The day has come the big 10 has voted and they announce today that the football season will resume the weekend of October 24. And a person that never played in the big 10 but played it in a way better conference called the SEC. Matt CODEL. Former Alabama lead Welcome back to the sports cast.

Matt Caddell
Glad to be back. Thanks for having me.

Santiago Leon
Mecca Dell. What a day today in sports. Um, what were your first thoughts when you heard the big 10 coming back?

Matt Caddell
I kind of figured out what happened. You know, I just think it was a bad move. I don’t think this big 10 handled this whole coronavirus pandemic football seasons, the best way. Just looking at how, you know, the Commissioner of the SEC has handled it being slow and methodical. Getting all the information, listen to the medical staff are really playing it by ear. being smart and having a plan. Well, I feel like the big 10 really tried to be seen by the trend this year was trying to be out in front and be the first to make a decision I guess. garner attention and I think it came back and bottom bit them in the butt because they were the first To say, oh, we’re not planning for a football season. Obviously the PAC 12 set followed behind and I guess they were thinking the SEC and the ACC and all these other conferences we’re gonna follow by behind them and it did not. And as you see we’ve had football ACC play, we had some I think the magazines or other conferences played and we got NFL so it’s kind of not looking good on them while looking at them. Like why aren’t y’all having football season? So I don’t think it’s a good look. I mean, obviously their plan but I just think if they hadn’t been like the SEC, man, slow and methodical, getting as much information as possible, moving the season back to September 26. gathering all information as possible. So trying to be up front trying to make the decision, I guess, trying to everybody look at us. So that’s just my thoughts. I mean, glad they’re able to have football season, but I just you know, kudos to the SEC for handling my commissionaire Megan We do everything in a methodical and gather as much information where we can keep you know, players safe and have a football season.

Santiago Leon
Of course nobody’s there right?

Matt Caddell
Nobody SEC is you know, superior minus and then when it comes to talent, recruiting, coaching, I mean, players, traditions, compensation is second to none. So, yeah, I’m always gonna be biased.

Santiago Leon
Yeah, which I’m gonna piggyback what you said, Matt, I think you’re right. I think the big 10 were premature when it came to deciding to postpone until spring Okay, let’s just postpone it to September 26. With the SEC does. I think the Coronavirus is like the weather you just don’t know to the time comes. So you had to measure it, you know, play by ear, per se. Um, obviously, there was a lot of pushback from the big 10 itself. Obviously, there were some rumors about coaches, athletic directors complaining about like, Okay, why is it you know, being posted To the springtime also players like Justin fields. Um, what do you think got the most pressure was the players, the coaches or just like the whole country maybe?

Matt Caddell
Well, I just think it was all those factors. I mean, you look at players think Justin field when the news first broke he had like over he started a petition to get players you know, obviously football back a lot of parents of players went to the big fan offices, obviously, the president chimed in. And I just think, you know, was was it a couple weeks ago when they had that kick off game in Montgomery, West Central Arkansas and I believe Arkansas State. I mean, it wasn’t many fans, but you know, you have football, they had ACC kickoff last week. The NFL kicked off last week. It’s just not a good look. And I just feel like you know, they didn’t want to be left out. I know. They’re saying They got more information on rapid testing, but I’m quite sure you knew you had the same information about rapid testing a couple of weeks ago, so I just think they kind of look like they had an egg on their face and didn’t want to be left out. And I just don’t think it was a good decision to, like we said earlier to be premature and make the decision. Yeah.

Santiago Leon
What happened was behind the scene was that the league’s entire council presidents and chancellors met for several hours Sunday afternoon, with members of the return to competition tax force, which plan for scheduling and television. The big 10 Medical subcommittee review the latest medical information about a safe resumption of play during the coronavirus pandemic. And the task force also met Saturday with eight presidents of Chancellor’s including Nebraska Chancellor Ronnie green. Um, there was a lot going on behind the scenes. And like, of course, there were some players you know, That opted out. Do you think some of those players that opted out and say, I mean, I’m going to focus on the NFL Draft? Do you think there’s a chance they might turn things around? Hey, let me go back and play for this season.

