Now it’s time to introduce the man who could single handedly take down john cena is the reason for former sec quarterbacks having night tears. And he’s an accomplished author Marvin constant.

Marvin Constant
A bow tie. tide.

Justin Riley
Roll Tide. It gets

Marvin Constant
pleasure, Justin. Thank you, man.

Justin Riley
honor God wait to man. Pretty excited about this, especially the guests we have coming up.

Marvin Constant
Justin, I don’t think you understand the level of fun we’re about to have tonight. I don’t know.

Justin Riley
I do understand because guys, like we have on tonight, or while I’m doing this. Especially

Marvin Constant
understand just

Unknown Speaker
listen. No, you listen,

Marvin Constant
that I have on today. Do you see the background? I gotta pay homage to these two fellas. Nightmare,

Justin Riley
man and you’re doing it but before we get Those guys as exciting as we are, first of all, man, let’s talk about your book, man. We’ve seen that the promo videos, yeah, we’ve seen the the pictures, and now the books are rolling out, tell me about what’s going on with the book

Marvin Constant
book is doing amazing, actually, you know, the presale well beyond what we thought it would do. So, you know, that was a blessing within itself. You know, just I was so happy to see the response from people and how they actually embraced the project, you know, because I get it, you know, fitness has been something that’s always been expensive. So giving people an option, that low cost and effective, you know, that was the only way that I could see myself doing this project, I would never charge people some ridiculous amount for something that helped them improve their lives. So you know, with with me putting it out like that the response has been amazing for people and you know, I want to keep that responsible. You know, I want this project to grow and grow and grow.

Justin Riley
Man, I think it is. And one of the reasons I think this is having a lot of success is because your focus on this specific age group, you know, like I said previously, before we’ve talked about it, a lot of people believe in this myth that once you get 40, and up, then it’s just over fitness wise. But now you’re telling us what this book, it’s not matter of fact, it’s actually a beginning. So how much do you feel like that is playing a role into the success so far?

Marvin Constant
I think it’s playing a major role into this success because like you said, most people think once they get to that stage of being in their 40s, that Oh, life as I know, it is a verb, but that is so untrue. You know, you can still do things with your body. It’s just a different way you have to go about it now to get those results that you got in your 20s in your 30s because again, certain things with the body slowing down that metabolism has slowed down those hormone testosterone levels hair doing the so you got an Understand what your body’s doing at this age, and how do you put yourself and your body in position to week despite all the factors that are stacked against you?

Justin Riley
No staffline guys, I’m telling you this is the book you need. At the end of the show, we’re going to tell you how you can get your hands on this book so we’re gonna get you hooked up. All right, Marvin with your stuff included, there’s a lot of grown man hitting that happened in this room. Many backs and quarterbacks are still having nightmares because of all of you. If you’re running back a quarterback you may want to flip over to a less dangerous show. Like say the fall of the Paul finebaum show. Marvin, will you please introduce our guests?

Marvin Constant
Ah, ladies and gentlemen, you know me personally, I’m a fan of these gentlemen just like the rest of you are. I am truly a fan. I had the pleasure of watching them live and in person back when they were album in 2000. So with a hearing he says she’s having a baby, the woman And only jurrell Harris and Courtney Upshaw, ladies and gentlemen to Alabama’s fine.

Unknown Speaker
What’s up, fellas?

Courtney Upshaw
What’s going on? What’s going on guys? Though,

Justin Riley
man, I’m excited. Marvin says he’s excited. He didn’t believe I’m as excited as he is. But one thing you know, I watched the WWE back in the day like in 2000. And they had this era called the ruthless aggression era. But I think they stole that because they’re watching you guys. Because of how physical you guys were every time you stepped on the field.

Courtney Upshaw
Sure.

Unknown Speaker
Hey, what’s up,

Marvin Constant
man? Hey, listen, I want y’all to see some I’m paying homage to y’all today. See what I got?

Courtney Upshaw
Uh huh. Okay, I

Marvin Constant
like that. It 2009 National Championship cert baby. Put it out. Just y’all

Justin Riley
He’s he’s been on cloud nine so am I. So guys, this kind of circle back to the beginning yet what got y’all in love with football? To get y’all in the game?

Jerrell Harris
First, okay, what got me a little football, thank you just really the the opportunity to be aggressive. I think there I’m gonna be honest with you just being at a place where you can kind of release your frustrations and when I first started playing ball like I was, I was kind of a frustrated kid. And just being able to release that at a place and just to be able to have fun and kind of just do whatever you felt like doing was kind of the best for me. And I felt like it gave me a great opportunity after that.

Justin Riley
Well, what about you, Courtney, what led you to the game?

Courtney Upshaw
It was all me no, yes.

The back yard football

no no pads no we have no pads just that’s when I fell in love with it just you know it was your neighborhood versus my neighborhood from where I’m from so that’s basically what you know Sam made me want to play the game I love the game and the coaches that I play with no started no peewee football so you know that’s always been the reason why I got into the game just been out there you know, knocked heads. You know, since seven I was always a hit.

Justin Riley
And that definitely happened. I gotta

Marvin Constant
side with y’all because there’s nothing like dropping back and watching that receiver try to run a little weak slant route like he just didn’t catch it. And you just straight to that’s what a lot of people don’t understand what they feel like.

Courtney Upshaw
Right? Absolutely. Definitely. Hit man what you that’s what you live for. man that’s why you do it no getting away from it now in this day and age of football man but they try to penalize every hit you know I’m saying but back when we play shoot lose identity stolen our bodies around you know I’m saying so I mean that’s why I love the gang you know the physical the physical part so I mean that’s why we do it right absolutely

Justin Riley
definitely should be you know I missed the day is a pure physicality is letting man be man, you know, I’ve seen the hashtag let us play well, no, you start the hashtag let us hit. Because, you know, guys, I think that you guys are the last era, you know, of being able to do that. And I feel like that’s a major part of the game. It’s not flag football, it’s not do and touch. It’s grown men getting down that field and doing their thing.

