The Boston Red Sox were eliminated from the wild-card race after the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners on Friday.
Boston’s very remote chances of making the playoffs were still alive because it owned a tiebreaker over the Rangers.
The club has now missed the postseason four times over the last five years.