Matt Caddell
In the big 10, possibly, but I don’t think in sec, you know, LSU said a lot of players opting out and you know, obviously they’re playing an SEC, But to your point, I think was Chapelle away big time cornerback opted out yesterday, and the decision came to play this today. So you don’t know. So it might be a chance.

Santiago Leon
That’s a tough call. Yesterday Oh, wait, no. Oh, no, they’re back today. But But here’s the thing that like how I mean, do you think these players are ready proven what they can do? Or do you think scouts want to see them play no matter? What

Matt Caddell
mean depends on how much size they have. I mean, obviously, if he knows he’s gonna be a top corner and he’s had maybe at least two years of tape to go out there. Obviously He should be fine or solidify look at Justin fields you’ll probably be regardless if he plays or not will probably still be the number two quarterback off the board. But you know God night like trade lands or some other maybe in book maybe play this year could have a you know something to say about that so i mean you know this is something that they have to make a decision about and deal with the consequences you know, if you do play you do have the opportunity. The other is really solidify yourself and have the chance to win a championship at the same time that moves you know, solidify yourself in the draft side, you know, you have the most current film out there and you know, you can even move up really sorted by yourself from there first round draft picks so he knows the players and you know, it’s probably gonna be a tough decision for them. So either way, I just hope they make the best decision what works best with them and their family.

Santiago Leon
Matt, a lot of people are saying that Ohio State is by far the superior team in the big 10. I want to hear your thoughts. Is Ohio State by far the favorite to win the big 10?

Matt Caddell
Yes, I believe so. But I think they, you know, I feel like the big 10 past couple years have been really competitive. It’s not just solely Ohio State but you know, they’ve had you know, Michigan’s you know, stepped their game up Penn State is a tough game for them. You know, always Wisconsin’s usually very tough teams like Iowa. So it’s a tough conference, and I think they’re probably the favourites to win or be my pick, obviously, with Justin fields, and Austin’s Ron de, etc. But I think it’s going to be competitive. As you can tell in the NBA, you never know what might happen. So I think the key is to have continuity with your team chemistry. And I think you know, look at seems like the AC See, the SEC they’ve been able to have practice not been able to stop. So I think they’re gonna be it’s gonna prepare a team like Alabama on down the road to really be really pushing for it.

Santiago Leon
So the big 10 are slated to begin the weekend of October 24. Of course we’ll get more details on the schedule throughout the couple of weeks. The Pac 12 had eight news today that California Governor will not restrict any Pac 12 teams planning California. Pac 12 has not announced when they’ll be coming back. I mean so far they’re going to come back in the spring but there’s no announcement about pushing them you know, towards the fall. Matt Do you think they’ll follow suit as well?

Matt Caddell
You know, this patch was a little tricky. You know, they have a lot going on out there and they have wildfires, toxic air. You know, I think the some of the Coronavirus restrictions in certain states are could make it a little challenging, but if they’re going to try to have to play football, they’re gonna have to do it now. Because I don’t think the college football playoff is going to push back their calendar, I think they’re going to kind of keep everything the same. That’s why I think it was pressed for the big 10 to go ahead and make a decision to get games played in October, late October, so the PAC 12 obviously, with the governor coming out with that information that is no probably schools and things like that, and the PAC 12 are looking to kind of play but if they are, they’re going to have to really get things kicked off and have some type of form of plan to really play football. I mean, they’re looking at November. That’s going to be kind of challenging and let’s say come up with a plan to start, you know, plan like between by late October, really get like eight games in or something like that. So I you know, I, for me, I say I think I have about 25% optimism The Pac 12 play football this fall.

Santiago Leon
Yeah, this is about a couple of teams, USC, Stanford, UCLA that are from the PAC 12. Correct me if I’m wrong, and there’s one other team that are playing in California, I believe Oregon and Washington, I think they might have some restrictions. So we’ll definitely keep you guys up to date. Um, we have Rudy Griffin on Saturday, and he’s really calling it a asterik season, Matt. He’s saying this is not a complete college football season. Obviously, things are fragmented schedules are not parallel together. Will you call it a asterik? season? No.

Matt Caddell
Uh, no, I wouldn’t call it a season longest football’s been played. I mean, you look at the SEC. It’s a 10 game. Season is brutal.

