Y’all know the Auburn is an Indian word. I found this out. Auburn is an Indian word that means nothing to do in the middle of nowhere, so people had to come from mouths around come to the shows with the shoulder. Phenomenal, is a nightclub man. And I just had a good time. Marvin Constant
Keep an eye out. That’s all I’m gonna take. Um, so we got Gerald Dixon with us tonight. One of my good friends, man, great guy. When I when I say man, the epitome of living the American dream, you know, because again, from what he started to where he is now. It’s like a storybook ending. You know, you couldn’t read or write about a hallmark movie than this. You know, this guy is the epitome of perseverance. His father played a pivotal role in his life. We’re gonna let him tell you all about that. And just man has impacted so many lives. And when I say he’s the reason why I have all the degrees that I have, because he kept his foot on my neck telling me to go back to school. But although he said when I went back, I never stopped because I kept getting degrees. But that’s a whole nother point. But yeah.
Steve Brown
Listen, Okay, I understand what you’re saying about Jiro. Now I’m so excited but you kind of missed up on some. I we don’t want his movie on the Hallmark Channel. That’s
Unknown Speaker
keep it strong. Go ahead.
Steve Brown
Yeah. Dr. Dixon was a stud at Alabama found his career so we can put them on a hallmark and we can be looking at the Gio Dixon story be crying and kitchen. No, no, we got to else man. We got to put milk. Also. Also, we got my dude man. Oh my god. Terry Jones is in the building, man. Man. I don’t like nothing. Jones is but his dad.
Unknown Speaker

Unknown Speaker
Man, man. What’s up, man?
Unknown Speaker
How you been?
Unknown Speaker
Oh, man. Oh my gosh. Man,
Unknown Speaker
he had the house man like saying he’s getting in trouble and everything else. Like I said, I’m still at work. I had to sneak off a little minute. Stick out for a minute second hop on with my boy Steve brown man. How you doing?
Steve Brown
Hey, man, I’m good. Okay, Can y’all Can y’all got a catch? Because you could you couldn’t
Unknown Speaker
hear No, no, no, no. No, I’ll tell you my two kids gonna be way better athletes than me.
Steve Brown
Okay, cool. Yeah, but you can catch I’ll just you know just putting it out there. Hey man. Good to see you man. Your system man she’s doing a thing in school man got your dad super proud man. I’m proud man. I’m proud man.
Unknown Speaker
I’m a family man something like Huxtable.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah No wait wait No No
Unknown Speaker
No,
Unknown Speaker
we won’t be the hospital’s No, no, no. Why can’t
Unknown Speaker
we say Huxtable the good verse
Unknown Speaker
let’s go all
Unknown Speaker
the way man great job by big teen moms
Santiago Leon
yeah and for everyone knows that terry jones is former Alabama tight end so for everyone well my tidy
Marvin Constant
and former Baltimore Ravens former San Francisco 49
Unknown Speaker
yeah
Santiago Leon
I bought those ravens ontari Hey, I
Unknown Speaker
want to talk about it right now cuz Sunday like crap to me man. Like we went up the prosper we didn’t do anything but we got we got get a chance to turn it around. We don’t have a receiver.
Santiago Leon
When does Brian
Steve Brown
I thought Antonio Brown was gonna come in. He got arrested again. He quit.
Unknown Speaker
Tampa Bay paid his bail for we got to Oh
Unknown Speaker
yeah, yeah, the Ravens have been just fine. I mean, everybody else is chasing second place. We can the city but you
Unknown Speaker
can run the ball.
Unknown Speaker
Boom. Like the dolphins.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, they’re chasing to their dolphins about three, four years away. But you know what,
Steve Brown
I must say this, the dolphins are looking pretty decent. And honestly, I would say two are kind of bringing the offense to life. He he’s doing he’s, he’s performing. I mean, the thing is right now he’s like a game manager so to speak, but he’s doing his thing he had thrown the interception so you know,
Unknown Speaker
yeah, and they play good defense. That’s the thing about it. Like I said, they do a really good job playing defense home and to like say he had a rocky sleeping that he’s thinking of pineapples yet. So
Unknown Speaker
you you know we got
Santiago Leon
Tony Dixon. You know when
Marvin Constant
we’ll have some surprises. For those who don’t know, Tony Dixon just entered the call former Alabama safety former Dallas Cowboy former Washington Redskins, it’s pleasant brother. I told y’all who’s gonna have some fun tonight, baby.
Steve Brown
Amen. Hey. I am thrilled to be on this interview man this show with all the Alabama players that didn’t make a difference. I’m feeling good about
Unknown Speaker
Oh, man. I got my cousin here. What’s happening?
Unknown Speaker
was a little bro. Man. I’m good, man. Good to see Tony. Who’s
Santiago Leon
gonna win the NFC.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. Got the ball last.
Steve Brown
He jumping right on each other. Right? Says Justin. I’m gonna I’ma come up with a couple of questions, man. And we can just go from there. How about this? Let’s let’s talk about a Alabama’s team right now. What are y’all seeing in it? What do y’all see it? Let’s start with the office. Jerry, what do you see?
Unknown Speaker
You know what? I’ll go left on that though. The guys go ahead in front of you.
Unknown Speaker
I saw you there.
Unknown Speaker
He was on me. Yeah. Well, one thing I’m gonna say is is was was definitely apparent about the offense. But now compared to when we play is is truly an offense is dynamic is spread. You have a lot of weapons, you have top receivers that now want to come to the school, we had great receivers, it was just under utilized. And we were we were playing so now you have the philosophy and the mindset that we’re going to beat you on offense where it used to be a defense we’re going to sustain put you down but today we have an offense that can beat you even if the defense and special teams doesn’t show up for the game. So when I’m looking at offers that’s why I say you have this threat everywhere and I love it. You know what it was
Marvin Constant
on three Yours in a cloud of dust.
Steve Brown
It was, yeah, tell ya and yet the offensive offenses have changed. I think when y’all guys played, they had loved the helmets. Um But now, you know. Yeah, yeah.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, like I said, the offense is looking pretty well. I said we know we can be in the past that Matt Jones is playing like a Heisman Trophy winner. Like, Roger Harris is playing like a Heisman Trophy winner. When you quarterback playing at a high level and you able to run the ball like we can, like you say you’re gonna you’re gonna be successful in life saving, just like you start getting some bad weather days you’re not gonna be to be able to pass the ball around. So I think offers a line is starting to come around where we can be able to model some people down and like say is for a person like me they like running the ball like say they’re starting there is gonna be some it’ll be some fun to see a little bit later when it when it starts getting cold.
Unknown Speaker
We’re number one, Terry? Yeah.
Steve Brown
But you know, a Terry, you know, what, you and Marvin, we will, we’re all from Tuscaloosa. But wouldn’t it be something to see a What’s his name? Carry the ball more?
Unknown Speaker
Be Ron Robinson?
Steve Brown
Yes. We need to we need to lobby for that, man. That’s that dude. He he cares. The Rock man.
Unknown Speaker
He really does. Yeah, he does. He does a good job of running the ball. And like I said, it’s just you behind a guy by your lines. Your hairs. He’s just hard to it’s hard to steal cares from?
Marvin Constant
Yeah. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
Well, you know, if I can chime in for a second, I’ll go and interject with Nick Saban’s done over the last five years is something that we never thought was gonna happen, right? Open up. offense. That was even when his first few years there was running the ball and playing the defense. What college football, high school football is all evolved to where you have to put up points. And the way the rules are set up right now, if you’re not playing the way that Alabama and the rest of the teams in sec are playing with the temple, open everything up. You’re not going to execute in a high level. And with a guy like Matt Jones, and I think Matt Jones is a solid quarterback. When you open the game up, and you put your athletes in positions to make plays. And you’re not asking them to do things that they’re not their skill set don’t say they can do. I think you help yourself.
Santiago Leon
Now we thought that Jones is a Heisman candidate. Um, no doubt about it.
Unknown Speaker
But when you when you say Matt Jones, you got to look out there and say Smitty, should also be up for Heisman calm conversations, because I mean,
Unknown Speaker
he’s been doing this for years. Right? But you
Steve Brown
know, what, guys, you know what, but the thing is, I again, I say, I still like the old school way that you guys play because again, and I think I could pick the back of what you said, you know, the rules are different. You can’t even touch receivers now. Right? You know, back in the day tear you know, you were tight in block it, you bet you went fast. It was hard coming off the ball, guys. Now, you can just, you know, that’s why all these quarterbacks now are getting four and 500 yard games, because you can’t really touch anybody. And, and, and, and we’re gonna talk about the defense in a minute. But I see why the defenses are not so good. Because they like, like, Marvin has said so many times. The deepest players are afraid to hit and fear of getting the targeting call and getting put out. But Marvin Marvin, but
Santiago Leon
think about this,
Marvin Constant
but but you know, Steve, you make a very valid point. You know, like back when you play you had that phone path full of nickels. You know, y’all can’t do that. No, you know, that’s, that’s outlawed. So it’s a different day now.
Unknown Speaker
No face.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. And favorite athlete. And next one, probably for the better job of putting his better athletes in position to to win. Well,
Unknown Speaker
you know, interesting, interesting thing about that, you know, the fact that save money is an app program like a professional person team, especially teams who own special team starters when deep Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
starters. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker
you know, that was unheard of. You know, so this is a totally different mindset man,
Marvin Constant
those that cost us but that cost us a good one happens thoughts on specialties to
Unknown Speaker
true true, but you gotta
Unknown Speaker
you gotta look at it like this right? What was the biggest asset when he first came into the college football? What did you think about him?
Marvin Constant
When I get it? If I was the coach, I put him back that return kicks to I’m smart. Give him the ball any way you can. Well What I’m saying is, you always don’t run a risk. You know, so if the good comes with the bad well,
Steve Brown
you know some David walk. I mean, Jalen model to me, he’s nothing but a second coming. Second Coming of David Palmer.
Unknown Speaker
He’s coming. No, no, no, you don’t think so? No. Big difference.
Marvin Constant
What Who is this with this? 601 they keep popping up. Is that Justin?
Santiago Leon
That’s Justin Riley.
Unknown Speaker
It is me man. Don’t difference between what’s going on?
Santiago Leon
Right, Justin? We’re talking about a wattle compared to who guys
Marvin Constant
Hold on. Let me let me let me update Justin. I brought a few surprise guests. I brought Tony Dixon and Jerry Jones on with.
Justin Riley
That’s right. I like I like that lover union.
Marvin Constant
Hello, surprise guests. I know you didn’t know but you know, just
Unknown Speaker
just what’s up, guys.
Unknown Speaker
So, Steven, I was just gonna have a small and a quick debate about poppin Jalen. David Palmer. So that part was quick, right? You couldn’t touch him. But Jalen is explosive, quick. In facts. Like that combination you rarely see. Like you get like pop was only gonna run a 4546 and catch him. Jalen might go to combine and go somewhere for two for three. With exclusiveness. Right? Yeah. So when you saw Henry Rose, Rose fast, right, and then wrote Jalen water from zero to 10. Man explosive, and then he picks up his speed with the ability to make people miss. So his skill set is truly elite in rare that you’re gonna find his archetype and especially in a returner like that.