Marvin Constant
Yeah, you know the thing about it. I think you know it, you know, even though they’re erring on the side of safety, you’re still putting the defense in a position to where you’re not allowed to be themselves, they’re not allowed to have fun. Because when you’re scared to hit somebody, that’s when you see the missed tackles. That’s when you see a lot of other things happen. So you know, I get the whole player safety aspect but you put in a defense in a bad position by doing this, right.

Courtney Upshaw
I mean, Grant have been involved in this you know, but UAB and no plan these past two weeks. Oh, last week against Miami. watching those guys who are there.

So many Tablas man is doing you know I’m saying but like you say puts you in a bad position. You have a chance to make a play Do you miss the toggle? Not in scoring position. No, Stan, we mad at each other. And we get them out the game or whatever it may be but can’t have it in a football man. Let them get A lot of guys try not to get a penalty.

Marvin Constant
But you know, things that they don’t realize is an unintended consequence of all this player safety. Back when I played I was 10 years ahead of you, you can hit people instill fear in you why receivers and running backs don’t have fear anymore because it was back when they were scared to come across.

Courtney Upshaw
That when we played to, hey, look, even even if I was still playing to this day, I’m trying to take your head off. It’s on the way to play it, man is the only way to play. Absolutely. Well, I think we all can agree that thinking too much can not equate you to being as productive as you can be. And when you you know asking players to, you know, worry about safety on every play. They’re not really able to be the type of athlete that they can be, you know, they slowing down. They sent it down early and not able to run through like the whole thing was running through running through tacos right? But how can you? Yeah, how can you run through a talk with you worried about the safety? Right? Again, because it’s dangerous. I mean, we know that you know that when you put the pads on? Exactly.

Justin Riley
You definitely bring into a very good point, the mental aspect of it, people don’t understand understand that, you know, it puts this thought in their head that they’re all of a sudden thinking about possibly getting the pill need, rather than just focusing on the play ahead, you know, what’s ahead of them and taking down, you know, either the back or the quarterback or the receiver. And I just think that kind of throws off everything.

Courtney Upshaw
Absolutely.

Marvin Constant
Yeah, because you got to think about some every defensive play in the back of his mind when he’s playing. He’s thinking, don’t get targeting 30 because you get kicked out of this game and if it’s the second half the first half of the following game, right. You have to tip till you making them be cautious when they shouldn’t have to be it is a context for Let it be what it is.

Courtney Upshaw
Exactly, exactly.

We get away from it man. I’ll make rules though.

And I’m out there trying to

throw me out again

Marvin Constant
I wouldn’t have finished mini games if we had

Unknown Speaker
Yeah,

Courtney Upshaw
that’s the audience that contact and being

taken away to find out again

Marvin Constant
yeah man that that physical aspect again that’s the whole reason why we do this on it’s all about the physical defense is all about the show off those played again.

Courtney Upshaw
Absolutely

Justin Riley
yeah well guys I’m gonna kind of circle back to back in high school course everybody knows y’all are two of the most highly sought after players Europe vision. So everybody knew your name. household names right here. Exactly, exactly. Yeah, absolutely. So, you know, we all know what you chose Alabama, but kind of take us through the high school experience and what that was like for you guys. So

Courtney Upshaw
I’ll go febrile. Okay, I’m playing with Julio Jernigan who ended up signing with Troy University. You know, he just got inducted to the Hall of Fame down at Troy, like last year, or two years ago or whatever. But you know, if it wasn’t for him, and you know, all bringing teams like that come recruit him. I don’t know if I would have had that shot because my high school coach, he wasn’t really, in my opinion, helping kids get out, you know, I’m saying and get into a situation where they can you know, say make it out. You Like go to small schools to Alabama steaks and stuff like that so you know I always tell drill every time like bro I appreciate you you know I’m saying just for that because when already come see him play they got to see me cuz I’m balling you know I’m saying so that’s how I got my start and you know of course I chose Bama almost flipped to LSU on signing day to be honest ain’t never tell you okay man shoot the rest is history to be honest man. No Don’t tell him about se trills man. Nah. Me, uh, I think mine was just honestly, it was just perfect time and I would say because back in 2000 and we came out in 2008. So around 2005 2006 on the school that was me and Dre Kirkpatrick was playing that was a smaller school. I think it was three or four a and nobody really from that school had went, you know, to a division one school and then ages mostly because of grades and you know academics but was blessed. We was blessed to be able to they consolidated the program’s going into my junior year and Drake sophomore year. And so that basically put us on a national playing field and just being able to showcase our talents against the best teams and you know, we took advantage of the moment we showed them what we was able to do. And like I said, next time you know, we got we got scholarships and we got everybody coming to knock on our doors man turn on schools from man.

It’d be in two nights right now. night it was it was it was a beautiful ride, man. But it really I said it really happened overnight. You know, how schools like you know, Pete Carroll and teams of that nature coming down to watch us play man, you know, far as I know, I ain’t never heard of him come anywhere near Alabama. So to be able to have that opportunity was blower. That’s why I told you to tell it man because, you know a lot of us, man, we didn’t get those beat schools and stuff like that man. He was adorable. Right? You know, you earned it. Shoot, let it make you feel Yeah, respect. Oh, yeah. Go ahead,

Marvin Constant
let’s say during during the recruiting process when you’re a heavily recruited prospect, it’s a very different journey than just other players who have been getting recruited. So drip you can tell them how it is. When you’re one of those people. I mean, it it’s completely different. You know, because like I say, when I came out, I had a 50 scholarship offers you know, that ain’t that’s not the everyday that’s not normal. Tell Him for REAL what it really is when you got that level of office.