Santiago Leon
I can’t wait for that man. To be honest. This is what the season I’ve

Matt Caddell
been looking forward towards. And it’s so funny. It’s like every like, I know the ACC kicked off. The other day but I was like really like this is everybody’s waiting on sec to kick off because when DC kicks off you know you get out you get in competition talent and you’re getting very competitive game so to me I know that actually kicked off but it really wasn’t officially kick off we won’t be officially kick off me for college football September 26 but yeah I just think you know the SEC is doing it right and I just can’t wait for football to be played

Santiago Leon
with these gonna happen with the college football playoff committee. Do you think they’re gonna have a playoffs? Nothing’s been official yet nothing. You know, there’s no schedules, but is it? Is it gonna happen or do you think there’s going to leave it to the conference championship games and everyone will decide their conference but there’ll be no one true national championship?

Matt Caddell
I think it will. I think the playoffs committee is going to obviously have a college football playoff now it’s probably obviously be limited fans. etc like that maybe they do like a college football playoff bubble or something like that have all the things play in which baseball will be doing

Santiago Leon
for their playoffs so

Matt Caddell
yeah, yeah. Have like everybody play in Dallas or something like that, you know something like that but yeah, I think there will be a college football playoff now that they have one of the big fish back in the game obviously, you know it’s going to be contenders go you’re going to be Clemson it’s going to be Ohio State it’s going to be Alabama. You probably with a tough schedule, you’re probably going to have maybe two sec teams possibly. Or maybe you know, maybe another day depends on how well they doing ACC so I think they’re going to have the college football playoff knowing that they have the big heavy hitters, you know, Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson and probably another sec team possibly maybe a Florida to really, you know, have it out obviously Oregon. would be a top team at the PAC 12 but they’re not playing I think it’s a little bit too late for them I think they’re gonna have a college football and I’m quite sure they’re gonna I think it’s important that these commissioners get on the same page and try to figure out some type of ball season you know, I think that would be kind of cool you know, maybe the second place team or third place seen sec plays to pay by seeming that ACC I’ve been having some really cool pretty cool matchups. Yeah, well, I mean, you might not get me I’m quite sure you can get some type of sponsors and things and just have you know, competition for guys to play. You know, different teams. So it’s gonna be interesting and it’s gonna be opportunity for Team maybe a UCF maybe it could be that 14 or Memphis can maybe that 14 to really step up and get that kind of number four seed so it’s a

Santiago Leon
great opportunity for them

Matt Caddell
to shine. Yeah, it is. So obviously they’re going to have more eyes on them this year. Being able to play in front of you know, More TVs and television sets so it’d be an opportunity for a team like Memphis or Central Florida that maybe get that fourth spot so I know Alabama fans a lot to be playing for the playoff but uh yeah i think the playoff console buccaneers and I’m gonna roll on with

because Football Playoff this year.

Santiago Leon
Yeah, for sure that had to determine a championship I do think probably ACC and sec that will probably have like a longer break before the playoffs. I know. The big 10 starts in October, possibly Pac 12. I think they’re gonna start in October. But yeah, it could be November. I think they’ll just have to line it up somehow. But I know that one conference will have a better break schedule. Yeah. So we’ll definitely keep that in mind. Of course, we’ll be tracking the news of what’s going to happen with college football has been one heck of a season but as we were predicting For a college football is so fragmented. There’s a lot of conferences, Commissioner schools involved, and AFL CIO uniform, you know, you can make one decision one day. So that’s something you know, to think about but you know, hey, things are doing well. What do you hear about Alabama? How are they containing the virus avid? Have they done a good job so far?

Matt Caddell
I think, you know, the medical staff because they themselves think they’ve done a great job of really, you know, having a plan for coronavirus. I mean, they test like twice a week. those type things I think the rate has been very low and I think if they’ve had players with that had maybe possibly had the Coronavirus, I think has demanded a dramatic. So, you know, I think it’s a lot you know, players gonna have to be that much more discipline this year, you know, to be you know, really be disciplined on the field and make sure that they are, you know, keeping social distancing. keeping their mass on those side things to really you know focus and do what they have to do to be able to play all Saturday’s and I think that’s going to give Alabama the better chance this year to win I think they’re going to disguise a hunger this year. I think they’re ready to prove themselves. I think Mike Jones probably is going to definitely be the starter but from what I’m hearing Bryce young is really on his sales so to speak. So he’s outperforming

Santiago Leon
the doubters.