Steve Brown
Hi. So speaking of speaking of Jaylen waddle gap speaking agenda, there’s a buzz now, they’re saying he might come back. What do y’all think? And if he does come back, do y’all think he should
Unknown Speaker
meet? No, I’m gonna tell you flat out. Dude, you bout to get drafted in the top 15 picks? Sit down. Go get your money. Yeah. First round,
Unknown Speaker
he’s easy to talk to your team P
Unknown Speaker
is one y’all say that look, here’s the here’s what here’s where I look at even Alabama I think how Alabama continue to change the norm of college football. We had the same debate went to a got hurt. Does he come back? Does he go to the drought? This do even have a combine? Right? The talent to Gerald’s point is elite talent. Once you have that elite talent. You’re the decision makers. You don’t you don’t have to come back. Why come back? proving everything you need to in college football. I’m going get the money to
Marvin Constant
Hey, listen, man, like coaches always tell us when you go to school to get a job. If you shouldn’t get the job where you dream. So you better go get it while you can.
Unknown Speaker
You know, your turn job
Steve Brown
based on what they were saying as far as his attitude by he wants to come back. So I mean, I agree with all y’all I I wouldn’t come back if I take the money and run but you know, and honestly, if he does come back, who’s who’s that that was a gruesome injury. So I’m thinking like, Man, it’s gonna be a while before you get back to who you were. You said I’m saying so I wouldn’t risk you see a quick story.
Unknown Speaker
When Marlon Humphrey was, was it was thinking about coming out, you know, be Hong Kong and said smart thing to do. I said, Bobby, I just finished watching. He’s gonna go in the first round. There’s no reason for him to go back and do what proves that he can go top five, trying to get to that second contract, and he just did. Right? Why stick around an extra year to say, Well, you know, I’m trying to help win a championship. And the guys that are getting paid aren’t the players and they’re the ones that don’t get screwed along when they do get hurt. Everybody else is making money except the ones the ones that are putting the butts in the seat. Well, coaches weren’t
Unknown Speaker
well listen and this brings up the exact point that Steve and Steve just brought up early. And then we were talking about because the game has changed. We used to tell these cats to wait because you needed to be more physical right especially off offensive player. The game has changed so much now man you have no reason it makes freshman sophomore wouldn’t when you can come out get out and go and get that money. They don’t practice they don’t get to have contact and Brexit. Everything is changed. Oh landscape has changed. So I’m is different. They’re ready. Now. A lot of these kids coming out after one year of college ball. They’re ready. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker
yeah. In my last year that I was sitting in if you top three rounds Oh no. Trying to get
Steve Brown
a second contract. I feel you because I’m not gonna let things have really changed, man. I’m sure back when y’all play. Half the team left it left the practice field with concussions. Now nobody now now the coaches are leaving the practice field with headaches because nobody wants to be physical. So things have changed a lot.
Unknown Speaker
We would do a full blown scrimmages brother. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
Even with that physical aspect, it these these younger players in these modern day players, they’re way more physical than we were. They’re bigger. They’re stronger. They’re more than what I got.
Steve Brown
I got a disagreement. I got this. No, they’re not. No, they’re not. No, they’re not they they are. I would say they are better, probably better athletes or built better, but they’re not physical. You got a lot of guys out there looking strong and ain’t doing nothing on the field. I’ll give you a perfect example. I
Justin Riley
agree with that.
Steve Brown
I hate Nolan. But look how big being a busy being name is bigger than all of us. Know, he can’t he can’t. He can’t get on the field. You got Come on man is on my mind. physicality. You can be big. Like, like, like, Look, look at look at mark, look at mark. Marvin. Look at mark as beat me. No, no, no. Wherever
Unknown Speaker
you see, you can bring you can bring up the name and I’ll get kicked out we’ll see.
Marvin Constant
Hey, but you know what? I’ll be back again next year because the gap so you’ll probably see him again next year.
Unknown Speaker
Done with a
Marvin Constant
mustache. mustache ECA this year will not count against any player. So they can all come back next year.
Unknown Speaker
He won’t even
Justin Riley
even kill him mana has been in Texas a&m for 10 years.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, yeah. All right. So Steve, this is where this is where I’m gonna disagree again. All right. So when when people always talk about physical and the way these young people are playing, it’s not necessarily their fault, right? You can hold them for the way that they’re being taught how to play, right? When we got when we were getting taught how to play the game of football, it was all you know, hat and hands. Right? Being physical. Knocking guys back. Right. The game is played in space right now, comparable to when all of us 40 year old guys play. But these young people, they are stronger and more explosive than we were when we played. And when you hear the impact between two of them. Three of them for them a whole team. You see the difference? Right. Derrick? Henry? Right. seen him play. Now. I don’t care what generation of what year that Derek played. Still the physical ballplayer, that offensive line that Alabama has right now, compared to when we were in school. They’re they’re gigantic compared to us. Physically, they would manhandle A lot of us up front. Right. But again, the game is not emphasized in that area. So we’re not looking at it saying oh yeah, they’re physical those young people are physical and tough as heck when I was playing
Steve Brown
is to me then explain. Okay, back when y’all when y’all play mapping up a
Unknown Speaker
we have to now we have some guys that look real good when hit none.
Steve Brown
Okay, Alabama, Alabama, D line, Alabama’s whole defense more stood. Okay. They had you you had your trainers, you had your trainers, you had your strength trainers and all that Tony I had that right. Y’all know they were all right now. The defense has some state of the art guys that’s all often the science and all that and they get pushed up and down to fear. They can’t get any penetration. They can’t get a sack. Explain that. All right,
Marvin Constant
you know what? going on? I’ll interject with this. The one thing I can say that I see is different. It’s the personality match. They I’m applying this on social media, because everybody wants to be everybody’s free. Everybody wants to do that plays a large role into it. TJ tell you this was in practically June. We was homeless. But you know, we was gonna go ahead though it wouldn’t man Listen, we don’t be friends. We walk out the field but we don’t go out during practice. They don’t do that. No more everybody want to be buddy, buddy. Man back when we play What? No, buddy. But if you want another team we’re gonna talk about
Unknown Speaker
right but Marvin when you look at it, right? These young people can communicate with each other. Easily, right when we’re playing Who had a cell phone to call up and talk, right? Who had a way to connect on via social media? So yeah, we didn’t see each other, we didn’t care. And the only guys that we didn’t care about the guys that we saw every single day, so it’s easy to knock these young people for what they are now. But this is who they are. I mean, when we were coming up, the mo head, knock this to, like really covers us and when we play, but we look at them and say the same thing. So these young people, they are what they are, but it’s a lot of things on us that we that we’re accepting their behavior in the way that they’re acting is not a TJ I mean, TJ can fill you in on that. He’s called to high school ball.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, they’d like said just the mentality of teenagers nowadays, just cuz from a standpoint of, they got everything at their fingertips, like a social media, cell phones, like there’s a lot of stuff that’s going on. But like I said, we’d worked on that crap. When I tell my kids all the time when I’m coaching, like y’all don’t go outside and just play football. There you go. Like, I don’t know, go outside and just play through my buzzsumo. Like, y’all play video games, and then we’re gonna come over here. Jonah, feels like, I just stopped playing football, my junior year, but I knew how to be physical. But I’m playing. You’re playing with my neighborhood. So when I say football on it when
Marvin Constant
you know what it is TJ? What? They don’t drink out the hose pipe. No mo man. They don’t do that.
Unknown Speaker
Young people for technology, right, in the way that they’re training their bodies. I wish that when we were coming up, Tony, TJ Marvin, we had access to all of this stuff. Now hold on, right.
Marvin Constant
coming out of high school. I was benching 460 squat and 625
Unknown Speaker
so but but but yeah, he come he come in at a different angle, though. Marvin, you know, because if you think about it during our timeframe, that’s when we’re talking about these went on to win all these cats will bind these these, these chambers they were sleeping in it was all that was the state at all still have a hard time right now and in the supplements, it really started hidden, heavy wheels coming out, you know, but to DeRose point I get 107 also get what Steve was saying because we see things we saw with physicality. We saw that we were going head to head head one. You know, if you come with the field, we could hit you. Even if you didn’t have ball we can knock you up. Right. So this wholesomeness that smoke is talking about is I truly understand. He’s saying he’s cats. When I go to the practice of Dallas Cowboys, we’re not in our pop up and go to practice. Like I’m saying, you know, good old talent, good talent. But the point is, you go and see these cats how lean they are, how tough they are physical torque that they have the ability to stop and start and take off. This is totally different. And when we played I’m telling them, I can’t.
Steve Brown
So Tony, Tony, you said when you go to some of the Dallas Cowboy practices, you see all this stuff, but based on the record, don’t you on your suit back up one more damn time? Goodness. I could.
Unknown Speaker
But one check one play. Come on, man.
Steve Brown
Hey, Terry mask you.
Unknown Speaker
I mean, South Cobb High School in Austin, you know, I’m here.
Steve Brown
Okay, well, I need to come check y’all out. But being a coach, has it ever been a time where you? You just wanted to put your foot in? Somebody asked.
Unknown Speaker
Once. It’s once it’s once or twice a week. I’m like that. And I and I’ve tried a couple of times. So I don’t videotape crisis. So I ain’t got no ain’t no ain’t no footage, or no proof? I do. So I’m good.
Unknown Speaker
You know what, Steve, um, one of my biggest hiccups on what’s going on because again, I love coaching. I coached I evaluated talent. We both played on every level. The thing that’s missing with a lot of these young people even at you said, you want to get back to defense University Alabama. A lot of guys aren’t teaching a lot of these coaches aren’t good teachers.
Unknown Speaker
Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I
Steve Brown
know, Gerald. So Gerald, what you’re saying to me, is that what I’ve been saying all along, I know you’re gonna be nice cuz you’re professional guy. I’m not. Okay. So the off the defensive coordinator is garbage. Keeping 100. All right.
Unknown Speaker
Look at it. Look at that. Look at that this this angle, right. All right. So when Ben was my man, oh, Davis. Were defensive line coaches at Alabama. Right? Because again, I evaluated all those guys. We were thinking about drafting a couple of them. When I worked in Buffalo, you saw a lot of those guys getting knocked back like they not offered to fly me back. They control the line of scrimmage, right? They have the same caliber of players there. Now, I’m telling you that they do. Right. And everybody’s gonna say, well, they’re not drinking out of the hose pipe and all that other stuff. No, it’s the technique. Right? on a basis. And the standards is changed, right? And I know my boy, Freddie Roach is there now. Right? Freddie was all that Lou, Lou young boy, when he’s coming up. Right. He’s now the defensive line coach. I have not seen this year, in the last couple years when they had the other guy that was there. I haven’t seen offensive lineman. Nick’s getting snapped back. Like when Chris ronk was there, and both Davis with both the line coaches. And that’s where I see the whole defense is change. Right. Right. And the defensive coordinator, I don’t know where they got him from right. And, and
Unknown Speaker
not not to go.
Santiago Leon
Gerald, he got him going.