Courtney Upshaw
Man, to be honest with you. I didn’t even it’s kind of like you don’t know that something is special until you leave it right because you kind of think Everybody’s getting this treatment, you think that everybody’s getting these special rise and, you know, get into flat on these trips to go to the schools and just the everything that they bring to the table, you kind of think that’s normal. I didn’t really know it was special until I had got into college. And guys was telling me like you did what? Like, you know, like, how was that like, you know, like, what did everybody do this? Like, me and me and Dre Kirkpatrick You know, this time we was the top of our positions. So, a respectfully we was getting a lot of special treatment.

Justin Riley
So let me ask the question, why Alabama guys? With everything you just said. All those offers, always top schools Pete Carroll come in there. Of course, you know, Nick Saban was coming but what was a big reason Alabama was your choice.

Courtney Upshaw
So we mailed Nick Saban

the deltas and whatnot, you know,

I needed to talk like man, this is my chance, you know, to Make it to the next level chance. Oh, you know, God that is true. That’s the main reason. I have to meet women on my little business and stuff man talking with him, man, he made me feel this gift. Like, you know, he always says I think you better you know a better man and all that stuff. At the end of my career, my God, he’s done just that you don’t change. So always go say, Man, I’m Uh, I’m moving. I’m gonna be really really transparent on this on this one. Man. Alabama for me was probably at the time was probably my third choice. Um, honestly, like I was always I grew up a Florida State fan. So I always wanted to go to Florida State but at the time they was I want to say they were still on probation around that time. Um, not only was they on probation, but I think the same year that we came out. I think they had brought in like maybe four or five linebackers that year from the state of Florida. So that kind of like waved me away from going there. And then I had committed to Southern cow and when Pete Carroll So, but once I told, you know, I’m close with my family and my mom and stuff and once I told her about it, I took her out there. She just kind of like not it’s too far away. And you know, the next best option which turned out to be the best option out of all three was going to stay at home Alabama, I think collectively. Mmm hmm. Or the GSA some sort of course. Yeah. I think the icing on the cake was collectively at this time, man. You know, we had the number one recruiting class the first no more recruiting class album history. And collectively, all the guys coming out that year out there, we all came together and just like, you know, let’s make this happen. Let’s go change the history. Now. You’re not a Bellman on state.

Marvin Constant
You know what, and, you know, I want to thank you all for derailing us because my class is actually the highest rated class in album history for y’all. Just so you No. Aliens can do more here. Yeah, yeah, that’s okay though. Okay, okay.

Justin Riley
So this gets to the Alabama when you guys got there you know what’s amazing is that your class stepped in right away. You know usually there’s this waiting period but not with y’all. It’s like as soon as your feet hit the ground it’s like y’all felt like y’all responsible for the turnaround isn’t isn’t that something that was on your mind?

Unknown Speaker
Of course of course.

Courtney Upshaw
I like the reason for going you know when we did I mean get we we love government we got saving to calm and you know, saying the rest of us we fell out with it. You know, Dan, we ended up signing Julio. So we knew by for me, I kind of knew what, like what are we gonna end up going with it? You know, I tell a lot of people to like, we could have possibly ended up winning four championships on our entire career. You know, I’m saying so we should have you know, I’m saying with the ole team, we had a chance to, you know, end up losing the Florida game going Sugar Bowl can be by Utah 2010 calm hand down the best defense we had since we was that, or while we was there, no, no, we let the fans know, the big debt, but, you know, we would have came together as a team 2010 nobody could have beat us. Which we lost the Auburn, South Carolina and somebody else LSU. But, man, we could come on, for sure. Oh, yeah, absolutely. I think we I think we meant to be honest with you. We took it personally. When we did, we all collectively decided to come out of them together. It was a personal statement. I think they said us being at the top of our positions and nationally ranked. We was like, you know, because I think I want to say like the year before we got there they went maybe 77 and 2007. And I vividly remember like going to the games. I’m not going I was going to sleep I was falling asleep or the games. You know, it was it was no excitement. And um, I remember us going out and going down the strip and hanging out and stuff and is the football players had no respect in Tuscaloosa. They’re like, Oh, y’all get the end of the line like you know so that all of that little those little things man stuck with us and was like yeah, we can change this overnight like we need to wait and I think collectively by us coming in with that mentality we made the whole team better you know, because we push too hard it was either you’re gonna get better you’re gonna lose your position which or you are I know so i got i got a confession

Marvin Constant
I so everybody who knows me they know I talk more trash when it comes to especially by Alabama. Okay. I was there a lot when y’all were there in 2009 and T I was around a lot of time. I used to see you caught me all the time. stretching your back and inside of nerd nice back God. Employee please

Unknown Speaker
see Like rocking back again. Come on.

Courtney Upshaw
Hey, man.

Y’all know for sure.

Right? Right, right. Yeah.

Marvin Constant
God let him play help him get him back right.

Justin Riley
So let’s begin to take taking a personal archaeologist said, you know you had that loss to Florida in 2008 and then follow up with that loss of Utah it really should never happen. How personal Did you guys take those two losses you know going into spring and then going into the into the 2019 season.

Courtney Upshaw
I think we took it very. Right. I agree. I mean, just the fact that, you know, we was the better team. And we know that once we got back what was going to do? And I mean, the following year. I mean, you saw what everybody saw when we did undefeated seem to be Florida. Going to beat Texas. I mean,

shoot, I mean, we all hate losing, right?