Matt Caddell
He really making the competition that much more. more competitive. So I think you know, that first game I won’t be surprised to see Bryce young get some snaps early. Regardless because I think, you know, he’s been proven that and kept going into the fence, making plays, so I’m quite sure. Co sarkies in and kasavin want to get him out on the field. Really get some game time snaps really create that quarterback depth This year and I think defense is really hungry you know having certeyn back there on the corner it’s going to be a great leader of their secondary haven’t Jordan battle those type guys really helped the secondary mold come together and I think it’s gonna be exciting. First game obviously planning Missouri. I’m glad we kind of started on the road. I think that’s kind of good. No really. Wow,

Santiago Leon
that’s more like oh, no,

Matt Caddell
not I mean, I think that’s what it is because you really have to come together you know, you really have to prove it on the road. You know,

Santiago Leon
you got went on the road and went on

Matt Caddell
the road. Yeah, and I think it’s gonna be a great confidence booster for us. So you know, to win play that game. I forgot who we played week to but then I’d be a Texas

Santiago Leon
a&m and then Miss and then Ole Miss afterwards. It was the first

Matt Caddell
game though.

Santiago Leon
Those are not

Matt Caddell
on the road and you know, it’s not going to In a walk, so we’re gonna have to come with it every week, week in and week out. And I think these guys up for the challenge, I think cost savings up for the challenge thing to coach yourselves up for the challenge and I think they’re just ready to Ready, go out there and prove themselves and get better. And, you know, just, you know, dominate the SEC kind of have that done a factor, especially when defensively and really help our offense and team overall to, you know, be dominant in the sec.

Santiago Leon
Back to what you’re saying by Bryce young. Is there been a disadvantage for the rookies coming in this year? with like, the whole scheduling changes, or there’s not much of a difference? Where have you heard?

Matt Caddell
Uh, well, you know, it’s probably more traditionally you would think it’s a disadvantage for these players coming out of high school are so much more better developed, I guess, so to speak, to come in and make that transition to a college game. Obviously, Bryce didn’t have spring training, but he hasn’t missed a beat you know, so A lot of these freshmen came in, they had the discipline, the maturity to come in and be effective. You know, working out and being effective and having an impact on the field. So you guys like Brian branch, Malecon Moore, Bryce, young Jamal Baker, and these guys really stepped up their game are really taking advantage of the opportunities to really help the, you know, be effective, use an impact and really be able to help our team win this year. So, you know, I don’t think it’s more so of a disadvantage. I just think it’s, you know, individually based on stigmas guys are so much more developed, you know, they’ve been going to camps, they’ve been, you know, already in the playbook and working out and I just think they’re just eager to get on the field and just really show their talents. So I wouldn’t say it’s a disadvantage. Just think these guys are so much more developed, really making, you know, the spread offense and, and the defense’s, I think that is the transition is much, much easier for them to come to the college game. So,

Santiago Leon
like they’re almost playing college football, like with in high school games pretty much almost.

Matt Caddell
Yeah. Yeah, you look at modern data, big time program, you know, guys coming out of Texas, you know, high school football out in Texas is huge. And so especially throughout the south, so, you know, I just think they focus and, you know, have the clarity and the focus and the discipline to execute. I think they’ll be able to go out there and be impactful to help our team win.

Santiago Leon
And there you have it, Mecca, Dell has been there, done that he’s been through the berrics. He’s been through the training ground into the battleground. And he’s optimistic about this year for Alabama. Um, how many wins you think Alabama will get this year?

Matt Caddell
Wow, you know, that’s a good question.

Santiago Leon
It’s a tough one. Because I still think if they lose one This will make the playoffs if there’s a playoffs.

Matt Caddell
Yeah, I think they’ll Yeah, I have them going 14. You know, honestly, I just thought coming off of last year, seeing LSU go undefeated dominate the SEC, dominate the college football playoff dominate the SEC championship, I think. And they know they were, you know, a couple places away from being LSU or possibly leaving them again. I just think that just motivated them even more to really say, Hey, we can get it done. You know, we can do that. And so I’ve got them going undefeated just because you know, she really kind of set the bar last year you know, going undefeated dominating, got the Heisman Trophy winner, they dominated in every form facet of the game. So I really that thing that stuck out to a lot album players, obviously the coaching staff from Satan. He was at the national championship game so I think he’s, you know, he’s using that as motivation. I got these guys on 14 out of this year.