Unknown Speaker
To get TJ now we talk all the time and Marvin and one of the things that that I thought separated Coach Saban from a lot of the coaches that I’ve ever been around because I’ve sat in with those guys a lot. A whole coaching spiel for six or seven years. I got into scouting. Marvin, TJ and I used to go to the coach, savings football camp, right? It’s the best ran football camp in the entire world. When you look at college football, I’ve worked a ton of them. I’m not going to sit here and tell you not because I went to university. But we weren’t even close in terms of teaching young people how to play the game. Proper with technique fundamentals. When it when we did the high school, Kevin Marvin and today can answer the when we did the high school camp. And we did the little kids camp. Right? It was technique. Anything, right? To the point that if Kirby had to instruct a drill or drill, they’re teaching it just like they would with the Alabama players, right? And then Kirby would give it to the rest of the coaches, right, because we’re independent contractors, we were out there, you told us what to do. And we went out there got our own opposition groups, and we did it. Now Coach Saban used to walk around, right. And he said, come there and sit down and stand my phone stand up and listen to you coach. And if you weren’t using the same terminology, that he was teaching his guys, not only would you get ripped, Kirby would get ripped, but he would step in and do the drill the right way, and instruct those young wins. So what I’m seeing now is either somebody slacking in terms of teaching the proper technique of playing football all the way through and and you know,
Steve Brown
nothing those same guys who are not getting penetration and and who are not getting sacks. Those are stewards so that you what you’re saying is totally true. They’re not being taught the right way. I’ve been saying this the whole year, when you when you get five and six and seven stars, if that exists on your D line and you can’t get you get like how many sacks on the year two or three. And you’re at your at your Alabama? That’s unheard of
Unknown Speaker
that you know, Gerald Gerald right. 31. That young freshmen? He’s a problem. Yeah, he might be the best pass rusher that’s come through Alabama in a long time. He can get with it, man.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. That’s Derrick Thomas incarnate. Rose back. Wow.
Marvin Constant
Nice to be coached up, you know, and like you said, Gerald, Coach, you know, with those camps, he was always hands on. You know, that was that was one of the things about it, you know, even with little kids, you right? You remember seeing a year old kids, a jerk, you know, day after the first day, I can’t be in the dorm room hot. Water down. He won’t know more. They only work if they like I sign up. I just came for a pitcher with Coach on
Unknown Speaker
how detailed he was right. All right. He probably still is right. We used to have to sit down and write evaluations on each kid.
Unknown Speaker
Yep.
Unknown Speaker
In our position group, right. And I’m not talking about you can make it up all year Marvin constant needs to work on the hand, no details. So when when that young person left. He had something to work on whenever he returned back home. And Coach Saban used to go through and if he had 1000 And 50 young people in his camp. He went back through and read every single last one of them. Wow. Write him twice. Send a kid. I’ve seen it myself.
Marvin Constant
Yo, tj. Yeah, remember that you’ve kept when he was cussing them kids out in the camp director called us up talking about y’all need to quit cussing at the kid. He want to talk to coach. Yeah, stop cussing at the kid. He would want cussing. We were cussing at no kids.
Unknown Speaker
He lit into you remember the day that it was real hot out here. And he always has the what’s the speech? Well to me. And he went off on. I mean, there are nine and 10 year old kids.
Marvin Constant
Well, you got to put this part in store to have a little bit taller than the bank so they can barely even step over the bank. Step over the bags. We had
Unknown Speaker
Marvin, we remember the day we had. TJ remember the day that we had to start the entire camp over? We have way into it. And it wasn’t going the way that he wanted to. He got the horn blew up. Bop, bop, bop, bop. Started over. We went back to stretch.
Marvin Constant
Yeah, we’re talking about seven to 13 year olds.
Steve Brown
Hey, so. So let me let me ask you a question. Do y’all think that the coaches now are a whole lot more lenient because of this so called transfer portal thing? Because now you just say, hey, at a player, they ready to transfer?
Unknown Speaker
Okay, what
Marvin Constant
let me let me ask you real quick got this. I’m gonna tell you what I really think this is what I see. And this is what I think I might be totally wrong here. But I think as coaches gotten older, he’s starting to worry about his legacy. So he’s given more control to the younger guys, who are gonna go on to say, hey, this guy came from Nick Saban coaches tree. So he’s given him a lot more responsibility than he did in the past. You know?
Steve Brown
Not mine, Mama, Mama, Mama. Ain’t no. Ain’t nothing in me don’t believe that he gave all this authority to Pete golden.
Marvin Constant
But more than he did in the past? Yes. Yeah, I
Justin Riley
agree with I agree with Steve because I feel like now he’s taking more control back because I don’t feel like he really fully trusts golden. And maybe some of the other coaches. I don’t know about Freddie Roach. I’m a Freddie Roach guy. But I gotta think that he didn’t fully trust Golding. So I think a lot of what we’re seeing defensively right now is a direct correlation. To Nick Saban himself. I could be wrong. I mean, what do you feel this thing?
Steve Brown
Or I think that maybe he’s starting to unleash more of Charlie strong now that you understand some you can’t. He’s a positions coach, and he’s doing what he’s told to do. And then he’s, he’s a linebacker, but he’s, I guess he’s learning the D line. That makes sense.
Unknown Speaker
He’s been around the D lab for a long time, Freddie’s. Listen, I’m not I’m not knocking Freddie. As a coach. It’s just my standards and expectations. That University is so high, because you’ve seen it, right. It’s a standard that’s there. That once you fall off, you’re looking back my Hold on. And now I get the whole, I get the whole fact of them holding teams to 17 or 18 points like they did 10 years ago. It’s not happening anymore. The rules
Marvin Constant
7.6 whatever.
Unknown Speaker
The rules aren’t going to allow you to do that anymore. Right. But when I watch those guys on on film, and you don’t see attitude place, you don’t see
Unknown Speaker
no meaning.
Unknown Speaker
That inside zone, used to get knocked back by this defensive lineman and he said, he jet forklift, his offensive lineman into the backfield, and you saw the inside linebacker, step up and smack and it was no more forward leaning running backs going forward. Like I’m sitting there, like the most disgusting play that I saw last year was, I mean, I don’t mean to go off on a tangent was an LSU game. When the little running back Clyde lair, Edward Edward Hilaire hit for three yards. And then he pushed the pile for five more and got a first down more than one, you know, attitude plays last year. And then you see a Nick Saban team with 12 on the field. No. Does he know what happened?
Steve Brown
Another thing that I’ve noticed as well is they’re not numb. Marvin kind of defended this a little bit but I’m, I’m with Marvin a little bit, but then again, I’m straddling the fence. You’re not hitting anymore. What they’re doing now is reaching and trying to trying to strip the ball. That’s it’s not no hitting. Like for instance, when they make contact with the ball carrier the ball carriers getting an extra three to four yards because they’re trying to pull the ball away instead of hitting them. Right. So
Unknown Speaker
then you’re targeting,
Unknown Speaker
targeting.
Unknown Speaker
So good, Steve, when you look at it, right? Like hitting, like what Tony used to do to people take their souls right. You know, when TJ subblock people TJ used to try to drive them through the earth. And I’ve seen him do that we used to make pads like TJ really don’t even don’t even I we only want it today like that, right? No, listen, in talk all that they want. If TJ caught him on the line of scrimmage, it’s a matchup.
Steve Brown
We’re looking at TJ if TJ didn’t do it.
Unknown Speaker
Hey, but I’m, like small talking about it. But it’s all fundamentals like mental guys are such great athletes, that coaches don’t teach these kids. The little bitty thing. Right? Like, I will tell you this from a high school standpoint, and I see, I guess it’s their schools around here. And I see they got tremendous athletes. There’s a high school down here, Langston Hughes, they got some 10th graders out here. They like a small Juco. And but their defensive coordinator does such a great job of teaching them details and teaching them the fundamentals. So somebody go back to the high school coaches, but then you get some of these college coaches where they does worry about kids being at being athletic, and they will not Oh, he’s good enough to get around here. So that’s why you won’t see that not bad. Oh, see, don’t push no see don’t bench presses. Because they think that just to jump around and then that’s when you see guys pushing a pound for 567 yards, or you see the inside zone because it’s all about details and fundamentals, and being disciplined. And so that’s a different light. You talk about difference we are our generation the generation now is we was a lot more disciplined because we like I said we weren’t as great athletes and some of these kids are so they’ll sit here and jump around so they’re gonna fit to chase it down from the backside but you get a guy somebody like you say like Kenny Smith for like a Morehead and a C here and squeeze and go down the line and do a little bit of things and make no sound so like say, Mo Hey, anybody look him Kendall Morehead. You will not think he’ll be a good football player that he is looking at his body. But a little bit of things that he did. Yeah. I
Steve Brown
like Kindle Kindle was built like Kindle was built like an IV bag. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
But it’s the truth. No, you you know you straight up man. You know, I got two teenage boys right now it’s plan. And I’m not going to get off on that tangent. But just to build on what you all were saying. was an anomaly. If you ran up on someone, it was more athletic than you. The issue when we play right today is that lettuces on weighs more so right my boys even though I don’t coach my hand men in the coaching profession. I know just from technique, the small little things your foot placement, this placement, angle, that angle, I sit down my boys for five minutes. Now I’ve taught them more than the coaches taught them a whole whole season. This is high school. Now to go back to what we’re seeing with Alabama. I still think this I still think it’s just part of that process that we’ve seen because NFL the quality of what you’ve seen on NFL defenses going down. Year after year. Quality in college is going on here. The reason Alabama’s the Clemson’s and George’s and all these have been sustaining is because it’s still been teaching technique. And I think now is catching up to where you get these high power recruits. When they come in. They try to use this technique. They don’t win everything of winning athletically, so they don’t take any matters.
Marvin Constant
Tony, Tony, Tony, you know what it is, though? Tony, I tell you, this is what I’ve seen. I’ve seen a lot of coaches head coaches, pick coaches who they say what good recruiters, but they’re not good technicians good at teaching technique. It’s like these coaches have value and coaches who good at recruiting just so they can get the guys in. But if you’re not developing them once you get them, what is the point?
Unknown Speaker
So I’ll make two points on this on it on this note, I’ll take it but goes back to why would you tell somebody like water will come out right now. Because if you’re going to the NFL based on athleticism, it’s not going to last long. You’re trying to get that second contract and it’s over and the chances of you as a safety cornerback into the infield team where someone’s going to teach you technique that you hadn’t attained. You’re not going to get it so what does that mean? The days of planned up, you know seeing we’re seeing now people playing 1516 years. When that athleticism goes away. What do you have to fall back on?
Unknown Speaker
fundamentals. If you
Steve Brown
sold me a shot is so is it safe to say that? I think Jeremy mentioned something about space. Um, the game is going away from Smash Mouth until whoever you can find the space pretty much on office.
Unknown Speaker
Mm hmm. It still physical but the point,
Unknown Speaker
right, but and I say and I tell you one more thing I let Jared get to in a second. I tell you one of the things a lot of the coaches when you start seeing them, they are they are textbook coaches where they haven’t actually done the plays they have actually played the game they haven’t actually been out there on in, they haven’t been in the trenches, right and didn’t so you’re trying to ask them to do something that they have never physically done. Like this thing, buddy, Tony probably backpedal in ain’t no telling how many years but he knows the footwork where he can go out there and see it like he doing with his sons and be able to teach them those little bitty things like saying I do the same thing on my team and my eight year old, I go out there and they want to play football. And like you said, this is I’m coaching that I’m teaching them a little bit of things about this, how you catch the ball, this how you want to round this, how you get into a stance. This how you attack somebody, that’s how you tackle somebody properly. In a lot of there’s a lot of coaches now, like Marvin said, they great recruiters, they never played the game. They got the mouthpiece, and they taught the game. But they never done it. They never ask you to play the game. They have never seen it come into full speed. So they don’t know how to teach somebody how to use their hands. How to bet on how to play the coverage. How to play the ball.