I mean, why not? Take you personally, you know, I’m saying,

like, say we got all shot. rematching want to do? We did? Absolutely not. You know, I think for the most part to like, even though we knew that we had the potential to be good, tend to be great. I think the first year was kind of like a test run for us. You know, we put our best foot forward and collectively we added in the key pieces from that class. And like you said, it was mind blowing that what he was able to do in that first year, so it was like, man, we can just talk No, just a little bit more and more players like what can we really be? But, but you remember, bro, we didn’t even switch much from the game plan from Ollie. And oh now he just did certain things, different plays that they ran, you know I’m saying and that was the that was the story of the game and once we lost that game we was like we would have played this play different we would have won that game and what we did it great. Absolutely. And I think is also the mentality that Coach Saban teaches he literally makes you believe that you beat yourself period I don’t know thank you. It was a game Alabama where we was like not it was just a better team. Not they wasn’t we really beat ourselves. It was things that we could have did better. We weren’t in position or we missed the tackle, or we didn’t make the catch you know for that. And I think once we really honed into that and went no stopping us out of that,

Marvin Constant
but what you know, I gotta say, you know YouTube with Dante, Hightower and Rolando I will say that’s probably the best group of linebackers I’ve ever seen in college football hands down. I don’t think anybody has ever fielded linebackers of that caliber in the same unit. You look at Nikko Johnson and a lot of other backups that didn’t even play much. Y’all had linebackers for days the depth on the defense in general when you look at that defensive line with Marcel and all those guys, I mean, it’s crazy how much talent y’all had on that defense. I mean, it’s it’s amazing to me that anybody can score a point on Jada TV

Courtney Upshaw
man the thing we didn’t get hurt either you know so that was you know that was out there who’s durable we weren’t only good was durable linebackers. I mean, you had the pace of play.

Unknown Speaker
But you didn’t want to lose your

Courtney Upshaw
spot like you I came to some practice I got

because I was trying to get in at one point and once they let me in, I couldn’t lose my Oh no, sir.

Unknown Speaker
I hurt my meal.

Marvin Constant
You know, that’s the thing about being on that caliber team you get involved in, you know, those top recruiting classes. You know, we were the same way when I was in class. You know, the next guy, he’s right there behind the red clip up 100

Courtney Upshaw
Are you saying Oh, you got a wing guy, no scrub behind this, you know, he’s three, four or five stars that day and it could be starting a team right now.

You don’t have too many bad practices you want to see

Marvin Constant
I used to take your time to play don’t mean

Courtney Upshaw
just when, when they like

watching, walking, going as go make a play. Come on. I gotta get

Unknown Speaker
right.

Justin Riley
marmee you actually, you actually booted off one Those linebackers that was there when you were coming in. You sent him back into Florida.

Marvin Constant
He transferred because he knew he wasn’t gonna play anymore. Oh no. You know,

Justin Riley
and nobody ever heard from him again if you did it to him man try Travis Carroll was the guy you sent him packing

Marvin Constant
I didn’t go to school to sit on the beach. That was not my objective. That was not no

Courtney Upshaw
that’s not to go sit on the bench but

I had wait months. Some time it happens.

Marvin Constant
The I went in there kicking doors down I wouldn’t take no for an answer. I’m gonna tell you man. I’m gonna tell you what did it for me. We was in practice one day and they had never done scouting. I know y’all know Chris Evans

Unknown Speaker
is no young.

Marvin Constant
All pro I hit Chris. Chris turned the whole flip and landed on his back. All the coaches just look at it like this. Then freshmen just hit him and he turned From that moment on, they knew what it was.

Unknown Speaker
Absolutely.

Unknown Speaker
I asked

Courtney Upshaw
Chris how he’s got to make

Unknown Speaker
you sir.

Marvin Constant
can get you to clear but you know what Chris is actually going next week, and he’s gonna talk about the first thing he brought up.

Unknown Speaker
Okay, okay.

Unknown Speaker
All right, me.

Marvin Constant
y’all gotta understand so back when I played we were still using VHS tapes okay. online stuff

Courtney Upshaw
you got a phone you record it on the phone

Why are you playing

Marvin Constant
my sec plan is sitting right there I wouldn’t know select my school now.

Unknown Speaker
Hey.

Unknown Speaker
Now make no mistake.

Courtney Upshaw
I got a few. I got a few plugs back, though. So we’re

Unknown Speaker
talking about baby. Yes, sir.

Justin Riley
Well, I do want to talk about that first national champion, sir. It meant a lot to me because, you know, like Marvin, I was there when it wasn’t like that, you know, the atmosphere was completely different. When I went through four or five coaches, and in the five years I was there. And Alabama was Alabama. So we were waiting to land long time as a fan base. Then right now you guys get to that stage and my gosh, can you all describe what it what it felt like to y’all and what the mindset was, you know, just before the game started and through the whole experience.

Courtney Upshaw
So you wanna go first

So

go ahead man okay oh man for me man it that was that was bad

for me man honestly going into that game

I remember talking and

I had that feeling like man I’m about to go off yes was about you know kids and whatnot man just based off the fact that I feel like one had a couple pressures no recovered a fumble out to the egg and the sack man just a win that championship man it was probably one of the best filters out in a really can’t really explain it as much more than that man. It was just a great fifth

As for my Man I would definitely say man that was that was probably one of the biggest and best games that I’ve ever been a part of and witness just atmosphere man it was crazy. Being in California it was just a whole experience for that game mostly I played mostly special teams that game so it really fueled the fire to going into the junior year and just trying to repeat that same energy towards that and just, you know, I think that was the first like test of like a dynasty started

Marvin Constant
although people like to say it wasn’t a dynasty and I tell them Gavin kick rocks

Courtney Upshaw
a steel gone direct, absolutely steel rolling.

Justin Riley
Of course, you know, coming off of that but big national championship win the first one since 92. How to each of your goals change and he you want a title. So what was the next step up for you guys?

Courtney Upshaw
Just like my time, you know, once I got, you know, got into it, I like to think that, you know, once I was healthy enough, I really show what I can be as a player, you know, I’m saying and I think, you know, the plays I’ve made once they put me in the star lineup, and, you know, the things I’ve done, you know, speaks for itself. So that’s, that was mainly my goal going into the season after the championship,

getting in the star

lineup and making place. Absolutely. I think it was just to piggyback off what he was saying. It was just, it was big for both of us going into that, that junior year, become a full time starters, and just really, really taking ownership for the position that we was in and being able to give back to the younger players that was coming behind us. You know, we knew that, you know, it was never a situation where we felt like okay, this is just us. We don’t get up out of here. Me, you know, at that point it was I we build a foundation or something, and we need to be able to leave our stamp on it. And I think that June Yeah, I want to say that that was that was when cosatto came in. And South sunseri man was huge to both fossa says he was a huge piece of it. I think he brought, you know, more NFL style mentality tours to individuals that was already great in the linebacker Corps. And just showing us what we need to do to be pros.