Santiago Leon
That sounds very possible and Alabama they’ve done it before being undefeated. But this year feels like there could be they could definitely cut some slack and they could lose one Too they still make it that’s what I’ve been hearing. Um, let’s shift towards the NFL Matt, which rookie impressed you the most during week one?

Matt Caddell
Oh, wow.

I think obviously caught I was it was Hilaire the running back out of LSU he’s really, really helped. That can see cheese folding offense really have an effective running game. He was very impressive. I got to go to the Alabama guys shoot. He was very impressive that night.

Henry Rose was impressive.

Santiago Leon
When he got hurt a bit. Ha. He got hurt. rugs. Yeah, he’s okay.

Matt Caddell
Yeah, he was okay. From what I’m here. I saw chase young I just think he was really happy that you know that defense of wine with the Washington football team. Be eagles. Eagles I know Eagles fans. I live there right now but

Santiago Leon
Gosh, I was surprised No huge surprise no one saw that they’re undefeated in the NSA.

Matt Caddell
Yeah, they are and it’s never

a possibly win. Does that make sense?

You ever been?

You know they’re gonna keep playing games and forget easily, you know the good tenants for that division? Yeah tayshaun rugs caught out with sullair Judy. Were all impressive. I saw Diggs play the other night he looked, you know, it looked Okay, you know, so getting

in those first game.

But yeah, I just think those guys really stood out for me.

Santiago Leon
What stood out to me was JK Dobbins. You didn’t mention him yet.

Matt Caddell
Oh, yeah. So actually, I forgot about JK Dobbins because, you know, I have my my fantasy team. Me too.

Santiago Leon
I chose them over Dobbins

Matt Caddell
I should have went without

Santiago Leon
me. I wasn’t 100% I was more confident with Hilaire Edwards.

Matt Caddell
Yeah, but

when I dragged it so I was like, gonna have a big year. You know, it’s like maybe you know him and dominance was split time but you know, with the Ravens they have three running backs to have I think it was number 35. The other running back so they split. I was looking at some stats, they all got about 30 we’re not like 30% of the snaps. So a little fatter fantasy pig like I think Mark Ingram is going to be getting high fantasy numbers when no three running backs are splitting the carry so but yeah, Jonathan’s look very good. You know, he was very strong in the whole explosive. So yeah, JK Dom’s a big. So definitely look out burrow for what Often Joe burrow obviously that clicked the screws again at the end but you know he made plays at the end to keep them to win the game. So how about

Santiago Leon
that automatic starter about coming in no matter what

Matt Caddell
I thought it was gonna give him time on

Sunday as well because dispatching was gonna pick up a pig so

Santiago Leon
yeah, don’t use me as a dolphin fan. I don’t care if we lose every game I like to save till till next year. You know, that’s just my opinion. You’ll keep them nice and healthy hundred percent coming in.

Matt Caddell
Yeah,

Santiago Leon
but anyways,

Matt Caddell
yeah,

yeah, go ahead. Yeah. No, I just think they’re gonna have to plan probably in the next couple of weeks. I didn’t plan this week cuz buffalo hasn’t really talked to you fast but I think they’re gonna try to get him in. Maybe week six or something like that. I was

Santiago Leon
gonna say week six I don’t think he Justin Herbert by week six too.

Matt Caddell
Yeah, probably harbored big fan bases. were eager to see those guys play.

Santiago Leon
Yeah, but I don’t know. I’m I’m more like To like they maybe December at the earliest but you know Fitzpatrick is the bridge quarterback Everyone knows that if anyways we’ll see what happens in the next couple of weeks in the NFL college football I’ve been receiving now I can’t announce this news because it’s not official. It’s not detailed, but maybe later on tonight we’ll we’ll we’ll talk about it. Anyways, um, predictions are you ready?

Matt Caddell
Yes.

Santiago Leon
I only have one game well actually two games. Three, okay. Let’s go for NFL Bengals. No, yeah, the Cincinnati Bengals at the Cleveland Browns.