Steve Brown
What you know what I’ve done my research on Pete Golding, he hadn’t played for nobody. I ain’t seen him on the PlayStation.
Unknown Speaker
You guys are golden, right? You guys, you guys are all over Pete, right? Oh, yeah. wakelee. Gerald. Here’s what you got. Right?
Steve Brown
I’m obsessed waiting, right?
Unknown Speaker
Pete golden didn’t hire Pete golden, right. Pete golden is not the one that every week going out. And he’s the boss of peacoat. And right people golden has the boss. And you always put it back on the head of the group, whoever is leading that group is really in charge. Right? So you are allowing someone to do the job at whatever level that he’s doing it. It’s on you. You have the chance to hire whoever you want to hire. If you want to hire p golden FP gold and run your defense that’s on p
Steve Brown
i so so jail, jail. Imagine this. You You want a job and a Alabama’s demons coordinator. I’m fine.
Unknown Speaker
You want it? Well, you must.
Unknown Speaker
You Tony, you want you want
Unknown Speaker
corporate bro.
Unknown Speaker
You want to go back and coordinate Alabama?
Justin Riley
Hey, you’re coaching fundamentals. That’s what we need right now. So being where you’re supposed to be, you know, the small things like we’ve been talking about, and that’s what’s been missing. Today,
Unknown Speaker
Steve and Justin, right? Yes. Okay. Study the entire FCC. Tell me Give me three schools that are playing good defense.
Unknown Speaker
Nobody.
Justin Riley
Well, before Georgia’s players got hurt, they were playing the best defense and in the conference, until we start losing players, but as a whole. Yeah, you’re right.
Unknown Speaker
That’s an excuse, right? Wait, when Georgia was who was Georgia playing, putting up those numbers?
Steve Brown
Exactly. Because you know what they were playing. They’re playing cupcake teams before they play Bama. And then those numbers started to diminish right
Unknown Speaker
now. Now when you look at it, just like a lot of people don’t say well, Cincinnati is playing real good defense. That’s fine. There you go. Now when you have to line up, and you have to play against three quality receivers, right, with the running back that can get in your job at any point, with a left tackle that’s gonna be taken in the first round with a quarterback that’s playing real good. You know, how good of a defensive coordinator are you? Right? So, I mean, Pete Golden’s giving up gave up a ton of points against Ole Miss. But Ole Miss been digging in Alabama for a while
Unknown Speaker
now. Yes, sir.
Unknown Speaker
So, I’m not
Unknown Speaker
gonna get you a damn job.
Unknown Speaker
Oh, you poor
Steve Brown
man. Get out my damn business.
Unknown Speaker
Because if you look at it, if you if I go back and you look at you say Jeromy Pruitt. No, I’m Kirby smart. Right? Kevin Steele, when they were defensive coordinators for Alabama, Alabama defenses pretty good. Right? Right. Look at the assistant coaches, and look how long they stayed around. And now you look at who’s getting hired at Alabama, right? The same quality causes aren’t there, in my opinion, right? There is people will not be for saying in my opinion, because when you coach, your teacher first, right when I call most coaches that came up the Bill Parcells, the bell check and all those guys, they were right. So if you’re not, I don’t care how well you can recruit and how good you get the five and six star players in whatever star they are, right? If you can’t break those young men down and teach them the game of football, right? And play it at a high level. It’s a waste of time respect you as a coach, you. You can go out there right now with Alabama on your chest, go wherever you want. I’m telling you that they don’t have a lot to do recruitment. But when you get the talent, you cultivate it. And you say, you know what, I remember when that guy couldn’t run around. And now you said Man, look at him, round them up. Julio Jones is the best receiver in NFL history to me when he was at Alabama, is the reason why AJ green went in front of him, because he wasn’t getting to learn how to play receiver. Ryan, Gerald.
Santiago Leon
Well, one question from the YouTube chat. Do you think Nick Saban will reunite with will a month champ next season?
Unknown Speaker
No. Hey,
Unknown Speaker
y’all have any consideration?
Unknown Speaker
Well, back on my tangent now. Right. To me, what’s missing right now, in the game of football, at every level from players, the evaluators and the coaches. is the point is is a whole way of developing and cultivating your town around. Coaches develop coaches, right. And I hate seeing coaches fall fell forward. Right? You’ve seen so many of these sec coaches in defensive gurus they go somewhere and they get those Molly walk knocked out of them. So now that you they lose their job at whatever University, you pick them back up tonight Come in my building, because I know that the way that we played ball 50 years ago, you can still do it. Well, to me, what about those young people that’s around there that’s been working their tails off? Have you developed them yet to become a defensive coordinator? Right, so I’m giving him if he gets a job, he gets a job. I’m not knocking anybody from working and feeding their families. But I mean, we saw him in Florida. We saw him at South Carolina. What’s gonna change? He was a boss.
Steve Brown
I’m with I’m with you, jail, develop who you got. And now I would make I would make one. I will make one switch up. I would, I would take a Golding off the field and put a challenge Trump
Marvin Constant
My question is, is he development a fantasy football league for coaches older? I mean, cuz you got all these former head coaches, who didn’t make it at Alabama? I mean, what do we do with all these former head coaches?
Unknown Speaker
All right, so
Unknown Speaker
he got coach Pete Oba.
Unknown Speaker
Like, everybody wants to everybody wants to get pushed ahead, right. Right. When you look at Alabama, right? If you get sneezed on by Nick, right, everybody’s gonna say your great cuts, right? If two are through a password you’re gonna say to I develop to into a great quarterback right? If to a brand new offense and put up the craziest numbers and since whoever Joe burrow is probably the only one that put up numbers like he did. Now you get called a guru. But it’s not necessarily the truth. Right? You got to go back and really research a lot of these guys and figure out that I really been and what they’ve done with the talent around them and how
Santiago Leon
exactly Marvin TJ and Gerald a big Ray says hi. Was Ray. Big Rig no idea who that is. We
Unknown Speaker
all know big raise a Marshall
Santiago Leon
and Tony
Steve Brown
Oh, so So write write write it, write it write it and say hello to me. And say I made a mistake. I don’t think he knows you.
Unknown Speaker
where they’re
Steve Brown
at. You know, I met let me say this Jr. Now you You said something about the coaches or whatever. And and I would say this, now you know, right now, Alabama is dominating the NFL. You know that. They came from saving they came from the saving tree.
Marvin Constant
But look at the coaches though. Look at get married as head coach. Look at Colorado. Take a look at all He’s from these head coaches that left Alabama. A lot of them are sucking right now.
Unknown Speaker
Oh, really? Well,
Unknown Speaker
you say all of them, okay?
Unknown Speaker
Not all of them. A lot of them.
Unknown Speaker
perspective, right? So the hardest thing to do is the hardest thing to do is when you leave a place, and you’re truly not confident in your own ability, take that place with you. And you try to run wherever you go as if it’s Alabama. Try to take that name that came with you. Yeah, it’s coach x. You try to be like coach x. Now, the coaches that have been successful on that from the saving tree are the guys that form their own way of doing it and also implemented a lot of what Coach Saban has taught them, right. So you got Jimbo, Jimbo is a successful coach. You’d say, right. Yeah.
Steve Brown
Matter of fact, as a matter of fact, Texas a&m is really slipping up
Unknown Speaker
the rankings. Right, right.
Steve Brown
Well, the quarterback is 2531.
Unknown Speaker
Same thing with a lot of the guys that leave Bella check, right? They try to be many bills, and you can’t do that. But if you go back and you study your history, and you look at the guys that left, the bill walls, coats and tree, those guys are successful, right? Because they were allowed to be themselves. And they weren’t dominated by our overbearing personality over a period of time, right? So Kirby has been successful. Why? Because Kirby’s always been curvy. Alright, yeah.
Marvin Constant
Nick Kirby was always
Justin Riley
but he was also allowed to be
Marvin Constant
a lot of these coaches. You don’t see that personality? And like you said, we’re even with Bella chick. Okay. Yeah, Bella, tip one a lot of games. You worked for Bella, check with Eddie, you got Tom Brady, you can we same thing, Alabama, when you got the best horses in the stable, it’s easy to win. Now when you go to a team that didn’t have the same level of talent. You got to coach you got to be able to coach for real. When you don’t have though. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker
I might add one more dynamic.
Unknown Speaker
Though it on my phone.
Unknown Speaker
It’s on my add one more dynamic. And here’s the dynamic. When you talk about Bill, check, when you talk about saving, we talk all these coaches are great. Once you establish that process to play as the players run.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, it’s a player, it’s a player’s game. Again,
Unknown Speaker
it goes back to the BPM if you have these upperclassmen don’t know the techniques in the town have a talent to coach up the the younger classmen. Right puts more pressure on those coaches who who set who are classified or guru, because they’ve had all these first round picks. They’re coaching him proved him, right.
Unknown Speaker
So you know what, Tony, you know what pomp, so if we even step away from football when you said upperclassmen and leadership? I remember when I showed up to Bama, right? And you guys remember crazy here. I had the broken hand.
Unknown Speaker
Y’all saw me to
Unknown Speaker
listen, in about the first two days there was like, Listen, you gotta go. You gotta go. Right? But I remember, um, Tony sitting me down. Right? And we’re talking about scheduled and he’s like, Hey, listen, man. What do you want to do? Because I remember I said an article I want to graduate because, you know, I was gonna be the first one out my family to graduate, my dad being Jamaican come to United States on maybe a fifth or second grade reading level, right? You live it for most of the part, right? So I’m coming. I’m saying listen, I’m the six out of seven, right? The seven of us. And Tony sat me down and said, All right, listen, this is what you’re going to do. Make sure you go to your advisor, you may let your advisor do your schedule. Because if you want to stick around here for six or seven years and not get a dad going on degree. Yeah, you keep on letting that guy I’m gonna put his name out there that guy do your schedule, because you’re going to graduate to retire. Right? So I’m sitting here like, why does this guy have so much interesting, I know we got the same last name, but he saw something in me that I didn’t see him myself. So when he put that in my head, I, anybody else that came up unto me, same thing when I was coaching all my players graduate with master’s degrees. So when I had to talk to my man, Marvin, I’m like, Marvin, you know what? We sitting around here in you know, that’s excess off the field on the field. We need to graduate a year back and finished a year every day. Hey, Jim,
Marvin Constant
let me let me interject one quick thing. I finally told Tony, that we used to be watching him. Like why is Tony doing this? We like why why Tony, we always try to figure out why Tony do what Tony me and Jerry used to be watching.
Unknown Speaker
I’m sitting here like why is Tony the only one in the business school. On the team dressed up. He showed up in period five He don’t even care what coaches do don’t Stan tool. Does he gonna graduate? Yeah. Like, Tony, he, you are way ahead of us. And he was gonna graduate like I’m sitting here like, man, we don’t go back to the dorm have fun, ABC and D and Tony sitting there studying, showing up to class on time. taking those dressed apart, look apart is always been model ready. But I said, yo, Tony’s doing it. I’m gonna knock it out to
Santiago Leon
girl you should be the coach. Hey,
Unknown Speaker
what’s wrong several years.