Marvin Constant
You know, you said, you know, the younger gas, a lot of people don’t understand that. It’s like a brother, it’s a culture. They don’t understand how close you are when you play on the team with people. So you know, my question above you is Who was that player who influenced you or help you all when you got there because there was always an older guy to help you know, he was saying me when I got that older linebacker, you know, so who was it for you all?

Courtney Upshaw
For me almost definitely was a

for sure. Me and him obviously was it No compete into no replace fanning after he left on my freshman year. And going into my sophomore year, I knew that it was me and just battling out to be a starter my sophomore year but he never really looked at it as we battle. He took me on his wing, they taught me the ropes to show enhance. Right? For myself, it was it was more so Cory reamer he was the guy that was in front of me when I when I got there. And I think Cory was a great fit for me because even though he wasn’t as athletic as we were, still that he had the he had the brainpower to dissect plays and to be able to study and to be able to know his opponents and that’s that was the aspect that we need the most.

Justin Riley
Now, same token as far as giving back, you take under your wing to help come up.

Courtney Upshaw
Shoot, the Xavier Dixon.

You know AJ Hubbell was my roommate man great guy man funny kid man. But those guys once you know I’m saying I got into a position to actually like be a leader of opposition group you know I’m saying so those guys a stance and you know them they’re my guys man for sure absolutely absolutely for me I think that when it comes to my was my German accent that was that was my god man I you know I kind of helped him and nurtured him to take that position over I thought I love him to make sure that he was in the right position and he knew exactly what to do.

Marvin Constant
Yeah, I will tell you why man cherish that because I can tell you from experience man I played the 20 years ago and I still talk to them enjoying the gas who I play with on a weekly basis to this date 20 years

Courtney Upshaw
Absolutely.

And I still root for them god man any Bama player before or even after me you know I’m shouting room for on when you These guys get these big payday man. I’m proud of them happy for these guys. You know can Jake I told him that he probably my favorite running back, you know saying all along you know I’m saying and of course he didn’t have the most y’all he didn’t win the Heisman but you know I’m saying that’s when he was there I was like, bro you hands down my favorite player to watch Josh Jacobs. You know we watch him do his thing now you know I’m saying guys like ruffo

Justin Riley
I feel like Kenya is actually about to be the breakout player in the NFL. There’s no question. He’s just waiting for that moment where he’s just gonna explode. Of course, we all know what Josh is doing my gosh, game one we already have a glimpse that he more likely it’s gonna be the back of the year. There’s no question. I mean, no disrespect to Derrick Henry, but man, there’s something special about Josh.

Courtney Upshaw
Let’s say there’s no disrespect. Tommy, you know, to him is what he called himself. Man. He did his thing. Last season, especially in the playoffs when it counted. You know, I’m saying But, you know, autumn boys man, Baldwin, you know, so head down to them all.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah sure.

Justin Riley
Let’s talk about the 2011 season My gosh, you know it’s it’s been said you guys arguably had the best defense in school history. You know George Teague has gotten into arguments with me about that because we all know what kind of defense he had with john Copeland and Eric curry and all those guys but my gosh, anytime defense grace ever comes into a conversation this year stands out the most. What do y’all feel about that? Uh, that lofty praise?

Courtney Upshaw
And is I think we aren’t on the way we played. You know, I’m sure drella say Same thing with once we lost the Auburn winter that Capital One ballgame Michigan State. We had the mindset of man look, this house Don’t be next eat. You know, I’m standing right here. Back off that date performance and shoot and down, we should have went undefeated. It shouldn’t have been close to first LSU game. And I mean that’s just my opinion that’s how I feel gonna always feel that way but it’s honor man, you know, just to be out there and be recognized. One of the, you know, best defenses in Alabama history Alabama school history, but, man, we have fun man. I enjoyed it. Absolutely, absolutely, man. Just to piggyback off he said like I said it was a great honor. Man. I can honestly say that that entire year we knew that we was gonna win a championship. We knew that it was nobody that can really man oh man play us. And it was just crazy going through the season because Don’t get me wrong. It was it was a challenging year, but it never really felt like we you know, we wasn’t in position. I still remember like games actually having a conversation with the tight end. to other players on the team and even during the game it was almost as if they had already lost the game you know it’s kind of like mentally they like hey I’m just glad to be on the field with y’all

Unknown Speaker
on autograph

Courtney Upshaw
field to be playing like it was almost like they had tons of fans and so to hit me they’re like okay we on a whole different level as stated you know guys from Alabama we don’t even really we don’t really carry ourselves like that so we not even really thinking that we’re as high stature as we probably are with the nation watching a lot of schools and stuff so man it was remarkable man just to be a part of that. I mean, I just I feel like it was a visual guys with that mindset like look we don’t shut down our position like our side of the field. And all of us did that as a group man and and it was beautiful man. We did some some stuff like the way we performed got there. The plays we made, you know I’m sharing this one oh all fans give you know throw in a session okay we back let’s do what we do. That’s the mindset we had and we that’s what we gave you like the performances we put on a field that’s what it was. Absolutely. And like I said go back to just taking it personal. I think we had a different respect for the game because if you watch our Phantom for when we played, if a ball came outside the field we felt like me according for like, it was our job to make tackle point blank here. We don’t care what what we what the job is that we’re gonna do our job, but we’re gonna make a talk at the same time.