Matt Caddell
I got the Cincinnati Bengals. I don’t know what’s up with the browns. Baker Mayfield. He just went all the way down. He has more commercials and I’m like this guy has improved anything to have his commercials but it is what it is. I got Cincinnati Bengals

Santiago Leon
going. You think he’s not the man they’re like you think his days are numbered.

Matt Caddell
maker. I think that too and I just don’t think he’s that good.

Santiago Leon
Yeah, dude, I just don’t see it man. Yeah.

Matt Caddell
A lot of balls like he had protection and he was overthinking we’re under good throwing guys. I just don’t think he’s that good. Right now so they lose that game. It’s gotta be brutal for Baker Mayfield

Santiago Leon
MBA. Matt, I think you watch some NBA. Who takes game one between the Lakers and the nuggets?

Matt Caddell
Oh, I think the Lakers say game one. I think they’ve got plenty of rest. But you never know. Denver. You know one thing they show display offices. When they’re counting out they’re gonna pop away either series or Windows series. So I think the LA Lakers say game one.

Santiago Leon
Yeah, nuggets is definitely interesting team. I am a huge kawhi Leonard fan. So I was really, really sad and disappointed to see him go and even though they’re up three, one, but I’m glad for the nuggets because they’re saying hey, we’re not just a walkover. We want to be competitive and who knows? Make the finals but I doubt it but we’ll see what happens. Who takes game two last night a game thriller from Butler defeated Boston Boston light like, you know most of the game. Miami came back and won in overtime. Who takes game to Matt?

Matt Caddell
Well, that’s a tough one because I had Boston and st game too. But now Miami’s taking game one. I’m gonna go with the heat, too as well.

Santiago Leon
Miami man Butler things are just rolling and jelling with hero Tyler hero and Bala brothers having an MVP season, even though he didn’t win MVP, but he should have won it Yeah, but with the whole restart but I’m a huge fan. I go from Miami if they wish they could possibly wanted but obviously with LeBron James things change. random question of the day what goes best with guacamole Matt? burgers burritos, toast or like nachos.

Matt Caddell
Oh god, I’m gonna say nachos

loved it. nachos was

Okay, so well,

Santiago Leon
and the winning 70% and the poll on Twitter poll and burgers is second at 23rd is burritos 10. And toast is at zero.

Matt Caddell
Awesome. Awesome.

Santiago Leon
I think I should have not put toast I should have put just something else. Like a sandwich.

Matt Caddell
Maybe? Or tacos or something like tacos.

Santiago Leon
Yeah, you’re right. That’s good stuff. Yeah. And you know what? You pay a extra dollar 25 at Chipotle a for so or dollar 50 Yeah, it’s worth it. Sometimes it is. It feels like everyone puts while like and like I mean, pretty much everyone puts it in anyways, like by default because it’s so good.

Matt Caddell
Yeah, and one thing about suppose they’re gonna be getting the ball they don’t lather they don’t give you more than enough for Glock. Yeah. Where are your your bowl a burrito? So

Santiago Leon
did you know that if you order a side of tortilla or like you know Like the flower software that if you put it into a burrito you’ll get more out of it versus getting a regular burrito

Matt Caddell
oh wow I didn’t know that

Santiago Leon
Yeah. And which which they recommend you to take to tortilla just because it’s so much to get into burritos for the price of one

Matt Caddell
wow thanks for

Santiago Leon
good health devices the hidden trick Yeah. Anyways you can definitely go on on Twitter poll to make those votes Twitter poll ends at 7am Eastern tomorrow so make sure you put in your because today’s national guacamole day and I should probably go eat out afterward the show anyways Matt? Sometimes sports can get messy in some other networks, but we want to keep things you know, just sports facts and and we have a good combination sports guys always joke around college football and soccer. It’s a different it’s a interesting combination, but it’s like adding guacamole to a burger in a wow.

That’s the burger is the gospel full of Glock. It’s like the soccer, you know? Yeah, you can’t be.

Matt Caddell

Santiago Leon
Ryan is his all time cool guy dude, intern. And Michael Scott loves him for some reason and Ryan goes to business school. I think what?

Matt Caddell