Justin Riley
Real quick while you’re talking about how you got to Alabama, can you actually tell a story about how you got to Alabama? How Dabo Swinney discovered you? I love the story. I don’t know if you’ve told it. Yeah, but this is a pretty cool story. I hadn’t heard it.
Unknown Speaker
So I’m back in high school in burtonsville high in burtonsville Maryland Paint Branch high school, I had the opportunity to play with the number one player at that time. Darnell dockett. So everybody in America was coming up to the school and I was a recruit I was being recruited. But I wasn’t highly recruited, as Donnie was. And Coach Sweeney came up. And I’m in the hallway and walking through, but my high school head coach Bob winter, grabbed them say, Hey, listen, I know you came up here to watch our docket. But check this guy out right? Long story short, like what I did on film, and offered me a scholarship. So then he turns the story into I went up to get the cow. But I ended up coming back with the calf and the calf calf calf. co sweet. And I go back, and we still talk weekly and I’m so happy for what are you doing out there and Clemson. Jared, real quick, what
Santiago Leon
do you think about that the whole recruiting system, like the ratings and everything, you for it, or you’re not really agreement with it,
Unknown Speaker
um, for anything that helps the player, right? So when we’re coming up, and I know everybody’s gonna say, Well, you know, these kids have too much. You know, followers in too much cloud. Listen, when I was coming up, I did stories just so I can get some recognition. Right. I made sure that I wanted to be in the era of getting a BMI or my own hype machine. Right? If I was out right now, and I was coming out, I would have gone viral for some of the stuff that I said. I did a couple of articles and I’m blasting people, just so that when you hear about Jerome Dixon or smoke, like it’s gonna come with something because I read a lot of Ricky Henderson’s book and all that other stuff in Dr. Because we all came up in the time of primetime. It’s done ourselves as much as our generation say, Well, you know, well, you know, these guys are doing this on social media, if we had some immediate will go nuts. All of us was looking for a camera when we played, okay, who did extra curl so he can go out and have a gun show only knew when he moved ball head and he had that model look on anybody. All right. TJ knew that he was young, mais looking type guy. So everybody had their own little, little tree to go into and get some shade up under there too. And it really was looking for the light. Like these young people, they’re doing what they’re doing. But at some point fame gets gets into your head and, and you lose the the process of becoming a professional becoming a true artist, and perfecting your art. And that’s where we had guys like Tony Cornelius Griffin, Chris Samuels, that was always on our backs and telling us listen, I don’t care. How good Did you think you are? You still got to keep working at your craft. And I don’t think these young people are doing the same. They’re doing it just so they can have a YouTube video or Instagram famous. Yeah, we’re always looking at to impress Tony and training and Kef so they can so I can get some props. When I walked in the room. There’s been a young guy there saying they can trust me when I got on the field. That’s what I did it for. I didn’t do it for everybody else. I did it for all the guys that was in my room that I didn’t want laughing with
Marvin Constant
trash that I knocked people out.
Justin Riley
Let me let me pick it. Let me piggyback off of that for each of you guys who were some teammates that really challenged you and made you better as a player.
Unknown Speaker
I’ll go last you older guys go first. Thank you. Oh, man. I’m young and fresh. I just hit 40 the other day.
Unknown Speaker
A young man. No, go ahead.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I thought I might be like somebody like Tony, like this guy’s like that is from like from Tuscaloosa. He from Pitkin county from West Alabama. And guys, as you kind of you get a chance to kind of know like, I never knew Tony before he got there, but we were 2030 minutes away. But you saw seeing the older guys and seeing the things that they did. And you want to kind of model those guys I tend to be around Chris, why he was like you said why he was the villain. I say all those different type of even, like, able to tie it in there without before. Welcome and like this listening to him understanding the process. And like that kind of what made me want to come koshka I saw how these guys coach me up. Coming up in my, in my days when I was a freshman coming up and knee surgery end up getting the chance to play the two freshmen, lazy just Paul Hogan, guys like that you got to get the chance to watch those guys. And like you said, Be a professional day in and day out. And like I said, it’s just, like so many like the all the guys that we keep up with. Lately, you can tell like, we had a lot of mutual respect for each other the entire time. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
No, man, I’ll be I’ll be honest, man, it was. As crazy as it may sound, and I know some people not you know, like to hear it, it wasn’t a lot of guys that I’ve truly looked up to when I first got to that program. You know, a little bit, my class was a first full recruiting class coming off of that, um, sanctions that they had from some issues after you know, 92 you know, so it was it was a lot of cats. Now I can name some people like the Kevin siglos of the world, right? Where they were just quality people and was out there doing it. But I’ll tell you, man, who impacted me the most words are truly the coaches. I’m not saying it because Jr’s on the phone, but his dad was like a big thing to me, man. So yeah, you know, so for me, coming from a school where, um, let us sit out Wait, I didn’t know what the hell a cover seeks. And all that was coming from school I came from. So I literally had become a student of the game to understand how to play it. So I had to rely more than a coaches to teach you that. So I inherently had to pass it down to people like JIRA. You know, I came in and say, you know, hey, this is what I got. And I tried to prod to mimic, or at least be have the championship mindset that I thought was needed to get us where we’re trying to go, because people don’t understand how trashed and we cover how bad we were, you know, because we didn’t have a talent. We were playing a team hard for about two quarters, but we couldn’t sustain it. Because we just didn’t have the deal. You know, so so it was very hard, in some cases, to latch on to some of the upperclassmen I had because it came off the draft of winning the 92 championship, if you will. All those cats love the big boys routes on rough state and all these cats know, a couple years before I got there. So it was truly rebuilding, though. Yeah, for me, it was more coaches and players.
Marvin Constant
Tony, you made a very valid point, man, when I say very bad, because coach drowsy was probably the most influential person to me, because the guy who was in front of me, he didn’t want to talk to me. He didn’t want to tell me nothing. Because he knew I was coming forward. Hey,
Unknown Speaker
he,
Marvin Constant
he ended up in our lockers were beside each other. You’re 44 and 45. But when I say he had nothing for me, he didn’t want to talk to me at all. So you know, co drowsy was definitely the most influential person to me at Alabama, because no matter what it was, you know, he was always the person you know, hey, you do this right? Do this, do this, do this. But the guy who was in front of me, yeah, he had that for me.
Unknown Speaker
No, I tell you what,
Unknown Speaker
anytime anytime you self conscious, you’re gonna lose your job to care coming in. You’re not gonna give your all to the kid.
Marvin Constant
He didn’t give me nothing at all. So
Unknown Speaker
I saw the same thing in the field. So that’s a whole nother conversation.
Justin Riley
Marvin told the papers that the guy who was there previously good thing he loved it. Position taken anyway.
Unknown Speaker
Hey, man, listen, I got ruined him.
Marvin Constant
DuBose called me into his office. He had the paper in his hand. I was like, what a man asked me a question I asked. Coach, what do you want me to do you?
Justin Riley
and Travis pero was never the same after that his career is garbage.
Marvin Constant
So if y’all didn’t notice, this is what the reporter asked me. You know, what did you think about Travis leave him out of me. I was planning on starting with a he was here not anyway, it is what it is. And he printed it just like this. Got me in his office.
Unknown Speaker
What is this?
Unknown Speaker
Well, just to piggyback off that down what Tony said. And Marvin said and even though my man TJ when I first came down now I’m coming from, you know, burtonsville, Maryland that half the time I don’t even understand what big TJ was saying to me or Tony I’m sitting there just shaking my head like Alright, yeah, yeah. Got you. I got you. But my opposition group really helped me in with all the guys that was in front of me that I looked up to. Right the calf Bailey’s, Marlo Lewis, Tony Dixon, Marcus Spencer. All those guys like they put their arms around, because it wasn’t that I was a knucklehead, but at any time,
Unknown Speaker
yeah, I’ll go off now. Yep.
Unknown Speaker
And Tony and Tony and Trey knew it. So when they started that when they started seeing me go off, it just kind of grabbed was like, Hey, listen, smoke, calm down. And I had so much respect for those guys, because they did it the right way. Right? They prepare the right way. They practice hard. Um, there were guys that were going to class so half the time if I knew that I missed class. Yeah, I’m that big. TJ get me for Tonia train or Kef heard about it. And they wouldn’t report it back the coast cheese. It was coming straight to me. And she said, Hey, listen, go check them out. If y’all don’t check them. I’m gonna check y’all. Being one of the younger guys that really looked up to him. I wanted to model my game after Tony and calf and even though Kevin and I were in competition for playing time, it was never an issue. No, I was over those guys apartments every single Thursday to go over together. And they were helping me as much as anything teaching me how to play the game because only like two jobs I started playing the game late I never I never played organized football to the ninth grade. So getting to Alabama was That was my fifth year of playing organized football. So I didn’t know much until Tony train and I really sat down and and took all that stuff and learned it and again I never wanted to disappoint those guys when they made a particular check because Tony wasn’t gonna talk to Tony zone you signal you looked at Tony and Tony gave you that look like you don’t know I say Tony I got I’m just gonna press it and get it done
Marvin Constant
you know he’s be fine with Tony when he’ll my calls in the game war. Tony’s be so mad at me when he
Justin Riley
Tony, how much did you have to make up a marvelous mistakes? I mean, he tells a good story about that,
Unknown Speaker
man. I couldn’t make up for more mistakes. Martin made all the damn tackles man. When he made a mistake, he got the tackles. Think about it. Yeah. Well, people don’t understand. When Marvin got hurt. He still wants to lean tack on the team for several weeks. Man.
Unknown Speaker
That was true. That’s true.
Unknown Speaker
So even when he messed up, he was making the right play he made. He was one of those players and they say, well, you mess up. You’re gonna play so fast. Right? He was that guy. Even when he messed up, he made it look good.
Marvin Constant
Because I knew I had a secondary behind me that I could trust.
Steve Brown
I’m sorry, I had to ruin hours. But
Unknown Speaker
let me forget that. By the way, even the year he got hurt. He didn’t let me forget that I did not come back and be the leading tackler.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah.
Steve Brown
I had to leave in a new defensive coordinator of Alabama when we now.
Unknown Speaker
Memory later these four do washed up. Martin was out there running down people, and now barely hobbling and want to be a daggone model.
Marvin Constant
Hey, man, we shot this pilot for TNT for beastmode man I was shooting with a Nika Noni rose man, you want to talk about some fun, man. Whoo.
Unknown Speaker
macadam name drop.
Unknown Speaker
I just
Unknown Speaker
here’s one of my here’s why Travis didn’t really like you. No. No, no. So So Tony, when you beat out the guy in front of you. You were humble. You know, we walked around. You I told y’all gonna do it. Right. At some point, you know, the guys that was in front of me knew that I was coming. Right. And at some point it was gonna happen. But I never went over there today. I’m telling y’all. It is.
Marvin Constant
But but a lot of that because I was angry. Don’t be humble. It’s okay. I was angry to push the button. See they had to push that button. He wouldn’t wait.
Unknown Speaker
He had to push the damn button.