Marvin Constant
You know, I’ll say this. You know that first game you’re playing LSU kicker, Mrs. firefield. I was so pissed. I was so frustrated. Because a lot of people don’t understand how deflating that is for what you after you doing all you can do on defense and the kicker Mrs. Five Year goes like in 99. We should have won a national championship that you want to see. But we didn’t lose it because I kicked her mission field goals. So, you know, for me, it was like, man, same thing happen to us, but you’re still able to recover and go on and play them again and get that Dempsey when people don’t understand how deflating it is to put up those types of performances defensively and keep it black. He’s missing field those. And it so to overcome that, man, I got mad props to you, man because a lot of people will overcome it, you know, they let that affect him. And they ended up just letting season fall apart. So you know, mad props to y’all, man.

Unknown Speaker
Even after that, I just

Courtney Upshaw
shout out to people who voted us back in.

You know, I’m sure a lot of people was mad about that.

Absolutely. So

Justin Riley
I think Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy. still pissed off about that, and then be honest, if oklahoma state would have been that game, they would have got completely destroyed.

Courtney Upshaw
Absolutely.

Justin Riley
Now y’all, y’all talked about shutting down a field. Y’all literally did that against LSU. You didn’t let them pass 50 odd times a fan or even playing had ever seen anything like that. How does that happen?

Courtney Upshaw
I think that, in my personal opinion, it’s kind of like, it’s kind of like going to a boxing match, once you start throwing all the punches that you got in you, and that no other team is still standing. I think that starts though set in a little bit. And I think in the first game, yeah, they won the game, but I think they do everything they had at us and it seemed that we were still standing up. And I think that in the championship game, I don’t even think like I said, once again, I don’t really think they came to that they think that they really could beat us. I think it was at a point where they knew that it was it was all where they wanted they didn’t want to face us twice in one year.

Unknown Speaker
I mean,

Courtney Upshaw
we had we had that extra time you know they went and played Georgia and you know SEC championship. You know, we used to prepare, you know, I’m saying getting ready. And I mean, drill. I mean, we was on the same film and they basically tried to run the same exact stuff that you know, they saw what had a little success with it. The first guy was like, bro, we’ve been practicing this while you know, saying for weeks now, right? We don’t that’s a good place. Random pitch down, you know? Exactly. I’m saying like, come on, man. Switch it up, man. We know the game. You know, john Jefferson. Let’s be real. He knows. He was in his head earlier. They can bounce back.

Justin Riley
I think he still wakes up in the middle of night with nightmare screaming because what y’all did to him? I mean, that was Rufus, bro. That way I enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong. But Dang.

Marvin Constant
I enjoyed every second of the 21 up and you could ask for a better redemption. You could

Courtney Upshaw
I only think we even too much cared about him. Or that game. You know, I’m saying we were just in his own. Right. You man, we tell him man, everybody, man, let’s go be there man. People don’t remember this guy. And look we still talking about To this day, man. Like, it’s crazy. Absolutely. shut them down. You know, I’m saying, let’s not forget that, you know, postgame You know, I’m saying by myself you know I’m saying

Justin Riley
that soundbite is still going on all the sports talk radio shows.

Courtney Upshaw
Claire, do you want to clarify that for us, Courtney, because you you told me not too long ago that you actually didn’t say what everybody thought you said. I said I said so. We say for Mr. Ban, who’s not who was four but I said so.

They made songs on it stuff, man. It was crazy. It was crazy.

Justin Riley
Man, we finally had the church reveal nine years

Courtney Upshaw
ago. Absolutely. I thought we need to clear that up for

Justin Riley
Well, we’ve talked about how great yells defense is this transition to the current team. What did the both of you see from last year’s defense that was missing and take as much time as you like,

Marvin Constant
hold on, hold on. Before y’all start Don’t be afraid to speak your mind.

Justin Riley
Yeah, you don’t have to be shy about anything you know.

Unknown Speaker
At all.

Courtney Upshaw
I don’t first man, let me go here. I feel like we didn’t have that. We can go back to the clinton Williams. year when he No, he does. dominated games, but I felt like he was the only one dominant gang. You know, I’m saying I was looking for that next person to step up. And then going into last year, there was not one single plan for me who I felt on the defensive side to actually like go on and dominate a game, you know, I’m saying beat at Quintin Williams this year, or this past year. You know, we had a few guys, you know, some of the guys had to step up and I felt like you know, I’m saying some of the young guys they kind of, you know, a certain games that I didn’t pay attention to where we had a linebacker again beat by running back because he’s standing in the backfield. I felt like they wasn’t particularly ready to perform. I’m put like that, but I always say, Man, like, as long as saving is there. We don’t have a damn good team, you know, I’m saying but they have the buy in. You know, I’m saying I got to understand that they have a job to do. And it’s a standard there. Been said a long time ago, it just picked back up one segment God dad wants me to reel in the rest of God’s got there. And now we got to keep that same way we dominate gangs as as a defense as a whole. And we got to get back to that, you know, I’m saying that’s my take on it, you know, I’m saying, I’ll never, you know, I’m saying bash a kid. Not like that. And the day you plan for Alabama, like I say, as a standard, you got to maintain that standard. And we got dominate on that side of the ball. Absolutely, um, as for me, man, like I said, I’ll tell you back to just the level of respect and passion that we played. And in the last, I’m gonna be honest, in the last three, four years, I haven’t seen that same passion on defense. I haven’t seen you know, regardless of how strict costsaver was, we wanted to eat more. And you know, we held ourselves accountable for what we did on the field. Point Blank here. We never said okay, it’s called saving, they have us repaired and we want to position it We are self accountable. And I don’t really see I haven’t seen too many leaders on the field. Even when you go back to you know, I like to watch the guy’s body language on the losses and just when they down and stuff and I don’t really see any guys stepping up man in defense you know when we came in man we had guys like Rimando McLean Manor they’re still is one of the top middle linebackers that will come through there. And he didn’t allow you to do anything else you know, but to step up to the plate and play your best wall he didn’t allow any of that. And I think now we don’t we’re missing that we missing those guides to really get in people’s faces and, and do and make people play to up to that level.

