizing plans that could amount to as many as nine international games in 2026. This would surpass the current single-season record and aligns with a larger league strategy: expanding international games to 16 per season in the coming years.
The NFL’s 2025 international lineup included:
- Brazil
- Ireland
- England
- Germany
- Spain
These locations delivered strong attendance, high broadcast numbers, and increased local market engagement, encouraging the league to keep expanding.
New Cities Expressing Strong Interest
According to Goodell, one consequence of the NFL’s global success is that “many other cities are reaching out” and requesting games. While the NFL has not publicly confirmed which new markets are being evaluated, league officials are actively exploring additional destinations to add to the 2026 schedule.
NFL Confirms Return to Spain
After an enthusiastic crowd of 78,610 fans filled Santiago Bernabéu Stadium for the Dolphins-Commanders matchup, Goodell confirmed that the league will return to Spain in future seasons. The inaugural Spanish game was widely considered a milestone success.
What This Means for the NFL’s Global Strategy
The NFL’s aggressive expansion reflects its long-term ambition to increase international fanbases, strengthen international media rights, and potentially support future globally based franchises. Countries across Europe, South America, and the Asia-Pacific region are already signaling interest in hosting games or multiyear partnerships.
As the league pushes toward a 16-game international slate, 2026 could become the NFL’s most globally significant season in history.