Unknown Speaker
Come on. He came out with a button push the button activated. You
Unknown Speaker
Get her be humble at some point, like you say, You know what? Every time he tells the same story, I’m gonna take the job anyway. I get some points, but hey, you know what? I just got bigger, stronger, faster got to better understand the defense and it was inevitable.
Unknown Speaker
From what from him? No, no.
Unknown Speaker
No, no, he was trash. He was just holding up. I gotta
Unknown Speaker
say all that now, in the fifth grade
Unknown Speaker
MOOC MOOC, if you really want to defer to get better use you said, You know what, Travis, I think you can play the SAM linebacker a little bit better. But you
Unknown Speaker
know what, Joe?
Unknown Speaker
Like, I will make 10 over there it will in our differences, but instead of running the man off,
Marvin Constant
I wish that would have worked out so much that I would I want to demand state, you know, it’s three different linebacker positions. We could, you know, he didn’t have to go one of us just was gonna have to change positions. You know, but he was he decided to go
Steve Brown
What do you mean he like he quit? What happened?
Unknown Speaker
He ran him off the alarm and really, yes, Really? Thank you. Hey,
Marvin Constant
hold on. But But Tony, but Tony, Tony, you was there. TJ you that Jerry you weren’t there yet. My freshman. Yeah. Got me. I was at the execute folks in practice.
Unknown Speaker
You want to
Unknown Speaker
say like, you know, smoke. Oh, used to go in. We both used to go in and now I get
Marvin Constant
to go into every day.
Unknown Speaker
Oh, so somebody did beat you. I got you.
Steve Brown
Oh, wait a minute. Wait. A minute. Wait a minute. Timeout. Timeout. Everybody know, everybody know, except for these white boys. When you get in the fight. And you say it’s a tie that mean yo as long?
Unknown Speaker
That’s a loss.
Unknown Speaker
It was a tie.
Marvin Constant
me okay. He blocked me sometimes I beat him. Sometimes it is what it is. Marvin, you lost. You can’t.
Unknown Speaker
But booty gave him a good matchup now that those nine on seven Whoo.
Unknown Speaker
Boy, whoo.
Unknown Speaker
You heard thundering cry. Like they y’all used to go at it? Oh, yeah. Big McClintock? You know,
Marvin Constant
McClintock just you try to cut me all the time. He never wanted to dive in my ankle.
Steve Brown
So yeah, y’all seen that? back then. y’all heard a lot of thunder and all that stuff. Now. Now y’all here are Excuse me. Pardon me? Can I come by you? Would you like to this?
Justin Riley
Pretty much. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
Hey, do you mind if I tackle you? Yeah, that’s what you
Unknown Speaker
if you go down on that sideline, and you hear some of those collisions with 250 and 300 Lb men, like young people running with the force and hit each other. It’s violent, it’s just they’re not playing in close confined space anymore, like we spread out. So it’s hard to be that impactful every single time when you have 10 yards. And Jalen Waldo was gonna make you MIPS Montero was him and Jamal Lewis coming down here a ob get Marvin news on beat a beat might get to the seekers. MOOC as much as crazy you say you were a linebacker you weren’t playing in space you were box the box gal Hill knocking people space so when you agreed on the track it’s it’s easy to come down and have that Thunder Yes. A little bit of wiggling it in indecision it’s you’re not gonna get that every single time
Unknown Speaker
you make a great point on that man because it when I think back on my college and even preferred
Marvin Constant
hold on hold on Tony. Don’t you still got concussions we used to knock yourself out. I keep going.
Unknown Speaker
No that stuff. Did I get out again? Oh, no. Oh, he back. Back to the huddle is
Unknown Speaker
what I’m looking at Trying to be like, Hey, bro, you go down this time?
Unknown Speaker
We did. I want to come on. There’s no way that I wanted to let anybody know that they ran with my kid under me enough to know the game it was it was really like a macho thing. Tomorrow Louis’s ran me over and I
Unknown Speaker
know
Unknown Speaker
you found a way up. Like,
Unknown Speaker
Jake JJ. JJ Johnson, Travis, Steven Travis Henry. Jamal Lewis. Um, Deuce McAllister.
Unknown Speaker
Um, I’ll yeah. I mean,
Unknown Speaker
all of these to your point, you know, I mean, think about it until you said that the confined space is a reason Wayne Davis on tackling record. Nobody broken the universe album. Yeah. Wayne Davis still hold the title. code for normal tackles. You would never know what
Unknown Speaker
you mean, man. I do. I do. It’s crazy. That is. Wait, wait, wait. Let me join me. I gotta wait.
Steve Brown
Wait, you say everybody had a drink that Wayne? I understand. But I did not correlate the juice. So you saying that? Wayne Davis got it. He got the record for tackles in Alabama. But ba can’t get in the game. He graduated.
Unknown Speaker
Man. Don’t get me in trouble. Man. I have purposely stayed away from this conversation.
Unknown Speaker
The Why are killing. So how many guys have played in front of benefits in the NFL?
Unknown Speaker
Everybody?
Unknown Speaker
Right. I mean, some of us aren’t. Just not it’s not in the cards to be what your daddy was? No.
Unknown Speaker
No, this, this.
Unknown Speaker
Alright, so let me put it to you like this, right? So everybody always talks about buses in the NFL. Like that guy was a bus. That guy was a book. Alright, good. It’s not his fault that he drafted him that high. It’s not been Davis’s fault that he was a five star. Right? He didn’t tell him a five star player. Somebody gave it to him. He gave that title to him. So if you didn’t do it, Hey, why don’t y’all check the recruiting services? Why don’t y’all check the coaches that said that? Check them the kid is what he is.
Steve Brown
Yeah, because I know lots of you, man. I think I think for me, every Friday, every Saturday morning in Tuscaloosa news being Dave’s bending. I’m like, dude, I cannot wait to see you. And then when I when I when I saw him in person, he is the biggest linebacker we got. And I’m like, This dude is gonna tear some people apart first year second year and then I think I’m so disappointed because the media was like man this gonna be Ben Davis coming out here cuz he’s doing so much in practice. He’s doing this he’s on it. And then next thing you know, we’ll Anderson the freshmen is the starting outside linebacker might be what the hell are you doing? Some?
Unknown Speaker
Smoke has always been a person of the two of the brothers. You know, we bro the smoke has always been a person to keep it real. I’m always been a one. But yeah. Just in case, I got some workers counting people on the phone. On the phone, then is a real good dude. I haven’t disappointed I expected to see more out of him. But what I can say is what I do say about him. He didn’t walk away from the game he did for this day in. He and Saban has said some good stuff about him. And I think it has been just a talent gap. But I will say this also, here’s the first person that’s come through that program from Pickens County and myself, Michael Williams, and you can name some other people didn’t get their one stars contributors and make it to the league. So he broke he killed it. We have a streak going. Now we go.
Steve Brown
Well, guess what you wrote about? What you wrote about You just said you smoke. Bravo. Y’all must have different dads because that dude, I don’t care what you’re saying. He better looking at my cousin.
Unknown Speaker
islands Dixon.
Steve Brown
Make sense? at General. See, I can tell that you really enjoy yourself because I see a Deion Sanders jersey. But I see all these boys in the back and then what Have you? What are you doing?
Unknown Speaker
So, really, like every You see, Deon Jones is not framed right? Or framed in my house. Me, right? Everybody has to give me a drink, they get tacked up on the wall. Right? I got it. I got a bunch of them around here. But prime is a guy that I always looked up to. And I thought his game was elite. And every jersey up has a meaning behind it. I just don’t put jerseys up. Just put it up. Um, that’s the Orange Bowl one independence bowl one, the one that I picked off Eli a couple of times a week. So they’re up for reason. That’s just what it is. That’s what’s up. That’s what’s up.
Marvin Constant
Politically Correct answer, man.
Unknown Speaker
We can
Unknown Speaker
always make it about yourself, man.
Unknown Speaker
We can. Hey,
Marvin Constant
this is the jersey I wore when I met Barack Obama. I wore this jersey.
Unknown Speaker
Humble that Tony Dixon is right. So we met up last was it last year to come at? Me, Marvin. So my one of my wife’s best friend’s husband is a huge Dallas Cowboy fan. And Tony just happened to walk up and we’re sitting there talking. And, and I said, Yeah, that’s Tony Dixon. Anything. You can see, you know, when people thinking, like, hold on, I can’t be here. And Tony’s just sitting there having a conversation talking about what he’s doing now with everything. And I’m like, dude, just stop, man. And tell him that you Tony Dixon, the start and safety for the Cowboys at Roy Williams signing man autograph. Sitting there, like, yeah, you know, I’m just, I’m just, you know, trying to do this. And I’m in this world. And I’m like, Tony, I don’t know you the second round draft pick? Do
Steve Brown
I like I like that. But nothing like?
Unknown Speaker
Hold on.
Marvin Constant
Hold on. Tony, Tony, and TJ can attest to this. If somebody called me and asked me for somebody’s number, I don’t have it. TJ and Tony, who they gonna call next, ask for the number.
Unknown Speaker
You know, what’s the, and the reason why that I have a lot of guys numbers, is when I when I went down to Bama. I mean, I’m 14 away 14 hours away from home. Those guys really, like I said, put their arms around and gave me something that I needed at that time. Right? I just lost my sister months before that. And I was in a tough place where I was just angry. Like a chip on his shoulder. Steve out of Boulder on my shoulder, like weighing me down. And if you came and said something to me, yeah, we don’t have a problem. And those guys just really helped me in that point in a point in my life in terms of this maturity, and understanding that it’s bigger than just you. It’s really us. And if you allow us to help you, we will through this tough point.
Unknown Speaker
And but you know, if I had to do a little analysis, I would say that
Steve Brown
Tony Brown is probably the second comedy.
Unknown Speaker
Tony Brown.
Unknown Speaker
Tony Brown. He plays for green.
Justin Riley
Brown, he stopped he was in Green Bay.
Steve Brown
You even meet with Tony Brown.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, Tony and I you know what? So here’s a crazy story with Tony. Like, you know, Tony, Tony is different, right? Yep. Yeah. And down to bammo when I was working for the bills, and I did a pro day and I you know, testing all the guys checking out all the prospect down here. So myself and I was like Marcel Darius without you. So we hanging out. And one of the coaches grabbed me and said, Hey, you know what? That young man over there? And I said, you know, yeah, I knew who he was, but I never really, really got into him, because I’m not wanting to go around and just start talking to everybody say, Hey, you know, I used to play here, you guys aren’t doing ABC together. And this is the time that he got in a little bit of trouble. And I believe he was kicked off the team for a lot bit, right, just for being for being different. So one of the people that knew me knew that, you know, our past wasn’t the same, but we we had issues of, you know, just fitting in and dealing with people on a regular basis. And I got to the point that we used to text a lot and sit down and mentor this on doing On the right things, and over a couple of years, we’ve lost contact with each other. But those are some of the things that I did behind the scenes that I never really wanted out. Yeah, I did. But for guys like that, you got to put your arms around. Yeah. And that’s why I got into coaching. That’s part of evaluating players and being in a building, because a lot of us are misunderstood. And not a lot of us just want to open up to people and say, this is the problem with me. But if you understand people in general, and you can see people going, someone going through a tough situation, it’s our job to put our arms around them, and help them, cultivate them, develop them into mature adults, because look, it’s I mean, Tony’s had what, three or four year career in NFL.