Marvin Constant
You know, for me at times, it looked like the moment was too big for some of them. Like they didn’t realize what they had stepped into by agreeing to come play it Alabama uses a different standard here. So what you thought you could have done done enough school, not really going to work over here. So but it just seemed like that moment was just Going over the head at times like you said, like shell saying you will see him in the backfield looking in the backseat of running backs flaring

Unknown Speaker
toes down.

Marvin Constant
Right. I can see that from my couch. So clearly you see it from the field. Right, right.

Unknown Speaker
Well, go ahead,

Courtney Upshaw
Martin, like I say, even when I tell the guys that you would be you know, I’m saying like, who don’t take over you know, you’re gonna take over this gang You know, I’m saying I’m just so used to being on dominant defenses even when I got to Baltimore, you know, I’m saying playing Ray Lewis and them guys man. It was like it was a standard man like we we shouldn’t run down when we get out. I just want somebody to know stand out. You know, I’m saying they stand out from the rest of the pack like Quintin Williams did. You know I’m saying now don’t get me wrong. Yeah, Anthony Jennings and Trey Lewis, I’m got my other place. But for me, I want to see you take overnight,

you know, saying this is that was how I live.

To just dominate

Justin Riley
I completely understand what you’re saying. And I saw I mean, one God, this stand out to me with Xavier McKinney, mainly because he was trying to do everything for everybody and make up for the mistakes other players were making. And one of the things that Jared and maintenance said in an interview a while back was, like y’all just said, there’s a lot of looking around. People looking to see who’s gonna be the guy who’s gonna step up and step

Unknown Speaker
below that guy, you know, right,

Courtney Upshaw
right. Yeah, I think I think this generation is this class of kids, man. I don’t know if the social media has kind of took over and kind of, you know, just to be honest, it seemed like they just they just plan to to get their stats and leave at this point. A lot of guys I don’t feel like it’s really like, you know, we we don’t get me wrong. We worried about the NFL, but we knew that we had to take care of business as a team first, you know, and I think that’s the difference they kind of like nom Get my stats and get up out of here.

Marvin Constant
But you know for as long as I’ve been watching alabama football and playing them, I’ve never seen as many missed tackles as I did this past season.

Unknown Speaker
Never seen

Justin Riley
nothing I never late last season, we gave up 10 to 11 penalties per game and we’re, you know, we were ranked 43rd in the nation with on third down. Now let that sink in. When was the last time that ever happened? Yeah, but how much of that was youth or inexperienced? And how much of that was lack of discipline?

Courtney Upshaw
So that’s the summer both MIT You know, I’m saying, Yeah, they kids, but they are old enough to understand if I look, again, I’m going back to that standard. The standard has been set a long time ago, is how you got to do it, you know, saying this, how we expect you to be done. But you got to put it on yourself. You know, I’m trying to be a grown up In goddamn your business, and that’s gonna help you better yourself and be in a better position to get to the NFL. You know, I’m sure, Andrew

Andrew here first let’s focus on NFL later

just piggybacking off what Dre was saying but the missed tackles and stuff man I mean it’s the fundamentals of football man that’s it we got to have champions we got to stop these guys we got to you know I’m saying get off the field on third down man that’s that’s a small part when you get to the highest level there’s so much more going into a lot of this stuff man. So you should ask them this all the time. You want to thank them scouts, I don’t see them saying Miss tacos.

Marvin Constant
And it was a lot of third downs in some instances where they should have been off the field, but missed Apple extends drive and we all know how that impacts the defense because after you’ve been tacking running backs, you know all game and they rotate towards running back the linebackers. Good enough. All game so you You heard him there for four days played on plays because you’re not getting off the field. Absolutely.

Justin Riley
Okay, let’s begin the leadership aspect. You know, of course we know Dylan Moses is back so as Joshua Mellon shows the Brian Ray you know, how much does that change everything all

Courtney Upshaw
those guys you guys that’s how I look at it. I mean, someone you know he still got young guy somebody got played a lot that yes freshmen especially at the linebacker position. Yeah, look for them to take that next step along with Dylan, you know, being back, you know, I spent dealing to come back and be dealing, you know, I’m saying make plays and be that leader. But, I mean, the rest you guys got to fall in line, man. You know, I like to saying that, you know, there’s not just one leader I mean, you know, Just because you’re not the guy who speaks a lot, you know, you just did a certain way you can, you know, he’ll lead, you know, I’m saying, um, you know, I found myself like, you know, I might rah rah and stuff like that but she dread to tell you, man, I’m probably the most quietest person that you’ll ever meet, you know, I’m saying, but when it got time to, you know, I’m saying, being on that field and being my dog on that field, like, Look, I’m trying to just do nobody.

I might, you know, be the one out there talking trash.

Me between the white lines on the different Courtney, I’ll just be the most quietest person, you know, saying. So, you know, I had to go through the phase of growing up and taking the next step as being a leader and a cipher these guys, man, just a process and they got to go to absolutely nothing. You know, like I said, it’s a tremendous opportunity for these guys to be coming back. But I think it’s an opportunity for the guys that was there last year to step up now. They got a season on a belt they got ropes they got you know game time so it should be I’m looking for them to make just as many plays as and just also looking for these guys to make it to to give us you know more durable player this year I think we got this we got nine outside linebackers and nine inside linebackers coming into the season so I’m just looking for as hopefully it’ll be able to stay healthy. That’s the main thing I feel like we can stay healthy we give ourselves the best opportunity.

Marvin Constant
Well yeah, they stay healthy but we have an extra dynamic tissue that we’ve never had for you playing 10 sec games. That’s

Courtney Upshaw
what you’re gonna need them buddies. You got

Marvin Constant
anybody and whoever holds up best. That’s the last team standing. Absolutely. Absolutely the

Courtney Upshaw
best guy to play the best.