Steve Brown
You see, you say, you said, you see some guys going through some stuff, put your arms around when you’re doing it. I tried to several times, and that that didn’t work out well at all.
Unknown Speaker
But it’s so true. If you want with a person and talk with a person long enough, and then they and they get comfortable enough with because we didn’t know look, we talked about smoked leaf or shodo for a recruiting trip. And I was in I was assigned to it came around and I walked up and somebody was like, What in the hell am I gonna do with him this weekend? We are totally different. I’m like, I can’t relate to this cat, man. You know, but in growing up in the south, you know, it’s a different mentality with Ruby. I mean, we trust we trust ERP quicker than someone like smoke would trust us, right? So he taught me a whole lot, especially that difference, and that’s why we’re cool today. But that to the point he just made about Tony, he’s just passed. No, he just passed it down. He’s just paying for man. And in essence, Steve, you know, you’ve done that. Well, you know what I’m not I know you didn’t go to Alabama but you know, you know, sir. I’m Senior with Stillman. You know, when I know this is a separate show. But even when me TJ was doing the count and you Marvin helping us with the football camp
Unknown Speaker
back home.
Unknown Speaker
I mean,
Unknown Speaker
it’s not a surprise. It’s coming full circle. Because I was
Unknown Speaker
getting Steve.
Justin Riley
Y’all hadn’t seen that character on Instagram.
Unknown Speaker
Hey, man. Hey, man, why are you? Oh my god.
Unknown Speaker
You remember you when you first came out when you add here?
Unknown Speaker
I remember that.
Marvin Constant
We used to come up from behind the couch. man. Hey,
Justin Riley
I try to get him to do that step show that he did well, back but he won’t do it.
Steve Brown
You know why? Because my my marvins right now,
Justin Riley
bro. It’s Founders Day. Come on.
Unknown Speaker
No, my knees, my knees like marvins right now.
Unknown Speaker
But what if that’s the case, you
Unknown Speaker
know what will be going on right now. And in the world. I wish that some of y’all comedians would come up with like a nightmarish like a weekend show or something like that. Just kind of the tension of the world and just bring some more laughs to us. You know what I mean? Because Well,
Steve Brown
you know what, we’ve tried that man but because of the you know, the of course the kimono protocol. Crowds been around, of course, I’ve been doing a lot of virtual shows. But, you know, but other than that nobody’s really going out right now. Because because they’re not letting crowds assemble and all that it’s a sad thing. So everybody’s hand attack. No, but I appreciate the sentiment man. And when things when the world opened back up, you know, you’ll see me right back out there.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, Miss comicview Oh, yeah.
Unknown Speaker
Good stuff.
Unknown Speaker
I don’t even see like the young talent of like comedians coming through anymore, you know,
Steve Brown
right. Right. Because, you know, I mean, all of the old great talents, they they’re, they’re not wish they’re doing our thing. Right now. It’s all about the social media, you know, I’m saying and now let’s I’ll give you a perfect example. Let’s say it’s so bad. Now. You can make a funny video on Instagram and put Your title as a comedian, people will book you, right? You don’t. And you don’t. And you haven’t told him that one joke or written a joke. And that’s just what it is is all about. Coaches is you’re not qualified for the position. But if you’re making a little noise or people are talking about you, then you can possibly be booked to these comedy clubs. Now, the bad part is somebody who’s never gone to a comedy show come to see you and your garbage. And that’s the first comedy show. They see them like, I’m never going back. So that’s just what it is. A lot of comedy clubs are closing down because of that.
Marvin Constant
Hey, Steve, I gotta tell you some Steeda Oh, here we go. The funniest thing I’ve ever seen was you performing at j when you did that joke when you had a cigarette coming up, act like he’s coming up from behind that couch.
Unknown Speaker
Oh my god. Oh, man. Oh, yeah.
Marvin Constant
I know. That was about 20 years ago, but man had flooded phonies.
Unknown Speaker
Anytime you think it was TCM bro. Oh.
Unknown Speaker
Hey, Justin.
Unknown Speaker
Yes.
Unknown Speaker
Listen,
Steve Brown
let’s get to the predictions. I don’t want to talk to these guys.
Justin Riley
I’m about to turn through that. One thing speaking of older comedians, I don’t know if y’all knew this. Sinbad is not doing too well right now. Right? They just had a stroke. Not yet. His family’s just asked that. Everybody must be respectful of their privacy, but to keep him in your prayers. And Sinbad has been a guy that I’ve respected and loved for years. So yeah, I wanted to throw that out.
Unknown Speaker
Steve that’s something I remember. When y’all You see, like traveled together? We had what’s my man out of DC? Oh, my skin cat big is it red? Rio Grande. And then the other cat that was on on how to be a playing lightning cat.
Steve Brown
A d re i think i think it’s D re all of them do was living in an apartment across
Unknown Speaker
from us. Yeah. Back in the day. You guys traveled together?
Steve Brown
Yeah, we had we had we used to have to share rooms together and all that man. So it was it was a struggle back in the day, man.
Unknown Speaker
Man, but go ahead and go hold you up.
Unknown Speaker
Man appreciate it. Man.
Unknown Speaker
Okay.
Justin Riley
Question for Gerald. Real quick. I we asked this every week at the Shows of All our guests. was like for each of you. Hearing your name call for the first time over Bryant Denny stadium speakers.
Steve Brown
Mine was mine was awful because I was stealing and it caught my eyes and
if you if you’re driving a 1982 Ford something somebody’s breaking in your car. And it was my
Justin Riley
wife the next day? No, no.
Steve Brown
It was me. Me and Antonio. What’s his name around? No.
Unknown Speaker
No teammate the running better.
Unknown Speaker
The runner that Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
radios. Oh,
Unknown Speaker
God, Tony. That was that. Did
Unknown Speaker
he come in with y’all? Yes. Yes, ed.
Unknown Speaker
I’ve never heard anything but talent come out there bro. Beast beast.
Steve Brown
He got caught stealing radios on campus
Unknown Speaker
is the best thing for that young fella. He should have went to to just go somewhere away from Tuscaloosa.
Steve Brown
No, nope, nope, nope, nope. What he shouldn’t be was got here but Kenwood instead of a JV.
Unknown Speaker
Right. Hey, dude, a small he was breaking shopping practice, bro. I heard a breaking shop. Yeah, one of the best talents has never never had a chance that we never saw.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. There was a question for me. Let
Unknown Speaker
me shoot it to you right now.
Santiago Leon
Oh, Gerald. Question. Yes. Tell me what was your wish was better the CFL or the xfl? level play?
Unknown Speaker
Um,
Unknown Speaker
oh x. So by far, why? of the level of talent, right? So when you talk about the CFL yet also remember there’s a ratio. So you have to have Canadians on the field each time, right. And when you’re talking about the NFL, the talent level is so high because on an NFL team, you’re only going to have 63 man rosters, right? So the 64th best player. He’s an ex NFL, right? So that talent level is much higher than the CFL on a position of position was injured.
Santiago Leon
And do you think like the reemergence of the xfl will do better this time than the first time around?
Unknown Speaker
I believe so. Because when you look at it, you got the right, like recipe for success. And if it wasn’t for the pandemic, everything was going at a good level right. So going around You’re the second was the third time through, you’d want to say that I’m owners and whoever they’re going to hire to run the football side can put together a proper plan to get football back in the spring, because this is a plate, it’s missing, right? Everyone loves football. And there’s enough football players out there to form a proper league. And with enough talent evaluators and coaches, to get the young people playing in the right way, in an efficient way, getting them back to wherever they want to get to event, that’s the NFL, on whatever, can you see a lot of the product that we had in the xfl making it to the NFL?
Marvin Constant
I got a I got a quick question for you, Jared, when you when you speak about the talent level, given what happened with the pandemic this year, and a lot of teams, they get to bring in a lot of guys that they normally would have brought in due to the pandemic. So now you have a surplus of talent that’s going to be sitting out there that has not been evaluated yet. And then you look at the issue of the NCAA a saying that guys can come back and play another year. So it’s like you’re creating a void on both ends, like you’re gonna get guys who probably gonna stay in college that extra year that normally will be coming out, but you still have the surplus of guys who came out last year and just didn’t get a shot. So where does the xfl fall in the middle of all that?
Unknown Speaker
Well, let me give you let me give you an example. Cuz I think examples probably tell the truth the most right, because I can give you my opinion, I could be detail wrong. So here’s a young man named Kenny Robinson. That was at the University of Virginia he had transferred from I forget whatever school that he transferred from, what he was also in that protocol that we talked about, Steve. I was put on a case by Doug Whaley and on Oliver luck, the commissioner at that time, he said, You know what, you know, smoke, we need you. We need that young man and Expo, you need to go sit down and talk to him, him and his and his family. They were there at the workout and at the same game place out in Virginia. So I put on my recruiting hat. I said, Okay, good. If my boss said, I gotta go get this, I gotta go get it. So we sat down, and we talked, and I said, Okay, you can transfer and go back to school, right? And get drafted in whatever round, it’s, you’re gonna get drafted, right. But if you’re playing against grown men in the professional league, you’re helping yourself out. The hardest thing to do when in your rookie year, and Tony can attest with this, and even TJ is leaving the structure of college. Right, you’re now on your own. You don’t have the training table there for three meals. What you need to do, so if you’re a young person, and you have the opportunity to go play, and still get draft because he still got drafted in the fifth round by the Carolina Panthers, and he’s active now on their roster, can you Robertson, go do that. Like who wants to stick around and play college ball? Why the money and get closer to your dreams of playing professional ball is still getting evaluated. And being professional. So exactly my case if you’re young guy, and you’ve had enough with school, and you said you know, I want to go play and you can’t get to the NFL right there because you have the eligibility in the NCAA, which is one of the biggest mockeries in the world in terms of holding young people back. You go play pro football, you get it done.
Justin Riley
Thank you. Let’s go back to that question guys. asked earlier what it felt like to each of you when you first heard your name being called over Brian Dean stage and speakers and we’ll start with Gerald
Unknown Speaker
Okay. Oh man, so the young guy got to go first. All right. For me, I have to if I can’t remember the first time that I heard my name and quote because I didn’t really care right I was out there playing like a lot of like that whole 1999 season my freshman year I don’t know if Marvin or T we just played ball and like none of us like remember like oh yeah, we just beat Florida twice and we ran off seven eight games in a row we didn’t lose it. We just lost to the national champions the year before with Tom Brady and really just a young group so to hear my name being cool I never really paid attention to it I was out there this ball and make sure that in that Tony down and Tony give me that look. Kiss me later on and put me in a stranglehold or
Justin Riley
I believe that I believe it. What What about you Tony?
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I’m like smoke I can’t remember the first time the name is called I do remember the first game my phone. The first game was even plan but just walking out of town for the first time this movie still playing Legion field Birmingham. It was against University of Houston. I just remember walking out man and just even though I’ve been through training camp practices and you name it when I walked out and I just walked out atone I know I stopped for a moment just look around. I was like, I can’t believe Hear, you know, it was just one of those those moments but to the smallest point is like, it’s amazing the ability that you have to just be in the moment and not hear anything from the crowd or anything around you hear your teammates, right? Or you hear whatever is going on. But the first time I’m walking on that tone level, it was very surreal man, it was a it was a dream come true. And, and at that point, I was like, hey, I want to I want that. Yes shall my name ball.
Justin Riley
No doubt, no doubt about you, TJ
Unknown Speaker
E nicely.
Unknown Speaker
I think I think TJ TJ driving back home.
Unknown Speaker
He’s like down, man. He might be checked or your mute go.
Unknown Speaker
He’s done.
Justin Riley
All right. Well, if we get him back, we’ll ask him but let’s move on to predictions. Great time this show. I think we’re still playing this weekend. Right COVID hadn’t stopped at this time. We’ll see a good matchup of the weekend. Number nine, Indiana versus number three, Ohio State. We’ll start with you Gerald and then we’ll go to Tony Marvin. And whenever Steve’s how’s good back.
Unknown Speaker
Oh, book is big man. I don’t think that’s gonna be close
Unknown Speaker
your book as well. I
Marvin Constant
hope it ain’t too bad so I took the points on Indiana side
Unknown Speaker
look
Unknown Speaker
already put that tickity
Unknown Speaker
you in Kirby smarts only ones that don’t really believe in custom fields.
Marvin Constant
I just think that that line was extremely high. So you know, I noted they’re not gonna win. I just don’t need him to go out there and get key or key or put up a little bit of fun. That’s all I need him to do.
Justin Riley
Good. Hi, Steve. How you got Indiana versus Ohio State?
Unknown Speaker
Um,
Steve Brown
honestly I’m not sleeping on Indiana. Indiana has been looking really good man. And I think they’re gonna give Ohio State of fight it’s a toss up but it’s gonna close one closer than what people think is gonna be Ohio State is gonna be close though.
Unknown Speaker
Like that like that.
Unknown Speaker
I hope it’s close.
Steve Brown
Or don’t don’t be don’t be surprised if it’s upset now. Don’t be surprised cuz cuz cuz but yours but yours, Ohio. Indiana has played Ohio State pretty close. Yeah, and then they’ll make a couple of mistakes and then again get blown away but you know,
Unknown Speaker
right.
Unknown Speaker
Ohio State Bama and Clemson
Unknown Speaker
he named three
Unknown Speaker
Well, when you look at it, you don’t say Cincinnati’s probably gonna go undefeated and everybody wants to. That’s Cinderella story, so they’re gonna go in there and get
Unknown Speaker
a good beat the damn deal.
Justin Riley
actually brings me to our next game since now he’s gonna be playing UCF. This could be a track game. What do y’all feel like? Gerald you first
Unknown Speaker
a trend games.
Unknown Speaker
Cincinnati is on a whole nother level. I’m taking Cincinnati. Dhoni Yeah,
Unknown Speaker
I can walk away from Cincinnati.
Marvin Constant
Cincinnati on my ticket. So
Unknown Speaker
Steve?
Unknown Speaker
Oh, I’m taking Cincinnati.
Justin Riley
Okay, okay. I Clemson versus Florida State.
Unknown Speaker
Gerald. Yeah, unless they get Bobby or Jimbo back in that role as a coach. Yeah, Coach Sweeney go mark those guys up.
Justin Riley
This week too. So
Unknown Speaker
Oh, man. Oh, yo, not
Steve Brown
solid credit which is a great quarterback but that freshmen Yeah. Now
Unknown Speaker
he did a really good Steve He’s different.
Unknown Speaker
We look we’re looking at maybe a Cam Newton is yeah layer right with a better with it with a different mindset right. Not a weak concept. Yep, really do throw the ball better. Now. He’s a freshman watching him but he’s different. Yeah, but
Steve Brown
that now hold on a minute. He is Cam Newton ish.
He just don’t dress like him. Nobody dresses like a prince dude.
Unknown Speaker
I respect him too much. You’re in Crusher, man. He’s the best player in sec history. Keep going. I
Unknown Speaker
know what dresser,
Justin Riley
dresser and sec
Unknown Speaker
you got the man got his own you you aren’t doing that.
Marvin Constant
Can the best dressed nanny Got it? No
Unknown Speaker
stove
Unknown Speaker
Don’t get me wrong, but that dress code is
Unknown Speaker
beyond awesome. Steve I’m gonna get you the best brass player in the NFL right now. Boom tyrod Taylor
Unknown Speaker
Okay, okay.
Unknown Speaker
Listen whoever wants to step into a boom you’re out the water sharp I think I’m gonna stop dressing myself but Todd got it. Yeah, see
Marvin Constant
you got your Mr. Rogers sweat on over
Unknown Speaker
40 years old man. I’m a grown up
Unknown Speaker
man I got on Polo. Polo. Yeah. Marvin,
Unknown Speaker
Marvin, let me ask you a question. You got on Polo and you just you sitting there selling pool how much money Polo Give me the winner.
Marvin Constant
And give me that away man. It was a gift. I just put it on for the show so I can look halfway decent for you brother.
Unknown Speaker
They stock just went through the roof. Could you give them a little easy shout out keep going
Unknown Speaker
man that looks
Unknown Speaker
so setup.
Justin Riley
Interesting game this weekend robbery game, Oklahoma State and number 14 vs. Oklahoma. Gerald.
Unknown Speaker
Whoo. Okay, Coach Gundy versus Lincoln. No matter watching that game. I’m gonna go with Oklahoma State.
Unknown Speaker
Tony Sooners. Steve,
Steve Brown
I’m going with the coach with the money in 2020.
Unknown Speaker
Marvin?
Marvin Constant
Yeah, I’m gonna go Oklahoma State now and if you see at St my backgrounds, all my pics that I actually wasted on Vegas. So these are all my picks that are wage it this week. So yay, God, please.
Justin Riley
All right, Matt back one of those pigs is up next number 10. Wisconsin versus number 19. Northwestern. Gerald.
Unknown Speaker
And what I love coach Fitzgerald. But I’m gonna go ahead and roll Wisconsin.
Unknown Speaker
Tony, Wisconsin, man.
Unknown Speaker
See?
Steve Brown
When you when you say miscast when you say number two Wisconsin
Justin Riley
number 10. Wisconsin versus Oh,
Steve Brown
I’d like to say when when I’m going to Wisconsin.
Marvin Constant
All right. Well, you already see what’s on my screen. You see Wisconsin already so yeah, you know I I’m trying to get some money I need to make I need to win back somebody might not in last all season. I’ve been getting killed each year.
Steve Brown
just just just a week. Just we need to tell because why the hell Marvin got a green screen and we don’t
Justin Riley
wait a minute, Marvin. Mom’s got more of the budget and we do our thing.
Unknown Speaker
We don’t let the fool you. fool you.
Unknown Speaker
You got it Lauer’s. Now I’m telling you somebody’s getting built
Justin Riley
we’re gonna have to put our cash app account on here on the screen
Unknown Speaker
the sun All right.
Unknown Speaker
I’m telling you
Marvin Constant
we wrap it up coach we wrapping it up.
Justin Riley
We got we got it. All right. Here’s an interesting game. LSU vs. Arkansas.
Unknown Speaker
That’s the game nobody’s watching.
Unknown Speaker
Right.
Unknown Speaker
Um, go ahead. Roll with Arkansas. I like it. Yeah. Whatever they got going on down there. LSU. I hope they figured out maybe never. Hey,
Steve Brown
do you know what you got? You got a point with Arkansas, Arkansas? I think I think Believe it or not, they were talking about giving their coach the coach of the year in the sec. He’s turning around. I’m taking Arkansas.
Unknown Speaker
Sam Pittman, one of the better coaches in America. Whenever you have time, go back and just research where he’s been his players in the NFL. And when he leaves a school what they look like and when he gets to another one with these great teacher offers an online guru.
Marvin Constant
I’m gonna pick Arkansas because they might pull what they pulled in 98 Tj and Tony know what I’m talking about. When half the team got food poisoning Arkansas caught that 41 t in a
Justin Riley
row down man trying to forget the alright for us the game of the weekend number one Alabama vs. Kentucky. Gerald, would you get a course when I was gonna win but what are you looking for in this game?
Unknown Speaker
Ah.
Unknown Speaker
I’m looking for that difference of line really. Taking Back over the line of scrimmage and those guys up front really commanding line of scrimmage on both ends. Right? out against Kentucky. Good luck.
Unknown Speaker
Drew, Tony. Yeah, I
Unknown Speaker
mean, I’m like I’m like you’re like at this point you just run to see that getting better every week. You know that you’ve been in that film room you actually you know getting better at total your, your takes I’m really looking at defense man. It’s been it’s been some mishaps on a defense where you didn’t know like, What are you looking at? Or hoping they can they can clean some of that up if leak is concerned is really not a bad team. Yeah. Overall, they don’t have the talent to sustain. So it shouldn’t be an easy win, but we just need to work on some more fundamentals get ready for the big boys.
Unknown Speaker
Marvin, what do you think
Marvin Constant
we definitely got to work on fundamentals. You know, I’m starting to think that some of these guys do what I used to do. On Thursday nights used to have film study over at Dulles at the center where we used to leave I used to go for the wings
so yeah, but you got to be making improvements at this point because you got to look at it SEC championship game is only a few weeks out and looks like we’re on a collision course to play Florida. Dan Mullen has that team improving on a week to week basis so you know, you know you’re going to get a dynamic offense from a quarterback who’s improving weekend and week out and they’re starting to talk this Heisman talk with him so that defense has to make some extra some tremendous strides before December the 19th we’re gonna be in trouble
Steve Brown
All right, you know what with me I’m gonna say of course I’m gonna win but when I’m looking at a I’m what I’m excited to see is how the defense react they had two weeks off to fix all of the missing pieces, and missed assignments and all that it but if they if they come back, and they’re not making tackles and they’re still blowing coverages and all that somebody needs to fire that just simple as that. So that’s I’m very that’s that’s, I’m not looking I’m just looking at the defense Vicki the defense on the field, the whole goddamn game. I
Justin Riley
want to see them real quick as defensive backs. What do y’all think about Malik amore
Steve Brown
when he when he can more or
Justin Riley
less like a cross train George Teague and Megan Fitzpatrick.
Unknown Speaker
He’s a friend. He’s
Unknown Speaker
a freshman too. Right.
Justin Riley
Looks good. He looks good. So Jael, what do you think about Malcolm or
Unknown Speaker
unlike Malika? I think when you study Nick Saban’s defense, you’re certain positions that you want to be your better players right and the safeties in that money player that he that he is or that I think his star I’m sorry, the star player. Yeah, Star gonna be an impactful player and as a true freshman, you see him getting better weekly, right? I don’t know how highly he was recruited. But when you have lived ball skills, anticipation, independent ability to finish plays, I really like them. I think I think Bama got a good nickel.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. Justin, can
Steve Brown
I ask a question Justin real quick? Yeah. Okay, before we go, I read a really important question. The Pentagon great NC double a college football back shit. Really?
Unknown Speaker
I’ve never owned a video game system. I can’t even comment on it.
Steve Brown
I still got my Atari. I’m waiting to come back.
Unknown Speaker
Later players on they’re just doing and bringing it back. But
Marvin Constant
yeah, I think that O’Bannon lost any hopes of that game coming back. So
Justin Riley
yeah. Before we close, Marvin, give us an update on your book how we can get it all the good things are going on with it right
Marvin Constant