Marvin Constant
Yeah, but you know, honestly, I like this plan tick sec game. Plan. He loves scrub scoops for sure. agree with you on it separated from the bowl or separated early

Justin Riley
and let’s be honest whoever comes comes out the SEC go ahead and give him that ring. I mean there’s no other conferences is doing what we’re doing. I mean, the SEC is already the most NFL ready conference and there’s no there’s no no one that comes in that right now.

Marvin Constant
But I will say y’all had an easier than we had to go. Do you know the running backs that we face?

Justin Riley
I knew that was common practice.

Marvin Constant
I’ll give you one example. Playing Tennessee they were rotating Jamal Lewis and Travis Henry every other play daddy But the week before that we were tackling Deuce McAllister then after that we tackled and James Johnson Kevin fall Rudy Johnson all those guys

Courtney Upshaw
let me ask you this

did you put them on a day

Marvin Constant
Oh nobody now

Courtney Upshaw
Oh sir line them up

Marvin Constant
line them up let’s go

Courtney Upshaw
no yeah we need fam we need to take oh man

Unknown Speaker
brought museum

Marvin Constant
museum they brought me up to speed shout out to rob museum for making me want to kick apply a

Unknown Speaker
paintbrush

Marvin Constant
and then we went to our bowl game and we had to play anthem We played FedEx I was born at any time in Tom Brady’s a quarterback Come on

so we got to see Tom Brady before the rest of running knew what Tom Brady was. Right right.

Courtney Upshaw
Brady nice like

Marvin Constant
I tell you what we were beating him we were up by I was three touchdowns he didn’t play the first half they brought him in the second half. He went to work on us. And field goal kicker either missing two fields. Oh, so we lost about one point I come on, man. It’s always a kicker somewhere.

Justin Riley
And we used to have pickers at our school. What No, when did that change? Me all Americans. I mean,

Marvin Constant
I’m gonna tell you why we hated kickers in school. When duboce was dead. We’d be out there in full pass practices sweating hard. We look in the indoor facility then in full They’re playing touch football. We’re trying to kick touch football. Come on, man. That’s why you’re missing kicks instead of practicing.

Justin Riley
Speaking of coaches, we’re adding Freddie Roach to the phone. What does that do for defense? I’m pretty excited about it. I mean, he was there when I was there. I and man, he was just a special player. Intense and he’s he’s bringing that same intensity as a coach to the field. Upgraded that defense get having him on the coaching staff.

Courtney Upshaw
Tomato Soup. Yeah, absolutely. I think we as we all know, man, you know, the staff that was there with me and Courtney, a lot of half of them I think half of them maybe still there’s a few pieces but they they agent and I think so the aggression and the mentality that they put in us you know, of course, that’s agent as well. So we need younger guys to step in. And be able to implement that mentality. Yeah, like you said Courtney said the standard but we need young guys that was there to be able to put that standard in. You know, I think so. I think there’s tremendous for the defense that I am on staff No.

No. big step for show.

Marvin Constant
Well, Freddie, if you are watching this man, I text is more than a year’s fun. I’m still waiting to get back at me. But I think by having Freddy in there as a coach, man, I think that’s phenomenal man because Freddy came in as a player, right when I was finishing up so I got to watch him as a key coming to the hospital grow up, you know, and watch him play with D’Amico and all those guys so I know what they had instilled in him, you know, after going through probation and all other stuff, still choosing out of them still being successful. So I know he’s gonna have that same attitude and mentality translate to the field with the guys who’s coaching.

Justin Riley
All right, we’ve talked about somebody who needs to step over For each of you guys, who is the guy that needs to step up as you come into the season?

Unknown Speaker
Oh, oh.

Unknown Speaker
Oh,

Courtney Upshaw
de la

Unknown Speaker
core

Courtney Upshaw
in a special house, we shall run down and we’re getting back to it. I’m not gonna say I’m not bad, but you know, I’m gonna put it all on, put it on him. Right? I’m gonna say for me, God made me step up and I’m gonna respect the big year for him and centaine I think that when he came in he had a lot of hype. Here is the protiviti NFL quarterback sighs I think I’m ready to see him. You You know cut loose and just ball out and be a lockdown cornerback.

Marvin Constant
For me I want to see least step up. I want to see him hopefully this offseason he had a chance to loosen those hips up because I used to see him out there with him tight hips nice reminder corner with that tight back

you know, during the offseason, he was able to loosen up some get that a lot of movement together, because I do think that he can be a great addition to what you know, most other guys you know if he’s able to move laterally because that was one of the things that I see hindering him a lot last year.

Justin Riley
For me, I think it’s gonna be crucial. For me, I think it’s gonna be Christian Harris. I think this kid is gonna be a phenomenal athlete. And when it’s all said and done, he’s probably gonna be one of the best has played the position. But my biggest thing is let Christian bar more eat, let him do what he can do because that man is a beast and we gotta turn them loose,

Courtney Upshaw
turn them loose.

We will make them calls. We just sit back and watch.

Marvin Constant
A but you know, I bet a lot of games and so I hate having to pay people so I need him to turn it loose because I don’t like Hey. Hey.

Justin Riley
I’m ready to see it. Alright, well guys, we’re getting close to the end of the show. Do you have any closing remarks as we start to head out?

Courtney Upshaw
So me Well, I mean yeah I mean I just want to you know, you know ask that everybody continue to stay safe man I hear in his work, you know so much going on, you know with the injustices in the Black Lives Matter and all that stuff. You know, this Coronavirus matches as everybody continue to stay safe you know, as a person who likes to just, you know, stay to themselves. I mean, the times now we all come together, you know I’m saying as a as a whole country and you don’t need to worry about that’s all pretty much what I got. Absolutely. I think Courtney said it best to be said after that.

Marvin Constant
And you know, me personally, I just want to thank y’all for taking time out of your busy schedules. I know y’all got a lot going on to spend this time with this man and I’m grateful like I said in the beginning, I was always truly a fan of yours, man.
